Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion, has been a major part of the sport since her teenage years. She has made and broken several records. Further, Williams has inspired many youngsters to pursue their dreams with the level of dedication she did. However, after ruling the sport for over 25 years, she now is ready to say goodbye, and Emma Raducanu, a player who grew up watching her reign, had a few things to say.

The British tennis professional who is fueling up to touch the peak of her career shared her thoughts on the legend and how she has impacted her.

The 19-year-old rising star, in an interview, addressed the former World no.1s retirement. She said, its incredible her career. She has achieved so much. And to see her around in this U.S. swing is really inspiring.

Thereafter, she added, Like she keeps playing because she obviously loves the game. I think that longevity of a career is something we aspire to achieve as well.

Raducanu has never had an opportunity to test her skills against the seven-time Wimbledon champion, but still believes, she definitely changed the game. To dominate that much, well, theres not really been someone who has dominated like her in the womens game. So I think she did change the game a lot in that respect.

Raducanu and Williams both enrolled for the ongoing Canadian Masters. While the former walked out of the tournament after incurring an opening round defeat, the three-time champion is still fighting in the tournament and met the Brit during a warm-up session. Though the conversation got limited to greetings because of the rain.

Further, the six-time US Open champion is set to hang her racket post this seasons American hard-court Grand Slam. Following Toronto, she will compete in Cincinnati and then finally in the US majors.

The 2021 US Open champion has been through a lot this year. At first, during the Australian Open, she struggled with a painful blister. Following that, she had to walk out of the Indian Wells because of a loss caused by her stiff back.

Then the Brit was unable to overcome her lower back injury and was forced out of the Italian Open. Further, in the very first match of the grass swing, she incurred a side strain injury which affected her performance in her home Grand Slam event, the Wimbledon Championships.

After retiring this offseason, the NFL world was shaken. However, just 40 days into that retirement, Brady decided enough was enough and came back.

Meanwhile, Stephen Curry is coming off the highs of his fourth NBA title. He aced past the Boston Celtics in six games, and he was rewarded with his first Finals MVP.

Now, theres genuine debate over whether Steph Curry is the greatest point guard of all time, and if hes entered the list of the top 10 NBA players of all time.

When it comes to longevity in sports, theres no other person to look at besides Tom Brady. At 45 years old, hes putting up career numbers, passing for the most yards in his career and second most touchdowns of his career.

Its incredible how far hes stretched his body to remain a top player in the league for so long. Kendrick Perkins believes that Steph has the ability to replicate Bradys success. Kendrick Perkins used to be a center in the NBA, and now hes an analyst for the league with a $40 million net worth.

When I look at Steph Curry, I think of Steph Curry, as far as longevity-wise, could actually be the Tom Brady of the NBA Because, when you look at Steph Curry, his game is not reliant on athleticism, Perkins explained

Hes not a guy that has to dunk the ball. Hes not a guy that has to beat you with speed. Hes a guy that beats you with craftiness, his skillset, and, most importantly, his shooting. His shooting is not going anywhere no time soon.

Perkins does make a valid point. Currys shooting ability wont decline based on his age, its not something he has to be in the prime of physical fitness to sustain. Remember Ray Allen on the Heat?

Curry is currently 34 years old, so hes also getting up there in numbers, but since his game isnt predicated on his bodys ability to push to the limit, he can definitely stay in the league for a very long time.

Akintola Williams clocks 103, reveals secrets of longevity – P.M. News

Pa Akintola Williams, the foremost Chartered Accountant in Nigeria, turns 103 today, 9 August 2022. He was born on 9 August 1919. That was after the end of World War 1.

In a past interview, he revealed the secrets of his long life:

The secret of my longevity is moderation. In everything I do, I strive to be moderate, and I mean moderate, a little of this and a little of that not too much. Whether it is what you eat, what you drink, or whatever you do, just be moderate and you will live a refreshing, strong, and fulfilling life.

When you are excessive in your daily life activities, you lose a life and its fantastic quality. But when you keep it moderate, you will not only be in control but enjoy life abundantly.

Also, you have to endeavor to live a simple life, avoid controversies, conflicts, over-ambition, just live a simple life and life will be your friend.

Please always take enough rest. I always observe my siesta, sleep about eight hours every day, and generally have enough rest. Your body is your priceless possession, so, please do not abuse it, for if you do, you will lose it.

And please, do not play with exercise mental, physical, and spiritual. The three go hand in hand. I still do my studies and attend to professional matters referred to me.

For once you stop exercising your brain, you die literally. I keep fit and I do not live a sedentary life.

Pa Akintola Williams who granted this interview to Vanguard in 2011 when he turned 92 was the first Nigerian to qualify as a chartered accountant.

He began his education at Olowogbowo Methodist Primary School, Bankole street, Apongbon, Lagos Island, Lagos, in the early 1930s; the same primary school his late junior brother Chief Rotimi Williams attended. His youngest brother Rev James Kehinde Williams was a pastor in the same church. Olowogbowo Methodist Church.

According to his biographers, his firm was founded in 1952, and later grew organically and through mergers to become the largest professional services firm in Nigeria by 2004. Williams participated in founding the Nigerian Stock Exchange and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria. During their long career, he has received many honours.

According to Tom G. Forrest in the essay, The advance of African capital: the growth of Nigerian private enterprise, published in the book, International African Institute (1994), Akintola Williams grandfather, Z. A. Williams, was a merchant prince from Abeokuta and his father Thomas Ekundayo Williams was a clerk in the colonial service who set up a legal practice in Lagos after training in London, England. Akintola was the older brother of Frederick Rotimi Williams, who later became a distinguished lawyer, and the late Rev. James Kehinde Williams, a Christian minister.

After his elementary studies at Olowogbowo Methodist Primary School, Lagos, Williams then attended the CMS Grammar School, Lagos. He went on to Yaba Higher College on a UAC scholarship, obtaining a diploma in commerce. In 1944, he travelled to England where he studied at the University of London. Studying Banking and Finance, he graduated in 1946 with a Bachelor of Commerce. He continued his studies and qualified as a chartered accountant in England in 1949.

According to Richard L. Sklar (2004), in the book, Nigerian Political Parties: Power in an Emergent African Nation, Williams was one of the founders of the Egbe Omo Oduduwa society while in London, with Dr Oni Akerele as president and Chief Obafemi Awolowo as Secretary.

Williams played a leading role in establishing the Association of Accountants in Nigeria in 1960 with the goal of training accountants. He was the first President of the association. He was a founding member and first president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria. He was also involved in establishing the Nigerian Stock Exchange. He remained actively involved with these organizations into his old age.

Public sector positions held by him include Chairman of the Federal Income Tax Appeal Commissioners (195868), member of the Coker Commission of Inquiry into the Statutory Corporations of the former Western Region of Nigeria (1962), member of the board of Trustees of the Commonwealth Foundation (19661975), Chairman of the Lagos State Government Revenue Collection Panel (1973) and Chairman of the Public Service Review Panel to correct the anomalies in the Udoji Salary Review Commission (1975). Other positions include President of the Metropolitan Club in Victoria Island, Lagos, Founder and Council member of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation and Founder and chairman of the board of Trustees of the Musical Society of Nigeria.

In 1982, Williams was honoured by the Nigerian Government with the O.F. R. Following their retirement in 1983, Tom G. Forrest wrote that Williams threw himself into a project to establish a music centre and concert hall for the Music Society of Nigeria. In April 1997, Williams was appointed a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. for services to the accountancy profession and promotion of arts, culture and music through the Musical Society of Nigeria. The Akintola Williams Arboretum at the Nigerian Conservation Foundation headquarters in Lagos is named in his honour. On 8 May 2011, the Nigeria-Britain Association presented awards to John Kufuor, past President of Ghana, and Akintola Williams, for their contributions to democracy and development in Africa.

4 Best Fruits To Slow the Aging Process Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Want to be healthier and look and feel younger? You can! "As we age, there is increasing harm to our DNA, and, eventually, the damage surpasses the body's ability to repair itself," explains endocrinologist and anti-aging medicine pioneer Florence Comite, MD, founder of the Comite Center for Precision Medicine & Heath and the age-reversing app GroqHealth.

This cellular damage is what makes our skin wrinkly, our hair thinner and grayer, and our bodies prone to those serious disorders and diseases associated with getting older.

Researchers analyzed 30 years' worth of nutrition data from more than 2 million people. The meta-analysis found that people who ate five servings of fruits and vegetables (2 servings of fruit and 3 of vegetables) daily had a 13% lower risk of death from all causes, a 12% lower risk of death from heart disease and stroke, 10% lower mortality from cancer, and 35% lower risk of dying from respiratory illnesses.

Eating more fruit is one of the easiest lifestyle changes you can make to improve your chances for a longer health span. Here's why and the four best types of fruits to eat to support that goal, according to science.

Blueberries are one of the richest sources of anthocyanins, phytochemical compounds that give fruits and vegetables their blue, purple, and, red coloring and are effective antioxidants that fight the free radicals that damage cells.

Some studies have shown that the nutrients in blueberries have the ability to repair damaged DNA and modulate genes associated with longevity. The combination of anthocyanins and dietary fiber in blueberries may also help reduce insulin resistance, lower triglycerides, and reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes, according to research in Current Developments in Nutrition.

What's more, studies suggest that eating blueberries regularly may improve cognitive performance. It may be true what they say about an apple a day. After all, nutrition research has consistently associated eating apples with a host of health benefits. One review in Advances in Nutrition, for example, noted that eating apples regularly may reduce the risk of age-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease.

Grapefruit is rich in a host of healthy nutrients like vitamin C, inflammation-fighting magnesium, blood-pressure-lowering potassium, and dietary fiber. But its greatest health benefit may be its ability to combat the cluster of cardio-metabolic disorders linked to being overweight. As you age, your risk of being overweight increases; therefore, incorporating a fat-fighting fruit such as grapefruit in your diet is a great anti-aging tool.

One study found that participants who ate half of a grapefruit with each meal lost 3.6 pounds over the course of the 12-week experiment. And an analysis of data from the famed National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 2003-2008) found an association between grapefruit consumption and conditions that reduce cardiovascular disease risks, such as lower body weight and body mass index, smaller waist circumference, lower triglycerides and the inflammation marker C-reactive protein, and higher "good" HDL cholesterol.

Pomegranate juice and the fruit's pink seeds are rich in potassium, a mineral associated with a reduced risk of stroke due to its ability to keep blood pressure in a healthy range.

Pomegranates are also a bountiful source of flavonoids and polyphenols with strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies suggest those antioxidants may help reduce the prevalence of age spots and wrinkles. In one rodent study, researchers found that dried pomegranate juice applied to the skin of hairless mice protected them against sun damage. In other research, pomegranate juice appears to extend the lifespan of mice and other tiny animals.

Of course, that doesn't mean it will do the same for a much bigger animal like you. Extending your health span to match your lifespan, as Dr. Comite suggests, requires a holistic approach in which eating specific foods is but one important component of a host of interventions that should be designed specifically for the individual.

When you do burpees, you're signing up for a move that challenges your cardiovascular system and works the muscles of your upper and lower body. Its why the full-body exercise is so beneficialand hard. But just when you're starting to think, "Hey, I'm getting the hang of this!" Trainer of the Month Club Pilates instructors Brian Spencer and Chloe de Winter are here with a twist. Introducing the reverseburpee.

"Reverse burpees are so good for adding a cardio option to strengthen glutes and core for healthy knees and a low back," says Spencer in today's video. Plus, because reverse burpees require you to learn a new (somewhat complex) movement pattern, they're also helping you hone your coordination and motor skillswhich may increase your longevity.

Of course, the odds of you nailing a reverse burpee on the first try are slim (and that's totally okay). The exercise involves a controlled backward roll that gives you enough momentum on the way forward to spring up onto your feet and jump into the air. It's far from easy, but luckily Spencer and de Winter are breaking down some of the most common mistakes they see in class on this week's edition of TOTMC.

The first thing to watch out for, says Spencer, is your knees. If you find that theyre buckling in toward one another to help you lower to the ground, roll backward, and lift back up, you're compromising the health of your ankles. Second, Spencer says people tend to let their legs bob up and down in the air when the core work comes from holding your thighs tightly to your chest. And last, reverse burpees-newbies tend to opt out of using their hands when doing so would help them maintain proper form.

Recently, however, one health-focused TikTok trend has surfaced that does have some solid potential. These videos offer sage advice from experts in various fields sharing what they'd never do given their depth of knowledge they've gained from their years of experience. While most have featured folks with specializations in medicine, it's not uncommon to find useful tips from fire safety experts, chefs, couples therapists, financial advisors, and so on. While every internet trend needs to be considered with a discerning lensyes, even one with expertsthis most recent trend has been a highlight.

One such area of advice I have been hoping to stumble across on my FYP was a cardiologist with their tips for what to do and not do in the name of heart health, but unfortunately, even in my late night scrolling, I have come up short. So, I went ahead and asked a cardiologist to share what rules he follows in his own lifeincluding what he'd never doin order to maintain optimal heart health and boost his longevity.

For Kaustubh Dabhadkar, MD, MPH, MBA, FACC, a North Carolina-based cardiologist with a specialization in preventative care, the top three no-no's in his personal life are smoking, recreational drugs like cocaine, and excessive alcohol. As a cardiologist, his perspective on these things emphasizes their impact on the heart.

"Smoking is directly associated with a number of health conditionsstroke, heart attack, diabetes, lung cancerwithout any significant benefits," says Dr. Dabhadkar. "And drugs like cocaine increase short-term as well as long-term risk of heart attack and sudden cardiac death."

As for alcohol, the word "excessive" is important. For Dr. Dabhadkar, his key concern here is about alcohol's risk of increasing your LDL (the "bad" form of) cholesterol and triglycerides, so he avoids consuming it in excess.

When you think of heart health physicians and what their advice might be, one might be quick to assume that they practice intense fitness regimens, follow a super stringent diet, and stress the importance of taking a cocktail of supplements. However, for Dr. Dabhadkar, you will notice that his own lifestyle practices are neither extreme nor restrictiveinstead, they focus on maintaining strong connections with others, prioritizing mindfulness and movement throughout the day, and practicing a well-balanced lifestyle.

Funnily enough, all of the above are common habits throughout the Blue Zones regions of the world, where people tend to live the longest. Coincidence? I'd think not.

"Even a few minutes of exercise each day reduces the future risk of heart disease," says Dr. Dabhadkar. This is a helpful mindset to consider: It's important to remember that you don't have to set aside hours to exercise or go really hard at the gym to boost your heart health. Physical activity looks different for everyone, and while sometimes it might mean taking a spin class or sweating it out at yoga, you can also stay active by going for a short walk, doing housework, or (indeed) taking the stairs.

"This is the most important meal of the day and keeps me going," says Dr. Dabhadkar. Breakfast is super important for maintaining energy levels throughout the day, and studies have shown that those who skip breakfast tend to miss out on super heart-healthy ingredients like fiber and antioxidants.

"Stress plays a vital role in heart and metabolic diseases," says Dr. Dabhadkar. "Meditation helps with stress management, so doing this every day can be beneficial for managing stress levels."

"Tennis helps me socialize while getting enough exercise," says Dr. Dabhadkar. Believe it or not, socializing is another very important for your heart health. For example, numerous studies have shownthat social isolation and literal loneliness can increase one's risk for heart disease.

Speaking of the importance of maintaining close relationships. "Spending quality time with my family helps me with stress management, and it's also a wonderful way to remind oneself of what's truly important in life," says Dr. Dabhadkar. Indeed, to drive his previous point home further, it's very significant that two out of the top five tips from this cardiologist are about spending time with other people.
