West Brom may have only drawn their opening game of the new Championship season but they could be best placed to win promotion.

According to The Times, Steve Bruce is now involved in his 44th consecutive season as a player and a manager in professional football which is a statistic no one in history can match.

He has come a long way since his debut for Gillingham in the 1979-80 season and now he can be the one to lead the Baggies to promotion as he has done with Aston Villa and Birmingham City in the region.

His first half a season with West Brom hardly saw him pull up any trees but he did steady the ship at The Hawthorns somewhat and now he has had a transfer window to make his own additions, this Albion side will be one that other sides need to fear.

Starting with Watford on Monday night (8 August) who have just come down from the Premier League and beat Sheffield United on the opening weekend of the new campaign.

The Championship can be the most difficult league to gain any kind of momentum as any side can beat anyone on their day, something West Brom are more than familiar with after last seasons troubles.

But consistency comes from experience and no club can boast a more experienced boss than Albion and it could be Bruces decision-making that decides the clubs fate.

If he can consistently get it right, then West Brom will be tough to stop now they have addressed their creativity issues with John Swift and Jed Wallace.

In other West Brom news, Kean Bryans return to fitness has been nudged even further back to limit Bruces options for the visit of the Hornets.

Proffee (Protein & Coffee): The New Health Trend Brewing on TikTok – Healthline

Theres a new trend brewing on TikTok. Its called proffee and the hashtag #proffee has already received nearly 10 million views on the social media platform.

In the TikTok world, where proffee has taken off, this usually means a protein shake poured over a cold brew or iced coffee, but in actuality, it can be any type of coffee with protein added, says Carolyn Cohen, an integrative nutritionist, functional medicine health coach, and host of the podcast Wellness While Walking.

The dramatic slow-motion videos, which end with a creamy beverage in a glass jar, make it look fun and delicious. And some TikTok users are swearing by its benefits, including weight loss. But do the health claims really shake out?

Experts spilled on what you need to know before trying this made-for-social-media beverage.

But experts offer mixed reviews on these claims.

Noah Quezada, RDN, says that proffee can be energizing and improve focus and performance because of the caffeine content.

A small 2017 study of seven males who underwent a cycling-based exercise test suggested that caffeine increased time to exhaustion by 12 percent. Another study from 2016 of 12 males indicated that moderate caffeine consumption before and during a round of golf improved subjective energy levels and performance while lowering fatigue.

That said, its important to note that these studies were not done on proffee itself.

Dan Gallagher, a registered dietitian with Aegle Nutrition, says there are better ways to get a jolt.

Healthier sources of caffeine would be black or green tea or simply a cup of coffee, Gallagher says.

A 2019 study suggested that protein intake could boost metabolic health and longevity.

Patricia Kolesa, MS, RDN of Hackensack Meridian Health notes that the recommended dietary intake is 0.8g/kg of body weight per day. In other words, a 150-pound person would need about 120 grams of protein per day. For context, one piece of chicken weighing 174 grams (6.13 oz.) contains about 55 grams of protein.

Kolesa says the protein in shakes can contribute to this protein intake but notes that most people can get enough protein from food. And Gallagher says food is a better protein source.

Protein is healthiest when its sourced from whole ingredients like seafood, lean beef, beans, eggs, or milk, Gallagher says. Maintaining a balanced diet will give all the advertised benefits and more.

Part of the issue is that protein shakes can have added sugars or low quality, processed proteins that dont measure up to the natural proteins found in foods.

Any health benefits of adding protein to coffee can be quickly undone by the window-dressing the devil is in the details when it comes to proffee, Cohen says.

Weight loss is one of the most commonly discussed benefits of proffee. Quezada encourages people to proceed with caution.

Proffee is not a miracle weight-loss drink, Quezada says.

That said, Quezada notes that some evidence suggests that caffeine and protein can aid some people in weight management.

For example, a 2019 meta-analysis of 12 studies indicated that drinking coffee reduced body fat, especially in male participants. A 2020 study suggested it could lower body fat in women.

Another 2020 study indicated that adhering to a high protein diet could be an effective way to lose weight and prevent obesity.

But Kolesa stresses that there are no studies on proffee itself.

It is not a guarantee that the protein coffee itself will help someone lose weight, she says.

And she adds pouring in high fat milk, creamers and sugary syrups can negate any benefits from the beverages protein and caffeine.

Ultimately, Quezada stresses that meeting weekly exercise requirements and following a nutritious diet of lean animal and plant-based protein, produce, and complex carbohydrates are more proven ways for individuals to get the benefits of proffee.

Kolesa says going this route can help people avoid some cons of drinking proffee, including:

The exact number of cups of coffee a person can handle isnt an exact science it will vary based on the individual. If you notice you are jittery or having trouble sleeping, consider reducing the amount.

But Kolesa says the FDA reports that most healthy adults can consume 400 mg. of caffeine daily or four to five cups of coffee. However, she says pregnant and lactating people should consume less.

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology suggests individuals limit caffeine intake to 200 mg., or one 12-oz. cup of coffee, per day during pregnancy.

The CDC notes that a small amount of caffeine passes through breastmilk but says adverse effects, such as poor sleep and irritability, are not typically seen if the lactating person consumes 300 mg. of caffeine, or two to three cups of coffee, daily.

The syrups and high fat milk and creamers some TikTokers are putting in their beverages may not be best for people with diabetes, high cholesterol, or heart conditions.

You could try using low sugar syrups or protein shakes/powders, Kolesa suggests. You can also try low fat creamers and milk.

An older 2013 study suggested that consuming caffeine six hours before bedtime could disrupt sleep.

Kolesa also suggests reading the labels of protein shakes to ensure you are not allergic to any ingredients. Other ingredients may not trigger allergic reactions but could lead to GI issues, like stomach aches. If you notice youre having those issues, stop using the shake.

Gallagher says proffee isnt off the table, but it shouldnt be considered a meal replacement or your primary source of protein or caffeine.

If youre looking for something tasty, this is probably worth drinking, but I would look at it essentially as a blended drink from Starbucks, Gallagher says. Its probably not something to have daily.

And he stresses its essential to rely on advice from healthcare providers and peer-reviewed studies, not TikTokers, for dietary advice.

I would approach nutrition and wellness trends on TikTok with a healthy dose of skepticism, Gallagher says. Research, but be wary of what sites are advertising benefits. Its good to question what biases sites might have, and when in doubt, research scientific studies or medical organizations specifically.

NIH-funded research reveals aging rates vary and evolutionary tricks such as armor and venom have influence.

Looking at data from more than 100 different animals, researchers have revealed some insights into aging that may help better understand longevity in humans. The study showed that cold-blooded, four-legged animals also known as ectothermic tetrapods can age very quickly, or extremely slowly.

Ectotherms are animals that rely on heat from their environment to regulate their body temperature, and tetrapods are vertebrate animals with four limbs. The category of ectothermic tetrapods includes non-avian reptiles, such as turtles; and amphibians, such as salamanders.

The study, funded by the National Institute on Aging at the National Institutes of Health and published in Science, also revealed that aging rates decrease in species with slow-paced lives. In addition, the data suggest that animals with protective traits, such as armor, venom, shells, and spines, exhibit slower aging rates. When comparing ectoderms with endotherms (the category of warm-blooded organisms that includes mammals and most birds), the research team found that ectotherms have a higher diversity of aging rates. This evolutionary study on aging may help researchers better understand aging in humans.

Researchers contributed data from 107 animals from around the world, representing 77 species of reptiles and amphibians in the wild. The scientists examined four different factors to determine whether they contributed to aging: thermoregulation, or the ability of warm-blooded animals to maintain body temperature; environmental temperature; protective traits; and pace of life. They found that turtles, crocodiles, and salamanders have significantly low aging rates and are long-lived for their size. Species with protective traits lived longer than those with no protection. Estimates of ectotherm longevity ranged from 1 year to 137 years.

Longevity: The vitamin that can slash your risk of dying from ‘any medical cause’ by 57% – Express

Longevity has become big business, with investors ploughing vast sums into this space in the hope of big returns. Amid all this excitement, it's easy to feel that the task is bigger than you. However, research shows there is much you can do to boost longevity.

A meta-analysis compares the findings of multiple studies to arrive at a more definitive conclusion on any given inquiry.

Results were adjusted for age, sex, season of blood draw, education, BMI, smoking and physical activity.

One model also adjusted for comorbid diseases (where more than one disease or condition is present) that could affect mortality such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Doctor Brewer broke down the key findings: This is very exciting research and in addition, other studies carried out in eight countries and involving over 26,000 adults aged 50 plus, found that those with the highest vitamin D levels were 57 percent less likely to die from any medical cause during the study durations than those with the lowest levels.

"Despite vitamin D3 levels varying with country, sex, and season, the association between those with the lowest and those with the highest vitamin D level within each country was remarkably consistent."

The study is not an outlier. A growing body of evidence points to the benefits of maintaining healthy vitamin D levels.

A new study, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggests vitamin D helps to bolster the brain against decline.

The study, involving over 295,000 genetic profiles in the UK Biobank, suggests that low vitamin D levels is associated with reduced brain volumes and that correcting vitamin D deficiency could prevent as many as 17 percent of cases of dementia.

Even when the sun is shining, many people also fail to make enough vitamin D because they avoid the sun, cover up or use high SPF sunscreens.

With this in mind, Doctor Sarah Brewer advised: The minimum suggested intake of 10mcg vitamin D3 per day is needed to prevent vitamin D deficiency conditions such as muscle and bone aches and pains, osteomalacia or rickets.

"For optimum health, there is increasing evidence that higher doses of 25mcg to 50mcg vitamin D are needed, especially for older people as the ability to synthesise vitamin D declines in later life.

How long are your fingers? The finger length most commonly associated with ‘longevity’ – Express

If you look hard enough, the body reveals many clues about your general health. Research published in the American Journal of Human Biology suggests the length of your fingers may predict how long you will live. The purpose of the study, entitled "Finger length ratio in longevity populations", was to compare the prevalence of finger length ratio between three longevity populations (Abkhazians, Azerbaijanis, and Georgians) and one non-longevity population (Russians), as well as between a longevity and non-longevity sample within one ethnic group (Abkhazians).

Researchers compared the prevalence of finger length ratio in longevity versus non-longevity samples.

They compared the following finger length ratios with the different populations:

A negative relationship was observed between longevity index and prevalence of type 1 ratio.

In the longevity populations, the prevalence of type 1 ratio was lower and the prevalence of type 3 ratio was higher than in the non-longevity sample of Russians.

The researchers concluded: "Finger length ratio pattern in longevity populations differs from that of non-longevity populations.

"In longevity samples, the prevalence of type 1 ratio was lower and the prevalence of type 3 ratio was higher vs the non-longevity sample.

"A similar type of difference was seen in the longevity and non-longevity samples belonging to one ethnic group, the Abkhazians."

They added: "Previous studies found that the type 1 finger length ratio was related to important morbidities that have a potential for shortening the life span.

Researchers made the discovery after comparing the hands of 1,500 prostate cancer patients with 3,000 healthy men.

One of the report authors, Professor Ros Eeles, said more studies would be needed, but if these confirmed the findings it could be used as a simple test for prostate cancer risk.

She said: "This exciting finding means that finger pattern could potentially be used to select at-risk men for ongoing screening, perhaps in combination with other factors such as family history or genetic testing."

The study was funded by the charities Prostate Action and Cancer Research UK.
