Scientists mind-blowing discovery ties gut health to age reversal – Express

The gut microbial is increasingly recognised as an important regulator of host immunity and brain health. Evidence has been accumulating for almost a decade that the composition of the microbiome changes with age. Changes induced by ageing have been associated with cognitive decline and other mental health conditions. A new study conducted on mice has found that one procedure could reverse aspects of the ageing process altogether.

Research published in the journal of ageing on Monday, revealed that older mice who receive microbiota from younger mice showed improved brain function and behaviour.

The guts microbiota is a term used to describe the collection of bacteria, archaea and eukaryotes colonising the gastrointestinal tract.

Marcus Bhme, a neuroscientist with University College Cork and author of the study, said the new mouse model has offered powerful insight on how the stomach affects our brain health as we age.

He said: It was really great to see that full change in [the mices] microbiomes can really excel such effects on cognitive behaviour, like almost resembling the learning performance of young mice, it was pretty mind-blowing."

For the analysis, researchers collected fecal samples from younger mice and translated them into the older mices intestines to cultivate similar gut microbiomes.

The researchers noted that the procedure was only feasible because older mice already have similar gut microbiota to that of younger mice.

The team then administered behavioural tests to the older mice to measure how their brain function may have changed.

This was determined by submerging the mice in a pool of water to observe how efficiently they navigated their way to a platform, a procedure known as the Morris Water test.

The researchers thereafter carried out further examination of the hippocampus, to determine how the mice's brains changed following the transplant.

Although fecal microbiota transplants are highly unlikely to be practiced on humans, they provide valuable insight into which microbes may be missing from an older person's microbiota.

John Cyran, also author of the study, explained: Im not recommending that we should go into poo transplants in humans, because we have no evidence that it would work in humans.

But what we do have evidence of is that by targeting the microbes, we can identify which strains exactly are missing."

Katherine Guzzetta, Ph.D. student at University College Cork and author of the study, noted that knowledge of gut health may also improve the quality of life of pets, allowing them to feel good into old age.

Furthermore, the study could highlight which aspects of diet are indispensable for brain health as we age.

Previous studies have highlighted strong links between the gut and the brain, notably their ability to communicate to each other through the vagus nerve.

The nerve sends signals from the gastrointestinal tract up to the brain.

Many scientists have referred to the gut as the second brain, because it produces many of the same neurotransmitters as the brain does, like dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid.

Serotonin, which plays a key role in regulating mood, is also made in the digestive tract.

Over the past couple of decades, numerous studies have provided evidence that age-associated shifts in the gut microbiome contribute to increased predisposition of aged individuals to certain diseases.

Such diseases include cardiovascular diseases, cancer, obesity, diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases, which affects cognitive health.

There are plenty of reasons to hop in the pool this summer. To cool off, to crush a few laps, and the list goes on. But one of the best reasons to take a dip, according to Seena Mathew, PhD, a neurobiologist and assistant professor of biology at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, is that swimming is a superior exercise for your brain health and longevity.

For starters, swimminglike pretty much all other types of aerobic exercisereleases endorphins in your brain. "And that helps you feel better, so that's why with swimming you tend to have a change in depression and anxiety, and over time people don't see those symptoms as much," says Dr. Mathew. What sets swimming apart from cardio workouts like running and spinning, though, is that it's been more closely linked to boosting the brain chemicals associated with memory and cognition.

When I ask Dr. Mathew to give me the 101 Guide to what happens biologically while you swim, she explains that research has shown that the exercise releases a growth factor and peptide in your brain called brain derived neurotrophic factor (or, BDNF for short). "It's been found that when you have memory impairments and cognitive decline, you have lower levels of BDNF, and what has been seen is that swimming helps to increase those levels," she says. "This helps with memory and cognition, so over time, your memory is improving or staying the same as you age instead of declining."

The thing is, we don't exactly knowwhy all of this happens in your brain, only that it does. As Dr. Mathew put it in a recent, well-cited paper, "Researchers dont yet know what swimmings secret sauce might be, but theyre getting closer to understanding it." Much of the research that has been done on the subject was conducted on rats, but one 2019 study conducted on 18 adult swimmers found that 20 minutes of swimming at a moderate pace helped to boost brain function, which is an indication that swimming for brain health could be the real deal, and we can begin to verify that with more research.

Dr. Mathew postulates that it could have something to do with the calming effects that water has on the brain. "Some of it could be that when you're entering the water, you're already at a different mental state, so you're getting into a meditative rhythm," she says. Though you may be able to achieve the same type of meditative state while running or cycling, research shows it's more common when you're in the water because, "you can kind of just tune out all the sounds, so it's just your breath and the water," says Dr. Mathew.

Beyond environmental aspects, there's also the fact that swimming employs your entire body. "I think another big aspect is that when you're swimming, your whole body is working," she adds. "You're still working your cardiovascular system when you're running, but when you're swimming you're also getting that added level of resistance from the water, so you're working your whole body more than you would be with other aerobic activities."

How to live longer: Bacteria in the gut could boost longevity study – Toys Matrix

Living in the gut are 300 to 500 different kinds of bacteria containing nearly two million genes. When paired with other organisms, they make up whats known as the microbiata, which is unique to each person. A study published in Nature, found that people who live past their 100th birthday are more likely to carry certain bacteria in their gut that produce powerful antimicrobial compounds.

For the study, researchers analysed centenarians microbiata through stool samples gathered from 160 people aged over 100.

They compared the centenarians microbiata to those of 122 elderly individuals aged 85 to 89, and 47 individuals aged 21 to 55.

The study found that odirobacteriaceae a bacteria that stops the growth of other dangerous bacteria by producing unique bile acids was largely present in the gut of those aged over 100.

From the samples, researchers observed that the centenarians were enriched in the gut microbes capable of generating the unique bile acid, compared with elderly and young individuals.

According to the National Institutes of Health, bile is a fluid produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder.

Bile acids are compounds in bile that aid in digestion.

After the liver produces bile acids, they are released into the intestine, where they are chemically modified into secondary bile acids.

The author of the study, Professor Kenya Honda, at Keio University of Medicine in Tokyo, told the Daily Mail: Perhaps genetic factors and diet have influence on the composition of the guts microbiota.

The bile acid, known as isoallo-lithocholic acid, has previously been found to have a strong antimicrobial effect against a range of gut pathogens.

The acid proved particularly efficient at fending off the drug-resistant pathogen Clostridioides difficile, a bacterium known to cause severe diarrhoea, especially in people being treated with antibiotics.

According to the NHS, C. difficile infections can sometimes lead to serious bowel complications.

Researchers also found the bile acid metabolites demonstrated significant effect against Enterococcus faecium, which studies have found has an inherent tenacity to build resistance to antibiotics and environmental stressors that allow it to thrive in hospital environments.

Professor Honda added: Our findings show an association between Odoribacteriaceae and centenarians.

Although it might suggest that these bile-acid-producing bacteria may contribute to longer lifespans, we do not have any data showing the cause and effect relationship between them.

Previous studies have found that the community of bacteria and other microorganisms that live in the gut, play a significant role in our health as we age.

Numerous studies have highlighted the link between gut health and the immune system, mental health and autoimmune diseases.

A lack of diversity in bacteria has previously been linked to frailty in older adults.

The gut starts in the mouth and teeth, and finishes at the end of the large intestine. It includes the oesophagus, the stomach, the small intestine, and the colon.

Many factors can contribute to an unhealthy gut, including high stress levels, insomnia, processed and sugar foods or even prescribed antibiotics.

Longevity Noodles with Ginger Chicken and Mushrooms – The Splendid Table

Fresh Chinese noodles are found in the refrigerator section of most Asian food markets. The best noodles for lo mein are about 1/4-inch thick and are sold in 1-pound packages. You can use 8 to 10 ounces of dry spaghetti in place of the fresh noodles. For the Lunar New Year noodles are often served because they symbolize longevity. In addition, shiitake mushrooms symbolize prosperity and scallions bestows intelligence.

INGREDIENTS

12 ounces fresh Chinese thick, round egg noodles

2 teaspoons Asian sesame oil

12 ounces skinless, boneless chicken thigh or breast, cut into 1/4-inch-thick bite-sized slices

1 tablespoon finely shredded ginger

1 teaspoon plus 1 tablespoon Shao Hsing rice wine or dry sherry

1 teaspoon cornstarch

1 teaspoon plus 1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon white pepper

2 tablespoons peanut or vegetable oil

teaspoon red pepper flakes

3 cups thinly sliced Napa cabbage (about 5 ounces)

4 ounces fresh shiitake mushrooms, caps removed and thinly sliced (about 2 cups)

cup finely shredded scallions

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large pot bring about 2 quarts water to a boil over high heat. When the water comes to a rolling boil, add the noodles. Return to a rolling boil, and boil according to package directions until al dente. Carefully pour the noodles into a colander and rinse several times with cold water. Drain the noodles in a colander shaking well to remove excess water. Return the noodles to the unwashed pot, add the sesame oil and toss until well combined. Set aside.

2. Put the chicken in a shallow bowl and add the ginger, 1 teaspoon of the rice wine, cornstarch, 1 teaspoon of the soy sauce, 1/4 teaspoon of the salt, and pepper. In a small bowl combine the remaining 1 tablespoon rice wine, and 1 tablespoon soy sauce.

3. Heat a 14-inch flat-bottomed wok over high heat until a bead of water vaporizes within 1 to 2 seconds of contact. Swirl in 1 tablespoon of the peanut oil, add the red pepper flakes, then using a metal spatula, stir-fry 5 seconds or until the pepper flakes are fragrant. Push the red pepper flakes to the sides of the wok, carefully add the chicken mixture and spread evenly in one layer in the wok. Cook undisturbed 1 minute, letting the chicken begin to sear. Stir-fry 30 seconds or until the chicken begins to brown. Add the cabbage and mushrooms and stir-fry 1 minute or until the cabbage is just wilted but the chicken is not cooked through. Transfer the chicken and vegetables to a plate.

4. Swirl the remaining 1 tablespoon peanut oil into the wok. Add the noodles and stir-fry 15 seconds. Restir the soy sauce mixture, swirl it into wok, add the scallions, chicken mixture, and sprinkle on the remaining 3/4 teaspoon salt. Stir-fry 1 to 2 minutes or until chicken is cooked through and noodles are heated through.
