While the goal is always to consume a normocaloric pattern of nutrition (i.e., for your calories taken in to match your personalized metabolic needs), there are some things to keep in mind.For instance, when caloric intake regularly exceeds needs, this can result in energy balance being off-kilter.

When it comes to striking energy balance, I don't have to tell you that our current food environment is working against us. In the last few decades, we've experienced a major one-two punch: Portion sizes have drastically increased, while the nutritional quality of our food has plummeted.

What's more, we know from rodents and primates, to Homo sapiens ourselvesconserving calories not only helps one achieve and maintain a healthy weight but, more importantly, results in positive changes in body composition, namely less excess adiposity (fat mass) and more lean muscle tissue (fat-free mass).

On the flip side, excess calories, fat storage, insulin resistance, and shorter life span are intertwined. Not a fun web to be tangled in. For example, we know that elevated insulin levels are clearly tied to accelerated aging, a relationship that's conserved across many species.

Consuming fewer calories from food is directly related to cardiometabolic health gains in the realm of insulin sensitivity, heart physiology, and even liver health. What's more, clinical studies indicate that being thrifty with calories leads to biomarker improvements that indicate the "pace of aging is delayed."

Is anyone else's mind blown that we have the ability to quite literally pace ourselves, for our well-being and fullness of life? I personally find it very empowering.

It may be that there is an effect, says cell biologist Wolfgang Wagner at the University of Aachen in Germany. But the results are not rock-solid because the study is very small and not well controlled.

The latest trial was designed mainly to test whether growth hormone could be used safely in humans to restore tissue in the thymus gland. The gland, which is in the chest between the lungs and the breastbone, is crucial for efficient immune function.

What the Thymus Gland does:

White blood cells are produced in the bone marrow and then mature inside the thymus, where they become specialized T cells that help the body fight infections and cancers. In simple words, a type of lymphocyte that develops in the thymus gland, T-cells are essential to human immunity. As we age the thymus gland starts to shrink after puberty and increasingly becomes clogged with fat.

The epigenetic clock is an age predictor based on DNA methylation levels. It is dependent on the bodys epigenome, which is a complete description of all the chemical modificationssuch as methyl groupsthat tag DNA and histone proteins.

The pattern of these tags changes throughout the course of a persons life, and tracks their biological age, which does not necessarily coincide with their chronological age.

According to the researchers, additional studies need to be done on immunosenescence.

Evidence from animal and some human studies shows that growth hormone stimulates regeneration of the thymus. But this hormone can also promote diabetes, so the trial included two widely used anti-diabetic drugs, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and metformin, in the treatment cocktail.

What "not to do" or what to "give up" to age healthier?

Ageing is inevitable. But take the dullness, stress, ill-health, and regret out of the process. Go easy on sugar if you cannot give up the artificial option altogether. Pusha T recently sat down with NME to speak about his longevity as a rapper.

The 44-year-old Virginia rapper recently released his fourth studio album titled, Its Almost Dry. The 12-track mixtape saw the minds of producing legends Pharrell and the artist previously known as Kanye West, evenly split the production of the album. When it comes to producing a record for the current time period, Pusha says,

Its all about creating the best product you can create. Thats just the standard. I want people to look at this street rap narration that Im painting and understand that this is all I want to make.

Pusha exudes confidence throughout his entire Its Almost Dry album. He discussed how the album initially came about recalling, It might have started with Ye and just a couple of beats that he had pulled aside for me. I toyed with them and once I got into a [mindset] of trying to outdo Daytona, I was like, How do I do that? And so I crossed the street and went over to Pharells and was like, OK youre going to do half and hes going to do half. His choice to involve both Pharrell and Ye was well thought out, admitting that he knew that if he med both of those, Im only putting out greatness.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is an important part of maintaining good health and helping you feel your best.

The gut microbiota, the body's largest population of microorganisms, are increasingly recognised as an important regulator of host immunity and brain health.

All food is ultimately broken down in the gut to a simple form that can enter the bloodstream and be delivered as nutrients throughout our bodies. This is only possible with a healthy digestive system.

A healthy gut contains healthy bacteria and immune cells that ward off infectious agents like bacteria, viruses and fungi.

A healthy gut also communicates with the brain through nerves and hormones, which helps maintain general health and well-being.

They can be found in the intestine, and a new study has found they they play a vital role in regulating some of the detrimental effects of ageing, meaning it could be a key to living longer.

It has been known for some time that the population of microbes that we carry around in our gut, collectively called the gut microbiota, is linked to overall health.

From inflammatory bowel diseases, cardiovascular, autoimmune, metabolic and neurodegenerative disorders; our gut microbiome could be the determining factor for disease reduction and longevity.

In a new study, faecal transplants in mice showed a reverse of some of the effects of ageing in both the retina and the brain.

Researchers exchanged the gut microbes among three groups of mice: three months old, designed as "young," 18 months old, designated as "old," and 24 months old mice, classified at "aged." A mouse that is two years old is equivalent to a human who is between 70 and 80 years old.

They then analysed the changes in gut composition to better understand how faecal transplantation affected inflammation on the gut barrier, retina of the eye and the brain, which decline with age partly due to chronic inflammation.

Researchers found transferring "faecal slurries" from aged donors to young mice led to a weakening of the gut lining, which allowed bacterial products to enter the circulation, triggering an inflammatory response in the brain and eyes.

However, the harmful effects were shown to be be reversed by faecal transplants from the young donor mice into older mice.

The team also found specific proteins associated with retinal degeneration were elevated in the young mice who received a faecal transplant from the old donors, further bolstering the claims of how ones gut microbiome can affect longevity.

"Our data support the suggestion that altered gut microbiota in old age contributes to intestinal and systemic inflammation, and so may contribute to driving inflammatory pathologies of aged organs," wrote the study authors.

Professor Simon Carding, from UEA's Norwich Medical School and head of the Gut Microbes and Health Research Programme at the Quadram Institute, added: "This ground-breaking study provides tantalising evidence for the direct involvement of gut microbes in ageing and the functional decline of brain function and vision and offers a potential solution in the form of gut microbe replacement therapy."

How to live longer: Eating when most active boosts longevity – Verve Times

Time and resources are increasingly being devoted to the task of extending life expectancy. It has become the next frontier in Silicon Valley. However fanciful it may seem, strides are being made in this space.

One of the promising findings of late was published in the journal Science.

In a study that followed hundreds of mice over their lifespans, calorie restriction combined with time-restricted eating boosted longevity.

One of the most interesting insights to come out of the study is the impact eating at a specific time of the day can have on lifespan.

Eating only during their most active time of day substantially extended the lifespan of mice on a reduced-calorie diet, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator Joseph Takahashi and other colleagues involved in the study reported.

The research helps disentangle the controversy around diet plans that emphasise eating only at certain times of day, said Takahashi, a molecular biologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Takahashis teams findings highlight the crucial role of metabolism in ageing, said Sai Krupa Das, a nutrition scientist at the Jean

To unravel the effects of calories, fasting, and daily, or circadian, rhythms on longevity, Takahashis team undertook an extensive four-year experiment.

The team housed hundreds of mice with automated feeders to control when and how much each mouse ate for its entire lifespan.

Some of the mice could eat as much as they wanted, while others had their calories restricted by 30 to 40 percent.

And those on calorie-restricted diets ate on different schedules. Mice fed the low-calorie diet at night, over either a two-hour or 12-hour period, lived the longest, the team discovered.

The results suggest that time-restricted eating has positive effects on the body, even if it doesnt promote weight loss.

Takahashi points out that his study likewise found no differences in body weight among mice on different eating schedules however, we found profound differences in lifespan.

Rafael de Cabo, a gerontology researcher at the National Institute on Ageing in Baltimore said that the Science paper is a very elegant demonstration that even if you are restricting your calories but you are not [eating at the right times], you do not get the full benefits of caloric restriction.

Takahashi hopes that learning how calorie restriction affects the bodys internal clocks as we age will help scientists find new ways to extend the healthy lifespan of humans.

That could come through calorie-restricted diets, or through drugs that mimic those diets effects.

In the meantime, Takahashi is taking a lesson from his mice he restricts his own eating to a 12-hour period.

But, he said, if we find a drug that can boost your clock, we can then test that in the laboratory and see if that extends lifespan.

Weezer is also glad to be back on the road performing live again! Following the Beachlife Festival, the legendary Rock band will headline the Hella Mega Tour in Europe this summer alongside Green Day and Fall Out Boy. During the interview, Bell even recalled the most badass show he ever attendedat the age of 15 in Knoxville, Tennessee. And ever since, he promised himself that would always deliver onstage once he became an artist.

When asked whats the secret to having a successful band after all these years, Bell gave a simple yet intriguing answer. I dont know if its a secret. Its just hard work, he revealed.
