ABSTRACT

Epidemiological studies of human longevity found two interesting features, robust advantage of female lifespan and consistent reduction of lifespan variation. To help understand the genetic aspects of these phenomena, the current study examined sex differences and variation of longevity using previously published mouse data sets including data on lifespan, age of puberty, and circulating insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) levels in 31 inbred strains, data from colonies of nuclear-receptor-interacting protein 1 (Nrip1) knockout mice, and a congenic strain, B6.C3H-Igf1. Looking at the overall data for all inbred strains, the results show no significant difference in lifespan and lifespan variation between sexes; however, considerable differences were found among and within strains. Across strains, lifespan variations of female and male mice are significantly correlated. Strikingly, between sexes, IGF1 levels correlate with the lifespan variation and maximum lifespan in different directions. Female mice with low IGF1 levels have higher variation and extended maximum lifespan. The opposite is detected in males. Compared to domesticated inbred strains, wild-derived inbred strains have elevated lifespan variation due to increased early deaths in both sexes and extended maximum lifespan in female mice. Intriguingly, the sex differences in survival curves of inbred strains negatively associated with age of female puberty, which is significantly accelerated in domesticated inbred strains compared to wild-derived strains. In conclusion, this study suggests that genetic factors are involved in the regulation of sexual disparities in lifespan and lifespan variation, and dissecting the mouse genome may provide novel insight into the underlying genetic mechanisms.

New Delhi: One thing that has really shocked people around the world is the diverse range of symptoms that COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus exhibits in people infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. While some people do not develop any symptoms throughout the illness, even when they test positive for the virus, others develop mild to severe symptoms, a few days after contracting the virus, and soon recover from them. However, there is a group of people who suffer from various symptoms from the beginning of the illness, to months after they test negative for the virus. A small group of people around the world are also experiencing symptoms so severe, that they have proven fatal and led to the loss of life as well.

While researchers look into the virus and try to devise treatment methods and a safe, effective vaccine for the prevention of COVID-19, researchers have now stumbled upon some information that may explain the wide range of COVID-19 symptoms. According to the latest reports, studies suggest that the number of COVID-19 symptoms a patient has at the beginning of the disease can determine its longevity as well.

Researchers studied more than 4,000 people from the US, UK, and Sweden. They found that COVID-19 patients who had more than five symptoms of the infection during the first week of illness were more likely to be associated with Long COVID a condition where symptoms of the disease last for months, even after recovery.

Among the participants, subjects who experienced symptoms for more than 28 days, identified as a relatively long infection, were mostly older people, and more females. These patients were also reported to more likely require hospital care, as compared to those who had symptoms for a shorter period ten days or less.

The study has been published in the pre-print medRxiv, and is yet to be peer-reviewed.

At the population level, it is critical to quantify the burden of Long-COVID to better assess its impact on the healthcare system and appropriately distribute resources, the researchers from the University College London said in their paper.

In our study, prospective logging of a wide range of symptoms allowed us to conclude that the proportion of people with symptomatic COVID-19 who experience prolonged symptoms is considerable, and relatively stable across three countries with different cultures, they added.

All participants of the study were asked to record their symptoms in an app on their mobile devices, from March 25th to June 30th.

558 people had symptoms that lasted 28 days. 189 people's symptoms lasted more than 8 weeks, and 95 people had symptoms for more than 12 weeks. Around 1500 people had a short disease duration.

According to the study, the five symptoms that were seen during the first week of sickness were most predictive of prolonged illness, in both men and women. These symptoms included fatigue, headache, difficulty breathing, hoarse voice, and muscle pains. Memory and concentration issues, ear ringing, were also among the common onset symptoms.

Researchers also found that only one pre-existing condition, asthma, was associated with long-COVID.

5 Lessons I Learned About Longevity From Working in a Retirement Community – The Good Men Project

I briefly worked in a retirement community. I met lots of people in their late 80s and 90s. There were plenty of traits that separated them from people who might not have lived as long, as well as those who were in great health later in life versus poor health.

Here are 5 traits I noticed in many of these people who had lived a long life, and some of which are backed by science:

1. They were physically active every day. This seemed to be the number one factor separating those with good versus poor health. There were two women in particular in their 90s that I would see go into the gym each day. They were in great health and had been exercising for their entire lives. As a friend of mine phrased it, You have to keep the equipment moving. In general, the people I noticed who were in the best health were regularly active.

2. They were involved in their community. Even though they were retired, those in the best health were still actively involved in their community. Many of them were volunteers, and some of them were even still working. One woman in her 90s had been a nurse in her younger days and she was teaching as a volunteer at a local school. From this I learned that the importance of having a sense of purpose to overall well-being and longevity.

3. They kept a schedule. Those who seemed the most lively kept a strict schedule for themselves. Even though they were retired, they still set an alarm in the morning and got up to do various activities throughout the day. Some of them kept a similar schedule to the one they had when they were working, before retirement, and some of them were still working in some capacity.

4. They were social. They made and kept up friendships. There were a lot of friendships in the community two of the women in their 80s and 90s were even going on a cruise together. One of them described it as her last big vacation, which was a bittersweet way to phrase it. Many of them had family support as well, with relatives who would come visit them or with whom they would stay in regular contact. Or, they were otherwise involved in their community in some sort of social setting.

5. They were interested in what was going on in the world. It seems that if you stay interested with what is going on in the world, whether that is current events, or events in your own community, you feel more compelled to have a reason to live.

Overall, the two key factors of living a long life were the ability to maintain social relations and keeping physically active. What I heard a lot while working there was essentially that as long as you have a reason and purpose to live, life will continue flowing through you.

100-year-old WWII veteran shares secrets of longevity, success – WPRI.com

HAMPTON, Va. (NewsNation Now) I am doing great. It is a wonderful afternoon. Just a little cloudy in Hampton, otherwise a great day.

That quick and cheerful response may make one wonder, Whats he been drinking, and eating, and doing, to sound so, so, full of life, at 100 years old?

Major Anthony Grant, U.S. Army, retired, reached the age of 100 this past January. On his 21st birthday in 1942, he, and the rest of the nation were still reeling after the Japanese surprisingly attacked Pearl Harbor Navy Base in Hawaii. That prompted the United States to join World War II, and thus, begin drafting all able-bodied young men into the armed forces. Grant received his notice at his home in Harlem, New York that April.

I was working as a printers apprentice because I loved the printing trade, said Grant, looking into his computers camera during the Zoom interview.

Grant was born in New York, but, while a toddler, his mother sent him to St. Lucia, to live with family in the Carribean islands.

Fifteen years later, Grant was back in the Big Apple, with big dreams for an 18-year-old Black man.

Eventually, I wanted to become a journalist. That was my aim in the long run, he said.

Grants first assignment was to report for duty in April at a government office in downtown Manhattan. He arrived two hours early.

I was not scared, but I was nervous, because, in anticipation of what was going on.I realized that once I got in the Army, my life would change forever.

Those changes began with an introduction to racism.

Grant did basic and specialty training at the Armys Fort Dix, New Jersey, and Fort Lee in Petersburg, Virginia.

My commanders forwarned the black troops, especially those from the north, to be very careful when you visit the town(s). When he and other troops wanted to leave a base and travel into a community, Grant said the buses would load all the white troops first.

Attitudes towards Blacks, farther south, were more threatening.

Theres a town called Grenada, Mississippi and I was in the camp near the base for six months. And I went in town only twice. I only spent 15 minutes. Walked one or two blocks and came right back, because I didnt want to give the police any excuse.

Like many other Blacks in military service during World War II, Grant was assigned to the Quartermaster Corps. He loaded, stored and delivered supplies to troops fighting the enemy on the front lines.

In June 1944, those front lines were about 50 miles of beach along Normandy, France. Grant and his battalion landed several days after the massive allied attack on German Forces, better known at D-Day.

More than 150,000 American, Canadian and British troops captured the beach and began pushing the occupying German forces inland.

By the time Grant arrived, about 10 days later, within the beach itself, it was complete chaos. Burned equipment, abandoned clothing, abandoned shoes, abandoned helmets, burned out jeeps.

As allied forces pushed toward Germany, Grants troops supplied them. And, they, too, came under fire.

Ive been shot at, and in turn, I shot my weapon, but there was no immediate act like hand-to-hand or person-to-person exchange. Out of about 500 men, we probably lost about ten. And the ten were fired upon while they were driving their trucks in a combat area.

Throughout the interview, Grant kept referring to we. He said he and his fellow soldiers were a team, and that no one accomplished anything alone.

After the war, Grant remained in Europe with the occupying troops. Eventually, he served all over the continent, Korea and Japan, Grant slowly moved up the enlisted ranks, and topped out as a Warrant Officer 2. He was offered a commission and retired after 20 years with the rank of Major, in 1963.

Meantime, Grant and his wife, Bernadette, raised two boys and two girls. Bernadette died in 2015. Grant was 95. The loving couple had been married for 67 years. Their legacy also includes nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

He still appears to be in good health, possesses a quick wit and hearty laugh, at 100 and a half years old.

When asked if he has a secret to longevity.

Yes, I do, he said while laughing.

Mr. Grant shuffles several pages of notes, thinks for a moment, then looks up and says, Have a positive mind, have a positive mind. Things will get better tomorrow.
