OneSkin: Longevity Research Meets the Future of Skin Health – BeautyMatter

For the team at the longevity company OneSkin, it is about extending the health and youthfulness of the skin, or skinspan as they call it. Launched in 2016 as a biotech start-up after acceptance into IndieBio,the worlds leading scienceaccelerator, the business has released its first product via DTC e-commerce. Their Topical Skin Supplement featuring a proprietary peptide, OS-01, is designed to reduce the skins biological age byimproving the skin barrier, supporting DNA damage repair, and preventing the accumulation of senescent cells.

Our goal was to develop a product that extends skinspan, the period of time your skin is healthy and youthful, said Carolina Reis, co-founder and CEO at OneSkin. Our roots are in longevity science and we saw a need to shift the current paradigm. Instead of short-term fixes that focus purely on aesthetics, were targeting the rootcause of aging and optimizing skin health on a molecular level. We believe what we put on our skin should besafe, effective, and help to maximize our human potential.

Committed to delivering innovation through a rigorous scientific validation process, OneSkin runs end-to-end Research & Development in-house. We arent simply backed by science, we live and breathe science in the OneSkin lab on a daily basis, said Reis.

The Team: The team is led and co-founded by four PhDsCarolina Reis, Alessandra Zonari, Mariana Boroni, Juliana Carvalhoand includes Senior Scientist Lear Brace, a Harvard PhD and Postdoctoral Fellow at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, and Peter Diamandis as one of their advisors.

The Product: The Topical Supplement delivers OS-01, a proprietary peptide that extends long-term skin health by targeting the root cause of aging at the molecular level.

The Science: OneSkins scientific team iscomprised of leading scientists with expertise in stem cell biology, skin regeneration, tissue engineering, biochemistry, bioinformatics, molecular biology, immunology, and aging. By optimizing skin health on the molecular level and increasing skin strength, OneSkin is able to extend skinspan.

The team measures skinspan in two ways.

By combining these tools OneSkin is able to understand the full efficacy of different products, including how products influence gene and protein expression, skin barrier, and skin structure, in order to ensure the Topical Skin Supplement is the most effective at promoting long-term skin health.

The Funding: The brand has secured a total of $7.5 million in funding. IndieBio, SOSV Ventures, and 2Future Holding all participated in the brands $2 million seed round in 2017. The brands most recent funding round occurred in July 2020, with an angel investment of $1.5 million, following a $3.5 million post-seed round in July 2019 from several angel investors.

100-year-old WWII veteran shares secrets of longevity, success – WPRI.com

HAMPTON, Va. (NewsNation Now) I am doing great. It is a wonderful afternoon. Just a little cloudy in Hampton, otherwise a great day.

That quick and cheerful response may make one wonder, Whats he been drinking, and eating, and doing, to sound so, so, full of life, at 100 years old?

Major Anthony Grant, U.S. Army, retired, reached the age of 100 this past January. On his 21st birthday in 1942, he, and the rest of the nation were still reeling after the Japanese surprisingly attacked Pearl Harbor Navy Base in Hawaii. That prompted the United States to join World War II, and thus, begin drafting all able-bodied young men into the armed forces. Grant received his notice at his home in Harlem, New York that April.

I was working as a printers apprentice because I loved the printing trade, said Grant, looking into his computers camera during the Zoom interview.

Grant was born in New York, but, while a toddler, his mother sent him to St. Lucia, to live with family in the Carribean islands.

Fifteen years later, Grant was back in the Big Apple, with big dreams for an 18-year-old Black man.

Eventually, I wanted to become a journalist. That was my aim in the long run, he said.

Grants first assignment was to report for duty in April at a government office in downtown Manhattan. He arrived two hours early.

I was not scared, but I was nervous, because, in anticipation of what was going on.I realized that once I got in the Army, my life would change forever.

Those changes began with an introduction to racism.

Grant did basic and specialty training at the Armys Fort Dix, New Jersey, and Fort Lee in Petersburg, Virginia.

My commanders forwarned the black troops, especially those from the north, to be very careful when you visit the town(s). When he and other troops wanted to leave a base and travel into a community, Grant said the buses would load all the white troops first.

Attitudes towards Blacks, farther south, were more threatening.

Theres a town called Grenada, Mississippi and I was in the camp near the base for six months. And I went in town only twice. I only spent 15 minutes. Walked one or two blocks and came right back, because I didnt want to give the police any excuse.

Like many other Blacks in military service during World War II, Grant was assigned to the Quartermaster Corps. He loaded, stored and delivered supplies to troops fighting the enemy on the front lines.

In June 1944, those front lines were about 50 miles of beach along Normandy, France. Grant and his battalion landed several days after the massive allied attack on German Forces, better known at D-Day.

More than 150,000 American, Canadian and British troops captured the beach and began pushing the occupying German forces inland.

By the time Grant arrived, about 10 days later, within the beach itself, it was complete chaos. Burned equipment, abandoned clothing, abandoned shoes, abandoned helmets, burned out jeeps.

As allied forces pushed toward Germany, Grants troops supplied them. And, they, too, came under fire.

Ive been shot at, and in turn, I shot my weapon, but there was no immediate act like hand-to-hand or person-to-person exchange. Out of about 500 men, we probably lost about ten. And the ten were fired upon while they were driving their trucks in a combat area.

Throughout the interview, Grant kept referring to we. He said he and his fellow soldiers were a team, and that no one accomplished anything alone.

After the war, Grant remained in Europe with the occupying troops. Eventually, he served all over the continent, Korea and Japan, Grant slowly moved up the enlisted ranks, and topped out as a Warrant Officer 2. He was offered a commission and retired after 20 years with the rank of Major, in 1963.

Meantime, Grant and his wife, Bernadette, raised two boys and two girls. Bernadette died in 2015. Grant was 95. The loving couple had been married for 67 years. Their legacy also includes nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

He still appears to be in good health, possesses a quick wit and hearty laugh, at 100 and a half years old.

When asked if he has a secret to longevity.

Yes, I do, he said while laughing.

Mr. Grant shuffles several pages of notes, thinks for a moment, then looks up and says, Have a positive mind, have a positive mind. Things will get better tomorrow.

Agreeing with Gilman – The Star – The Star of Grand Coulee

Wow, it was great to hear from Ray Gilman in The Star newspaper last week. Ray served the Grand Coulee Dam School District as an administrator for decades. His loyalty and longevity were amazing. He is aware of what is going on with funding in our local school district, regionally and statewide.

Our school district is in the B school classification. B schools are the smallest size-wise in Washington state. With our student population, we are grossly over-staffed with administrators. Ray is spot on about the district office, but there is overstaffing in other systems within the organization. However, needing bus drivers now after laying them off does not make sense. Changes at the top must happen first, not with core systems like transportation.

To Rays main point, I want to focus on administration. Ray was correct that there are at least seven administrators here. The Dean of Students positions could be called vice principals, assistants, instructional coaches etc., but dont be fooled, they are administrative. He was kind to mention that these positions cost the district $563,000 annually. I know, from experience, that salary, benefits, stipends, buybacks, etc., amounts are closer to a million dollars annually just for local administration.

I also know from experience that to model fiscal stability, our school administrative team could function with combo positions, such as superintendent/elementary principal and secondary/alternative school principal. Our district would still need a special education director. Seniority, experience and expertise would hopefully be followed for the combo principal position choice.

These three individuals in combo positions would be performing duties where seven are in place presently. This would easily save our local school district over half a million dollars annually and this is just reflecting changes made at the administrative level only.

To further add to Rays thoughts, our local school district also receives significant Impact Aid funds each year. This is rarely mentioned. These federal funds are for reservation lands and military base school districts across our nation that have a limited tax base.

To be crystal clear, I am not questioning the compensation our school district administrators receive. What I am questioning, along with Ray, is the excessive number of administrators that are on the payroll for a B size school district that were being told is in a serious, financial crisis and is requesting more funding from community members.

I support our existing levy. However, in addition to this, I think we also passed another ballot measure request from the school district in addition to the previously passed levy. Clarity from the school district about what were already paying with past ballot measures has been poor. This new (additional) levy measure only needs 50% of yes votes to pass. This is a low benchmark percentage wise so it may be successful. However, as I mentioned previously, Im voting no along with Ray. It is hard to believe that final action to put this measure on our current ballot was done with full awareness of the pandemic situation. I dont know about you, but my property taxes have increased significantly and there is chatter of tax increases at the state level.

Locally, leadership must be courageous. Extremely tough decisions need to be made in a unified fashion starting at the top. As community members, we are not bobble-heads. We expect our school district to adjust to its current funding sources while stabilizing fiscally now and for the future. We need sound, creative solutions not excuses.

Increasing your consumption of fruits and vegetables is the best way to bolster your daily intake of these health-promoting compounds, said Dr Charlie Seltzer, a Philadelphia-based physician who specializes in anti-aging treatments.

He continued: The outer layers of many fruits and vegetables contain the highest concentrations of polyphenols, so don't peel off the skin before you eat them.

Another way to get more polyphenols from fruit is to consume them before they ripen, because polyphenol activity lessens as fruit ages.

A study showed that freeze-drying fruit,as opposed to chilling it,preserves 80 percent of its antioxidants, including polyphenols.

Cruciferous vegetable are powerhouses when it comes to overall health.

With the unique ability to modify human hormones, activate the bodys natural detoxification system and inhibit the growth of cancerous cells.

Cruciferous vegetables should be chewed thoroughly or eaten shredded, chopped, juiced, or blended in order to release their potent anti-cancer properties.

The cruciferous phytochemical sulforaphane has also been found to protect the blood vessel wall from inflammatory signalling that can lead to heart disease.

Cruciferous vegetables are the most nutrient-dense of all the foods.

For a smoothie with health benefits to boost longevity, try adding either broccoli, kale or cabbage.

The nutritional profile of seeds is very similar to nuts in that they provide healthy fats, minerals, and antioxidants, however, seeds have more protein and are abundant in trace minerals.

Flax, chia, and hemp seeds are rich in omega-3 fats.

Flax, chia, and sesame seeds are also rich lignans, breast cancer-fighting phytoestrogens.

Sesame seeds are rich in calcium and vitamin E, and pumpkin seeds are especially rich in zinc.

For maximum nutritional benefits, try adding flax or chia seeds to your daily smoothie.

All our cells are filled with small energy generators called mitochondria - but when mitochondria become old, they become less-efficient, and even possibly toxic.

Old mitochondria are recycled by the cell into new mitochondria - and this, in turn, is mitophagy.

With age, this recycling progress slows down which can lead to muscle weakness.

Scientists have discovered pomegranates contain a substance called urolithin A.

The red rich fruit is known to be one of the healthiest for a reason. It is called as a divine fruit because it is the most mentioned fruit in theological books.

Pomegranate has antioxidant, anti-viral and anti-tumour properties and is said to be a good source of vitamins, especially vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E, as well as folic acid.

Liverpools lesson in longevity that Rhian Brewster will never forget – This Is Anfield

Rhian Brewster was left with a lasting impression of Liverpools tireless work ethic before his departure to Sheffield United, with James Milner one of the key standard-bearers.

The 20-year-old sought pastures at the end of the summer transfer window, opting for a permanent departure rather than a second successive loan spell.

Brewster joined Liverpool back in 2015 as a 15-year-old and went on to make a total of four senior appearances, with an untimely ankle injury setting him back from making an earlier impact.

A natural finisher with flair, Brewster would become the Blades record signing in a deal worth up to 23.5 million as he searched for regular first-team football, which was not available at Liverpool in the short-term.

And while his future now lies elsewhere and he will be plotting the Reds downfall at Anfield, he has reflected fondly on his time at the club and the lasting lesson of work ethic and being a professional at all times.

Boxes Milner ticks all those boxes and was name-checked by the striker when reflecting on the legacy he hopes to one day leave.

Not one person slacks off and Ill always remember that. Even if I feel I want to, Brewster told the Daily Mail.

For example James Milner. Hes in his 30s and still going strong. Thats for a reason. Because he is always in the gym, eating right, doing everything he can to be the best. Thats one thing that Ill 100 percent take from Liverpool and James Milner.

I would 100 percent take that [longevity] and look what he is doing in his 30s and why cant I do that?

The standards, they set the bar very high and thats something I will never forget and hopefully people looking at me, when Im older they will hopefully feel the same way.

As for his quick return to his former home, Brewster admitted it will be weird but it will provide the ideal opportunity to say his final farewells after the swift nature of his departure.

Its going to be a bit weird, Brewster continued. But it will be a nice moment, just to see everybody. I didnt get to say goodbye because it [the transfer] happened so quick.

How Lockdown Changed Our Fashion Style and Mindsets Forever – Longevity LIVE

Needless to say, online retail will continue to dominate the fashion market even as we come out of lockdown.

One example that has been particularly popular during lockdown is the tent dress. Its easy to wear and high on style. The tent dress can be seen as the ultimate online shopping piece as it is loose-fitting, yet stylish. Dresses and other loosely fitting garments are becoming more popular when it comes to online shopping. This is because shoppers are far less likely to have to send them back due to a bad fit.

Another trend that weve seen blow up over lockdown, especially among the TikTok generation, is getting creative with garments. During our time spent in the house, we have seen a real resurgence of tie-dying, kitting, and other forms of customizing. Celebrity influencers have led the way, with eager crafters sharing their creations on social media.

For many, lockdown certainly unlocks a spirit of creativity. This artistic flare is likely to see consumers continue to get crafty with their clothing as we move forward.

Finally, lets talk about where our vital fashion-inspo has come from this year, amid a socially distanced world. For a while now, the world of fashion and the events that make it what it is, such as Fashion Week, has been veering towards an online future. However, Covid-19 has, again, sped up the process.

Events like London Fashion week have been held exclusively online. Its the age of Instagram influencers and fashion bloggers. Were no longer strangers to looking towards the internet for style inspiration. As lockdown has accelerated the digitalisation of the fashion industry, we can only expect to see this trend increase.
