Be The Match and William G. Pomeroy Foundation Announce $500k Gift and Matching Campaign – PR Newswire

The Foundation's donation and fundraising efforts will help diversify the Be The Match Registry

MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 13, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- In support of enhanced accessibility to life-saving stem cell transplants through the Be The Match Registry, the William G. Pomeroy Foundation has made a $500,000 grant to Be The Match that will further the organization's partnerships at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

"Patients are most likely to match a donor of their own ethnic background," said Bill Pomeroy

The $500,000 gift will enable Be The Match to grow its partnerships at HBCUs with focused recruitment efforts, education, awareness and internship opportunities for students; all in pursuit of increased stem cell transplant accessibility for Black and African American patients. Six new campus partnerships have already been established as a result of this gift.

"This generous gift from the Pomeroy Foundation is going to have a lasting impact on our ability to reach Black and African American communities and will make a difference for diverse patients in need of a donor," said Amy Ronneberg, Chief Executive Officer of Be The Match.

In addition, the Pomeroy Foundation donation sponsors a gift matching campaign that will help to diversify the donor registry. The matching opportunity coincides with this year's observance of World Marrow Donor Day on Saturday, Sept. 17. Donations to Be The Match throughout the month of September will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $500,000. Visit this link to donate and have your gift matched. The doubled donation will give patients a greater chance of finding a match and a second chance at life.

"Patients are most likely to match a donor of their own ethnic background," said Bill Pomeroy, Founder and Trustee of the Pomeroy Foundation. "Improving the ethnic diversity of the registry improves all patients' odds of finding a life-saving match."

Currently, the chance of having a matched, available donor on the registry ranges from 29-79%, with people of color less likely to find a match because fewer potential donors with diverse backgrounds are registered.

In 2004, Bill Pomeroy was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia. He received a life-saving transplant from a fully matched donor found on the Be The Match Registry in 2005. Bill's transplant experience served as a catalyst for the creation of the Pomeroy Foundation, which works closely with Be The Match to expand recruitment efforts, especially for ethnically diverse donors. Bill is Trustee Emeritus for the Be The Match Foundation.

Tyrese Maxey Lauds LeBron James, Serena Williams, And Tom Brady For Their Longevity: "What Is In The Water Bron, Serena, And TB12…

Longevity is an important aspect and factor when it comes to evaluating all-time athletes in any sport. The ability to maintain one's greatness is important, as it shows that someone can be a winning player over a period of time rather than having a short peak and a worse overall career.

There are a lot of legends playing professional sports currently that have elite longevity. Tom Brady is still a good quarterback in the NFL, Serena Williams has recently moved on to the third round of the 2022 US Open after upsetting her opponent, while LeBron James is still a superstar in the NBA. We are witnessing greatness all around.

Recently, Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey offered some praise for LeBron James, Serena Williams, and Tom Brady and their longevity. He jokingly asked about what is "in the water" that those three athletes are drinking, and it's clear that Maxey is amazed atwhat those legendary stars have been able to accomplish.

What is in the water Bron, Serena, and TB12 drinking!? At this point Im just curious!

There is no doubt that those athletes have had long and productive careers and will retire as legends of their respective sports. Most NBA fans know that LeBron James' longevity in the sport is absolutely unprecedented. Once, former player Eddie Johnson pointed out that players such as Magic Johnson and Larry Bird were "no longer relevant" by the time they were LeBron James' age, and noted that this "lets you know how great" James actually is.

Its amazing how LeBron at almost 37 is still being ripped for struggling, when he has an AD in his prime and not living up to expectations. Magic, Bird, Duncan, Hakeem, and Jordan were no longer relevant at 37. That lets you know how great LBJ is. Keep it moving."

Hopefully, we see LeBron James have another good year with the Los Angeles Lakers next year. While the team missed out on the playoffs this past season, they have revamped their roster, and perhaps that will lead to a different outcome for the next year.

As for Tyrese Maxey, he will likely be focused on trying to win a championship with the Philadelphia 76ers. Many expect him to become the third star of the franchise behind James Harden and Joel Embiid, and he definitely has the talent to do so.

Tennis Icon Serena Williams and MLB Legend Albert Pujols Pull Off Shockingly Craziest Stat to Prove Their Unreal Longevity in Sports -…

Some things happen only in sports. Some statistics are so wild sometimes that they are hard to believe. Just like Tennis icon Serena Williams and baseball legend Albert Pujols managed to pull off some stats that might seem crazy.

From 1995 to 2022, the tennis legend broke many records. In the span of 27 years, she has seen the next generation come and play as well. It is the same with the Cardinals hitter Albert Pujols, whos been in the game since April 2001.

Two days ago, Williams won a title, and Pujols hit a homer, and the stats of that day, August 29 itself, show their long-lasting and successful careers in their respective games.

August 29, 2001, was the day when the tennis icon won the US Open, and same day 21 years later, she won another US Open. On that day in 2001, baseball player Albert Pujols hit a home run for his team. Twenty-one years later, on the same day, it happened again.

What shows the longevity of both their careers is that on that day in 2001, baseball players Vlad Guerrero Sr, Craig Biggio & Dante Bichette recorded a hit. But these three players were not the ones who had something to do on this Monday.

Their kids, who play the same game their fathers played, Vlad Guerrero Jr, Cavan Biggio & Bo Bichette, recorded a hit on the same day their fathers did. It was the samedaywhen icons Serena Williams and Albert Pujols won US Open and hit a homer, respectively.

The younger Williams sister is yet to use the word retire. But she has said that she is evolving away from the game to focus more on the family. And also on the business that she is a part of.

It is not clear when it is going to happen, but it is inevitable. Whenever the news comes of the same, it would still have a massive impact on the tennis and sports world. Accepting that the legend will not play the game professionally anymore will be hard to accept.

Akintola Williams clocks 103, reveals secrets of longevity – P.M. News

Pa Akintola Williams, the foremost Chartered Accountant in Nigeria, turns 103 today, 9 August 2022. He was born on 9 August 1919. That was after the end of World War 1.

In a past interview, he revealed the secrets of his long life:

The secret of my longevity is moderation. In everything I do, I strive to be moderate, and I mean moderate, a little of this and a little of that not too much. Whether it is what you eat, what you drink, or whatever you do, just be moderate and you will live a refreshing, strong, and fulfilling life.

When you are excessive in your daily life activities, you lose a life and its fantastic quality. But when you keep it moderate, you will not only be in control but enjoy life abundantly.

Also, you have to endeavor to live a simple life, avoid controversies, conflicts, over-ambition, just live a simple life and life will be your friend.

Please always take enough rest. I always observe my siesta, sleep about eight hours every day, and generally have enough rest. Your body is your priceless possession, so, please do not abuse it, for if you do, you will lose it.

And please, do not play with exercise mental, physical, and spiritual. The three go hand in hand. I still do my studies and attend to professional matters referred to me.

For once you stop exercising your brain, you die literally. I keep fit and I do not live a sedentary life.

Pa Akintola Williams who granted this interview to Vanguard in 2011 when he turned 92 was the first Nigerian to qualify as a chartered accountant.

He began his education at Olowogbowo Methodist Primary School, Bankole street, Apongbon, Lagos Island, Lagos, in the early 1930s; the same primary school his late junior brother Chief Rotimi Williams attended. His youngest brother Rev James Kehinde Williams was a pastor in the same church. Olowogbowo Methodist Church.

According to his biographers, his firm was founded in 1952, and later grew organically and through mergers to become the largest professional services firm in Nigeria by 2004. Williams participated in founding the Nigerian Stock Exchange and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria. During their long career, he has received many honours.

According to Tom G. Forrest in the essay, The advance of African capital: the growth of Nigerian private enterprise, published in the book, International African Institute (1994), Akintola Williams grandfather, Z. A. Williams, was a merchant prince from Abeokuta and his father Thomas Ekundayo Williams was a clerk in the colonial service who set up a legal practice in Lagos after training in London, England. Akintola was the older brother of Frederick Rotimi Williams, who later became a distinguished lawyer, and the late Rev. James Kehinde Williams, a Christian minister.

After his elementary studies at Olowogbowo Methodist Primary School, Lagos, Williams then attended the CMS Grammar School, Lagos. He went on to Yaba Higher College on a UAC scholarship, obtaining a diploma in commerce. In 1944, he travelled to England where he studied at the University of London. Studying Banking and Finance, he graduated in 1946 with a Bachelor of Commerce. He continued his studies and qualified as a chartered accountant in England in 1949.

According to Richard L. Sklar (2004), in the book, Nigerian Political Parties: Power in an Emergent African Nation, Williams was one of the founders of the Egbe Omo Oduduwa society while in London, with Dr Oni Akerele as president and Chief Obafemi Awolowo as Secretary.

Williams played a leading role in establishing the Association of Accountants in Nigeria in 1960 with the goal of training accountants. He was the first President of the association. He was a founding member and first president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria. He was also involved in establishing the Nigerian Stock Exchange. He remained actively involved with these organizations into his old age.

Public sector positions held by him include Chairman of the Federal Income Tax Appeal Commissioners (195868), member of the Coker Commission of Inquiry into the Statutory Corporations of the former Western Region of Nigeria (1962), member of the board of Trustees of the Commonwealth Foundation (19661975), Chairman of the Lagos State Government Revenue Collection Panel (1973) and Chairman of the Public Service Review Panel to correct the anomalies in the Udoji Salary Review Commission (1975). Other positions include President of the Metropolitan Club in Victoria Island, Lagos, Founder and Council member of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation and Founder and chairman of the board of Trustees of the Musical Society of Nigeria.

In 1982, Williams was honoured by the Nigerian Government with the O.F. R. Following their retirement in 1983, Tom G. Forrest wrote that Williams threw himself into a project to establish a music centre and concert hall for the Music Society of Nigeria. In April 1997, Williams was appointed a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. for services to the accountancy profession and promotion of arts, culture and music through the Musical Society of Nigeria.
