Hormone levels can help predict risk of breast cancer - IN60
From Boston - Blood hormone levels can predict a woman #39;s long term breast cancer risk, according to a report published presented at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) annual meeting. Researchers matched nearly 800 postmenopausal breast cancer patients to healthy controls, and found that women with hormone levels in the highest 25% for estradiol, testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate were 50-107% more likely to develop breast cancer than those in the lowest 25%. From California - Antimicrobial soap can greatly reduce MRSA infections among patients in the intensive care unit, according to a report presented at the IDWeek 2012 conference. Studying nearly 75000 patients from 43 hospitals, researchers found that use of antimicrobial soap and ointment on all ICU patients reduced MRSA infections by 44%. From London - Antidepressants may raise risk of stroke, according to a report published in Neurology. In a meta-analysis of 16 studies examining over 500000 individuals, researchers found that those who used of SSRIs were 50% more likely to suffer an intracranial hemorrhage and 40% more likely to suffer an intracerebral hemorrhage--though the overall risk having one of these strokes was still very low.From:insidermedicineViews:0 0ratingsTime:01:36More inScience Technology

Posted: November 7, 2012 at 4:49 pm

Hormone therapy reduces Alzheimer #39;s risk in women
From Baltimore - Research published in Neurology finds that hormone therapy may reduce risk of Alzheimer #39;s disease in women. Studying nearly 1800 elderly women for 11 years, researchers found that those who began hormone therapy within 5 years of menopause had a 30% reduced risk of Alzhiemer #39;s disease when compared to those who did not use the therapy. From Pennsylvania - Partial sleep deprivation may be associated with obesity, according to a report published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Results of a meta-analysis examining studies from 1996-2011 found that sleep deprivation causes changes in hormone levels that promote hunger. From Chicago - New guidelines could mean millions of Americans will no longer need vitamin D supplementation, according to a report published in PLoS ONE. Based on data from nearly 1000 studies, the Institute of Medicine lowered the amount of vitamin D considered to be sufficient from 30 ng/ml or above to 20 ng/ml or above. The change means that nearly 80 million adults would no longer be considered vitamin D insufficient and would no longer have to take supplements.From:insidermedicineViews:1 1ratingsTime:01:27More inScience Technology
