Alumni Profile: Joseph Anderson, USAF Surgeon
Pre-Medical Society #39;s Outstanding Service Award in Medicine Award -- Joseph Anderson currently serves as the Air Force Reserve #39;s Command Surgeon stationed at Robins AFB. He oversees the medical care provided by 6000 medical personnel to more than 60000 Reservists. The Air Force Reserve provides over 60 percent of the aeromedical evacuation capability of the Department of Defense. Formerly, Anderson was assigned to the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon to develop new pre-deployment training for medical embedded teams. He has extensive experience in health systems development in international peacetime and combat areas having served in Afghanistan and as commander of the 30th Medical Group at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Anderson majored in biochemistry at the College of Charleston and was a member of the swim team and Alpha Phi Omega. He received his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and a master #39;s degree in public health from Harvard. Anderson is board-certified in family medicine and aerospace medicine. The Anderson family has strong College of Charleston roots. Joe #39;s parents are Jim Anderson #39;55 and Carolyn Nesbitt Anderson #39;70. His brother, Philip Anderson, graduated in 1981 and Joe met his wife, Regina, while both were students at the College. They now have a daughter, Kathleen, who is a College of Charleston student. Hopefully, their son, Ben, will also choose the College in a few years.From:CollegeofCharlestonViews:1 0ratingsTime:01:33More inScience Technology

The Toxicology Of Carbon Nanotubes – Video

The Toxicology Of Carbon Nanotubes
ll4.me The Toxicology Of Carbon Nanotubes The widespread and increasing use of carbon nanotubes in scientific and engineering research and their incorporation into manufactured goods has urged an assessment of the risks and hazards associated with exposure to them. The field of nanotoxicology studies the toxicology of nanoparticles such as carbon nanotubes and has become a major growth area aimed towards risk assessment of nanoparticles. Compiled by a team of leading experts at the forefront of research, this is the first book dedicated to the toxicology of carbon nanotubes. It provides state-of-the-science information on how and why they are so potentially dangerous if breathed in, including their similarities to asbestos. The book examines various aspects of carbon nanotubes, from their manufacture and aerodynamic behaviour to their effects at molecular level in the lungs. It is invaluable to the many groups involved with research in this area, as well as to regulators and risk assessors. Students launch new social network for pets

Two animal-loving PhD students from Massey University have launched a new social network for pets. Called Petsnearby, the website grew out of conversations the duo had while working long hours in the labs at the Universitys Institute of Natural Sciences.

Mack Saraswat, a biochemistry PhD candidate, and fellow student Ralph Grand, who is working towards a PhD in genetics, found they shared a love of animals.

"I think we were just talking and we discovered we both loved animals," says Mr Saraswat. "I had a pet cat, Ralph has a pet cat, and we wanted to create something cool, something that would connect people through their pets."

Three others were brought on board to help turn the idea into a reality: another lab member, German physicist Lutz Gehlen; Indian businessman Sharif Zamir; and Mr Grands brother, Remo Grand, a designer and website developer. The start-up company was also assisted by the ecentre, Massey Universitys onsite business incubator.

The website is unique in that it is both a social network and a comprehensive database of services, including Council-approved dog parks, veterinary clinics and pet stores throughout New Zealand. There are plans to include pet-friendly cafes and hotels, as well as breeders, and health and fitness services in the future.

While the database information can be publicly accessed, those who create an account can use geo-location to find pet services in their area, or other like-minded pet owners to converse with, or even meet up with. Another unique feature is the ability to have more than one pet per account.

"The pet owner has the account, but they can add multiple pets - all other sites we know of require you to create a completely new profile for every pet," explains Mr Grand. "Whats really different about Petsnearby, though, is the interaction can be between the pets, or between the account owners. Two dogs can have a conversation about meeting up for a play date, or the owners can talk to each other directly."

He says that part of the sites attraction for users is the possibility "you can find a date for your dog, and potentially for yourself".

While PhD studies in genetics and biochemistry seem a world away from pets socialising online, Mr Saraswat says the data analysis skills have been extremely handy while developing the Petsnearby website.

"Were used to dealing with a lot of statistics and we have a physicist on the team who can come up with cool algorithms. As a group we like to meet, throw ideas around, and solve them mathematically," he says.
