Grey’s Anatomy: 10 Relationships That Should Have Happened But Never Did – Screen Rant

There are many iconic and memorable romances on Grey's Anatomy. However, have fans ever thought that a character was better suited with someone else?

The popular primetime medical drama Grey's Anatomy has been around for what seems like an eternity now. The show has, over the years, given fansa gamut of human emotions with a barrageof relatable characters, navigating a complex range of relationships.

From couples that make no sense, like Jackson Avery and Maggie Pierce, to those that are absolutely adorable together such as Callie and Arizona, Jackson and April, and of course, Derek and Meredith, relationships on Grey'shave been an integral part of the show's astounding success and record run.

FHowever, do fans ever feel like there is often great chemistry between other characters that largely goes unexplored? Could these relationships have become the show's greatest romance ever? Here are some great contenders that unfortunately never happened.

Owen Hunt joined the hit medical drama early on and was introduced as Cristina Yang's love interest. Upon first impression, Owen seemed like the perfect match for Cristina as they both shared the same passion for medicine and their work.

However, over the years Owen's storyline went haywire, as he went from one woman to another, first cheating on Cristina, then hurriedly married Amelia, and getting Teddy pregnant by appearing at her door out of nowhere. Even at present, his relationship with Teddy is on the rocks with the latter having cheated on him. Owen might be a Grey's veteran but one wonders if, after Cristina, he might have beenbetter off alone. At least for a little while or until he figures things out.

Erica Hahn was the brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon who came like a gush of wind after Preston Burke left Seattle Grace and then left as hurriedly as she came.

However, in that brief period of time, she was shown to have developed a relationship with fan-favorite, Callie Torres. For both of them, a casual hook up turned out to be an eye-opener for the two women as Erica realized that she was happier dating women and Callie started exploring her bisexuality. Erica and Callie's story ended abruptly but it would have been interesting to watch them navigate their new-found sexuality together.

The 'Ortho god' Atticus Lincoln seems to be in a stable relationship with Amelia Shepherd at the moment although knowing Amelia, things could blow up at any moment.

But Link also sharesa pleasant, friendly equation with Jo Wilson, who he happened to know in the past. And seeing how things turned out between Jo and Alex, maybe Link would have been a better option, for he seems more anchored and understanding than Alex ever was. However, given that this is Grey's, there might be hope for Link and Jo still.

Another couple that seemed to be on the verge of happening but never culminated was Alex and Addison. For those who forgot, it was Addison who tried to mellow down the arrogant surgical intern in his early days and drew Alexinto pediatrics, which heultimately excelled.

The two were attracted to each other and sparks flew, which led to the couple hooking up. Of course, Alex was way too immature to be in a serious relationship with someone like Addison but that in itself would have been fun to watch. Addison'spartnership with Derek, although complicated, was never meant to be, so maybe she could have been in a quirky relationship with the smartmouth Alex Karev.

Mark and Callie were best friends with benefits and Callie even got pregnant with Mark's daughter. The two were very comfortable with each other and their camaraderie was mostly uncomplicated and fun.

As always, life and relationships are complex in Grey's Anatomy. So the two people who were best fit for each other don't end up together. Still, if Callie had decided she wanted to start a relationship with Mark, fans wouldn't have complained.

In season 4, young Lexie Grey encountered a patient with a giant tumor in his carotid artery, Nick Hanscom. Nick had a sense of humor, was flirtatious, and soon struck up a bond with Lexie who seemed to enjoy talking to him.

RELATED:Grey's Anatomy: 10 Couples That Shouldn't Have Worked, But Did

In fact, there were definite signs of chemistry between the two. After all, Lexie was soft by nature and Nick was the kind of guy who could make light of a very serious situation. Hewas also the first patient Lexie was entrusted with and his tragic death hit her hard. Had Nick survived, the writers might have considered giving the two a chance.

Grey's Anatomy is as much about the patients as it is about the doctors and staff at Grey Sloan Memorial. Meredith has saved numerous lives in the course of seventeen long seasons, but very few patients have dared to flirt with her.

One such patient was Nick Marsh in season 14, a handsome transplant doctor who had just undergone a kidney transplant himself. He might not have been 'McDreamy' but he was quite charming in his own way and was clearly hitting on Meredith, who didn't seem to mind the interest. Meredith and Nick would have made a really cute couple together, but that never happened.

Meredith went on a blind date in season 15 after her matchmaker patient, Cece, convinced her to start going out again. And who should she meet butHow I Met Your Motheralum, JoshRadnor, who appeared as software engineer Jon here.

The two connected instantly and Meredith even seemed okay with giving Jon a chance, canceling her afternoon to spend time with her date. However, once Jon mentioned that he wasn't comfortable with single moms, this ended her interest in him. Although the writers didn't take the narrative further, fans adored Jon with Meredith and wouldn't mind seeing him make a comeback.

Actor Martin Henderson appeared in season 14 as Nathan Riggs, an ex-colleague and former friend of Owen's and a potential love interest for Meredith Grey.

RELATED:Grey's Anatomy 10 Famous Actors You Forgot Were In The Series

Nathan seemed like a fitting replacement for Derek Shepherd although Meredith didn't give him a chance at first. And by the time she did, Nathan's ex-fiance Megan was back in the picture. Meredith and Nathan only had a few moments together but it wouldhave been fun to see them as a couple.

Remember the adorable George O'Malley, who died a devastating death in season 5 after throwing himself in front of a bus to save a random stranger? For those who don't remember, Lexie Grey had a phase when she was infatuated by George right after she joined Seattle Grace as a surgical intern.

The two even became roommates for some time, with Lexie trying to draw George's attention with her kind and thoughtful ways. But George's storyline had already become chaotic by the time and for some reason, he never noticed Lexie. Could one have imagined how sweet this pairing would have been ifGeorge had recognized how great Lexiewas?Unfortunately, fans never got to see them together.

Grey’s Anatomy: 5 Characters Who Give The Best Romance Advice (& 5 Who Give The Worst) – Screen Rant

They may be great at fixing breaks and bones but not all of the surgeons at Grey Sloan should be trusted to give out relationship advice.

For 17 seasons, the strong cast of Grey's Anatomy has helped patients through broken legs, arms, gunshots, and more. But what they've had trouble with is their own personal lives. Not one character on the show can honestly saythey have had smooth sailing in the relationship department.

RELATED:Grey's Anatomy: Each Role The Main Characters Could Play In Another TV Drama

While Grey's has captured the hearts of fans with marriages, one-night stands, and budding romances, they also have their fair share of divorces, affairs, and scandals. With that said, who on the show can you go to for sound relationship advice?

Meredith Grey lost the love of her life and was thrown for a loop. With one accident, everything in her life changed. Meredith went from a wife to a widow and to a single mom in just a matter of moments. She and Derek were positioned to be the perfect couple on Grey's Anatomy and then Derek was gone.

What Meredith is saying here is that if you love someone, tell them. There is no such thing as forever in this life. One day they are here and the next, they are gone.

Owen is that character that fans want to root for but he just makes it hard sometimes to do that. His heart could be in the right place but his emotions are scattered all over Seattle. With Cristina, it appeared they were the perfect fit until Owen wanted to create a family. It was the same with Owen and Amelia.

What Owen is saying here is that he's in love and that she's the love of his life. Not bad advice but isn't this recycled, especially for Owen? He still hasn't found that true love but telling every woman that is not the way to go.

As awful as Jackson Avery has been in relationships, it's not to say that he hasn't been in love. Despite his issues with April Kepner and others, Jackson has put his heart on the line a few times for love. His relationship with April is still viewed as one of the best ever on the show but he has other skeletons in his closet.

RELATED:Grey's Anatomy: The 5 Most (& 5 Least) Realistic Storylines

What Jackson is saying here is that despite the flaws in a person, he still loves them. This is what love is all about. It's more than just loving the good in a person, one always must take them with their flaws.

Cristina Yang, during her time on Grey's Anatomy, was all business. Yes, she did have time for some extracurricular activity but still fell short in that department with two failed marriages. She and Preston Burke appeared to be soulmates but careers got in the way. Still, she was Meredith's person and what was supposed to be solid advice, just came out wrong.

What Yang is saying here is that you should shine no matter who your partner is. Well, in a union, it should be both of you. Cristina's point of view is more individual-based than what a true partnership should be like. Bad advice.

In his early stages before Jo Wilson, Alex Karev was still wandering around the hospital and in his personal life searching for meaning. While he and Izzie Stevens didn't work out on their first try, Karev meant his words.

What Karev is saying here is that he now has more than himself to worry about. He's was entering an equal partnership, where he agreed to care and protect someone other than himself. For a character like Karev, this was a huge step as his background was a bit shaky in regards to his upbringing.

Callie Torres is missed. Her character development over the seasons was great to watch from living in the basement of the hospital to becoming a top surgeon, a mother, and then a wife. But her skeletons were just too much to bear by the end. She made her fair share of mistakes relationship-wise but in the end, she made the right decision.

RELATED:Grey's Anatomy: 10 People Callie Should Have Ended Up With (Other Than Arizona)

What Callie is saying here is that she has no time for games. If you aren't ready to be with that person, then do not waste their time chasing them. For viewers, this may hold true, but coming from Callie it was hard to swallow with all the games she played.

Talk about a character who got the wrong end of the stick in the romance department. Stephanie Edwards finally got her chance with Jackson Avery and he disrespected her in one of the worst ways imaginable. Was she perfect? No.

What Edwards is saying here is that the person you are involved with must have their baggage in check. Life is too short to bring that and then unload it on a person who does not deserve it. She has lived it and speaks from the heart.

Arizona Robbins earned her stripes on the show for her grit, her smile, pain, and perseverance. However, Arizona was not perfect. Her relationship with Callie was filled with love but also anger. Once she lost her leg, it took Arizona a while to get back to the beautiful soul fans fell in love with.

What Arizona is saying here is that you should fight for what you want, even if you're the one making the mistakes. Considering she was the one who cheated on Callie, this is another hard pill to swallow.

Mark Sloan entered Grey's Anatomy as the new eye candy for fans and the other female surgeons at the hospital. Once the best friend of Derek Shepherd, their relationship went sour once Sloan slept with Derek's wife. There were rough times for him until he met the woman of his dreams in Lexie Grey.

What Sloan is saying here is to go for what your heart wants. With Lexie, he knew it was wrong but he nor she didn't care. They were in love. Mark made his mistakes, but his love for Lexie was real.

Richard Webber is a master when it comes to teaching. He's a great leader but his personal life is not one that anyone should want to follow. Webber has cheated on his wife, had a child come out of that affair, and almost let another marriage slip away.

What Webber is saying here is that it's okay to be scared to lose things that you care deeply for. Great advice but coming from a man who still has not found a way to grow closer to his daughter and cheats on his wife, this is not the best advice.

Grey’s Anatomy: The 5 Most (& 5 Least) Realistic Storylines – Screen Rant

While much of the doctors' lives are realistic on Grey's Anatomy, this medical drama has a ton of over-the-top plotlines taking place in the hospital.

Fans ofGrey's Anatomyinvest in the relationships and personal problems that the main characters deal with in each episode, but the series is definitely known for its wild and surprising episodes. While the hospital setting is realistic in some ways, as the doctors do work long hours, care about their patients, and try to innovate, heal, and save, there are some things that seem a little over the top.

Fromthe confusing Jackson/April romanceto some of the season finales, there are some parts ofGrey's Anatomy that don't always add up. While many plotlines make sense, others don't seem like they could occur IRL.

Meredith doesn't know that Derek has a wife when they first start seeing each other in season 1. But that's not her main problem with their budding relationship.

Meredithwants to hide the fact that they're together as she doesn't want the others at the hospital to think anything problematic is going on. Even though they're both adults and it would probably be fine, it makes sense that Meredith would have those feelings, as she cares about her career andshe wants to be respected as a doctor.

The second season episodes "It's the End of the World" and "As We Know It" are famous toGrey's Anatomyfans, as this storyline involves a patient with a bomb in their chest.

Fans enjoyed watching these episodes as they featured Kyle Chandler, the beloved actor known for playing Coach Taylor on Friday Night Lights, a moving show in its own right. But despitehow juicy and entertaining this storyline is, it doesn't feel realistic. Instead, it feels very over-the-top and intense.

Owen and Cristina have a long-term romance that is pretty heartbreaking to watch. They really love each other but have many obstacles to cross, from Owen's PTSD to the fact that he wants to start a family and she doesn't want children.

RELATED:Grey's Anatomy: Meredith's 10 Most Emotional Quotes, Ranked

The fact thatthe trauma and tragedy that Owen has seen in the past affects his current love life is very realistic. This happens to so many people, and it's never a short and easy road to recovery.Even if viewers haven't had this exact same experience, this is something everyone can sympathize with.

At the end of season 12, Alex punches DeLuca and hurts himvery badly, as he thinks that something is going on between DeLuca and Jo.

Alex is more sensitive than fans originally think and so it doesn't make much sense for him to put his career and life at risk like this. He has grown up a lot and isn't one to jump to conclusions anymore, so it seems odd that he would get so angry without even knowing the true story. This isn't a very realistic storyline and even veers into melodrama.

Losing a child is devastating and it can also take its toll on a marriage. It makes a lot of sense that Jackson and April's relationship would become strained after they lose their baby Samuel, and it's not something that they can get past and move on from so easily.

While there are many melodramatic moments onGrey's Anatomy, especially involving the main couples, this is one that paints a logical picture of what could really happen in a situation like this.

After meeting him because he's a patient at the hospital, Izzie falls for Denny and then watches him die. She even thinks that she's becoming intimate with his ghost. This will forever be known as one of the wildest things to happen onGrey's Anatomy.

RELATED:Grey's Anatomy: 10 Most Memorable Patients, Ranked By Likability

While this love story could be viewed as sweeping and epic, this is definitely an unrealistic storyline. It's hard to picture another character on the show believing this, and while Izzie is grieving and having a difficult time, it's just not possible for this to really happen.

Meredith has a tragic life, no doubt about it, and things get even worse for her in the 17th and current season when she gets COVID-19.

In a recent episode, Meredith's condition worsens and she is hospitalized. Meredith even thinks that she sees her late husband and love of her life, Derek, and it's a very emotional bunch of episodes. This is definitely one of the more realistic storylines thatGrey's Anatomyhas done, since this is a real battle that many people have faced, and the pandemic has affected everyone around the world in 2020.

When Alex says goodbye toGrey's Anatomyin season 16, he surprises viewers by going to live with Izzie and their twins.

While these two did have a dramatic love story earlier on in the show, it doesn't make much sense for Alex to leave Jo, whom he supposedly loves and even married, for a woman he let go years earlier. It also seems like if Izzie really was raising Alex's kids, wouldn't he have known? Wouldn't viewers have learned about it sooner? Thisfeels like a strange and unrealistic storyline.

There are many characters who could have datedand there are also some people who tried but found that it just wouldn't work out.

Izzie and George are close friends from the start and they try dating, but realize that they're better off staying friends. This is realistic as many people develop crushes on a good friend, classmate, or co-worker, and then it becomes clear that things become too messy once they attempt a romance.

Before leaving the show, Stephanie has a pretty wild storyline: she gets caught in a fire in the season 13 finale "Ring Of Fire."

One of the patients, who turns out to be a rapist, has kidnapped Stephanie and a young girl, and she manages to help the girl get away after he lights the stairwell on fire. One of these storylines would have been enough, but the fact that Stephanie is running away from a rapist, saving a kid, and not dying in a fire? This becomes a super unrealistic episode and it's just too much to take in.

Grey’s Anatomy: 10 Things That Make No Sense About The Patients – Screen Rant

Fans might not realize it, but a lot of the patients' storylines and cases on Grey's Anatomy don't exactly make a lot of sense.

ConsideringGrey's Anatomy has over 350 episodes, it's safe to say that fans believe the writers are doing a good job. From the dynamic characters to the intriguing storylines, the viewers love to tune in to see what their favorite surgeons are getting up to. However, that is not to say that there aren't some things they wouldn't want to change.

RELATED:Grey's Anatomy: 10 Unpopular Opinions (According To Reddit)

Fans might not realize but a lot of the patients' storylines and cases don't exactly make a lot of sense. Sometimes it's because of a writing inconsistency. Sometimes it's because of a continuity error but most of the time it's because of medical inaccuracy. Here are some examples.

Over the last 17 seasons, there have been a lot of characters that have been on death's door. In season 14, fans were surprised to see April's life hang in the balance after she got in an accident, which resulted in her falling into a lake. When April arrived at the hospital, it was revealed that she had no pulse and was hypothermic.

For hours, the viewers saw the doctors take several turns to help keep the circulation going, eventually placing her on bypass. However, what didn't make sense is why they spent hours working on April when she wasn't stable. There have been plenty of episodes where the doctors have called time on a patient after they had been down 20 minutes. Why doesn't the same procedure apply here when April was in a worse condition?

In one of the show's most controversial storylines, the viewers also saw the loyalties between the Grey-Sloan surgeons were divided after it was revealed that Alex had almost beat Deluca to death. Fans were shocked to see the extent of his injuries, especially as Jackson informed everyone that Deluca had suffered a broken nose, a fractured eye socket, and a fractured clavicle.

When fans got a glimpse of Deluca, it was clear that he was going to be out of commission for weeks. However, fans were quite surprised to see him back at work just a couple of days after the attack. Considering the operation he had, was it practical for him to be scrubbing in on surgeries? Surely, the recovery time is usually longer.

Within the last 17 years, fans will also agree that there has been a lot of romances that have had quite an impact on fans. But that's not to say all of them were well-received by fans. A prime example of this being the Denny Duquette saga.

RELATED:10 Biggest (& Best) Romantic Gestures In Grey's Anatomy

The writers made it out to be a tragic love story. However, hindsight has made a few people change their minds. Not only was this relationship unethical and unprofessional, but why would they become engaged when they didn't know anything about each other personally. If Denny really loved Izzie, he would have at least told her about his family life and not allow her to be ambushed by his father.

Another patient storyline that didn't make much sense was the one where a patient watched an adult movie for pain relief. In season 2, Bailey and the interns were taken aback when they discovered that one of their patients was watching an erotic movie on the tv to help with his pain management.

Although he ran into a problem when the power cut out, he managed to find a new form of relief when Cristina decided to tell him a story. However, what fans can't seem to figure out is why he didn't have a back-up plan. Could he not have been more discreet by bringing a portable DVD player? Or an erotic novel? While he didn't deserve to be in pain, it did seem like he was embarrassing his wife. This situation did look like it could have been avoided.

If there was one episode in season 2 that stood out the most, it would have to be the one where there was a bomb threat. Here, the viewers saw Meredith, Cristina, Derek, and Burke put their lives on the line as they worked to extract the bomb out of the patient's abdomen while attempting to keep him alive.

However, what fans can't seem to figure out is how the patient managed to come out of the operation healthy and well. Not only did he spend a few hours being moved from room to room (while his chest was open) but the rocket did explode. In fact, it caused quite a bit of destruction to the corridor and almost killed Meredith. How did Burke manage to keep a steady hand when it went off?

Although season 5 was a fan favorite, most fans will agree that it still had some faults. One plot the viewers couldn't seem to understand is how the writers approached Izzie's tumor. As many fans remember, Izzie began to hallucinate that Denny was alive and began a romantic relationship with him.

RELATED:Grey's Anatomy: 10 Storylines They Completely Ignored

What didn't make sense to fans was why Izzie took so long to figure it out. She recognized that something was wrong but was quite happy to remain oblivious to the problem. She even allowed it to distract her from her work-life. Considering she was a doctor, it seemed irrational and irresponsible to do so. It also felt a little strange that a tumor (with a 5% survival rate) didn't have any long term effects.

Season 8 was also seen to have some very memorable medical cases. There was the miracle of heart-in-the-box, the conjoined twins' separation case, Callie rebuilding a man's hand from scratch, and Derek managing to successfully remove an 'inoperable' tumor. However, no one could forget the woman who had a pet lion.

It's quite apparent where the issue lies in this case. For one, fans didn't understand why and how she kept a lion as a pet. How did none of her neighbors hear it when they were at home? How did she even acquire the feline in the first place? Logically, it made no sense whatsoever.

As many people know, there have been some strange operations that have been dramatic and action-packed. However, there is the odd occasion where the writers have thought too much 'outside of the box.' This could be seen in the season 4 finale when the surgeons were seen working on a teenager who got himself stuck in concrete.

While some fans loved it, some viewers in the medical community found some issues with the plotline. Theystatedthat not onlywould the appliance of vinegar have "caused more burns" but electrolyte abnormalities would be "unlikely." If this is true then the writers may have to improve their researching skills.

During the early stages of the chief resident race, fans saw Sydney Heron and Bailey square off and fight for control in the clinic. Since Sydney and Bailey were concentrating too much on their rivalry, they almost discharged a patient who had spinal fluid leaking out of his nose.

In this instance, what didn't make sense was the patient's background history. If this was his fourth time returning to the clinic, why had the doctors attempted to brush him off again? All previous treatment hadn't worked so why didn't they order the extensive tests the second time he came?

Another bizarre case that fans would never forget was the one where a patient fell 12,000ft and survived. In season 4, the surgeons were all shocked to discover the patient alive and well after the EMTs revealed he had been in a bad skydiving accident.

Along with the rest of the fans, the surgeons were even more surprised to discover that Rick had managed to walk away with no serious injuries. He only needed an appendectomy. However, this was where the problem lay. There was no way that he would have no internal injuries or damaged organs. His head and back would have definitely taken some damage.

Why ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Camilla Luddington Found This Episode So Difficult to Film: ‘I Was Just Shaking and Crying’ – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Greys Anatomyfans are eagerly awaiting the premiere of Season 17. The character of Dr. Jo Karev, portrayed by Camilla Luddington, has gone through many ups and downs on the show. Most recently, her husband and longtime love Dr. Alex Karev (played by Justin Chambers) just left her for his former flame Izzie Stevens.

Luddington has played out several dramatic storylines over the years, with one particular episode bringing on a myriad of emotions.

The British actress debuted on Greys in 2012. With her characters backstory including abandonment at a fire station at birth and being in foster homes and also homeless at times, Luddington has learned to master portraying Jo. Last year, the Greys star came up with an idea to add to Jos history and emailed show runner Krista Vernoff.

Maybe this is crazy, but what if we do a story about consent and have Jo be the product of rape,' Luddington recalled in April 2019 to Zimbio of emailing Vernoff. I didnt know what she was thinking at the timeorif shed already gone into the writers room the day before but said, We need to do an episode about consent. Krista wrote back to me immediately and said shewas onboard with the idea.

Luddington knew shed have her work cut out for her on the traumatic plot. I have to say that once we started filming the episode, thats when it really sunk in, she admitted. I kept wondering how Jo was going to overcome this tragedy, but the idea itself came together like it was kismet.

RELATED: Why Greys Anatomys Camilla Luddington Says Her First Scene With Ellen Pompeo Was Legitimately Terrible

Airing on March 28, 2019, the episode entitled Silent All These Years named for a Tori Amos song involved two storylines which melded together. One highlights Jo discovery that she was a product of rape, which is why her mother abandoned her. In the other plot, a patient named Abby (portrayed by Khalilah Joi) arrives at Grey Sloan and is seen by Jo, who finds out Abby was sexually assaulted after leaving a bar.

Being a victim of domestic abuse from her former husband, Jo identifies with the patient. She reminds Jo of herself, especially when Abby says that she hit her head on the cabinet, Luddington told Zimbio. Jo knows instantly thats not true and that someone hurt her. I think Jo can relate to the situation because she sees herself in Abby.

In the episode, Jo teams up with Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) to help Abby through the trauma. While Abby is afraid to report the assault to the police or her husband, she eventually agrees to provide evidence for a rape kit.

One of the episodes most groundbreaking scenes is when, after Abby reveals she is now afraid of all men, the women of Grey Sloan line the hallways to prevent any men from entering as they wheel Abby down the corridor. It felt like I was part of a warrior sisterhood, Luddington said of the scene which they called the Wall of Women.

NBC News reported that a study revealed the episode on consent and sexual assault led to an increase in hotline calls after it aired.

The content of Silent All These Years was the most traumatic Luddington had experienced while on the show.

There really wasnt a day of filming that wasnt difficult, to be honest, the Greys star shared. Shooting scenes about the rape kits were really intense and I had no idea what happens next after you say yes to administering one. I also remember readingthe Wall of Women scene, and I was just shaking and crying. Doing it was so emotional.

Luddington revealed that all who worked on Greys wanted to to show their support of the subject matter and its message.

The this is the first timeIve worked on an episode where everybody from production to editing wanted to be a part of a scene, she said. So, what you see in that hallway isnt just our normal background of female actors. This scene also includes women from all different areas of our production. Thats how much they believed in and wanted to be a part of this iconic moment on the show. So, that day was especially hard to shoot.

Greys Anatomys episode truly broke barriers when it aired Silent All These Years.

Grey’s Anatomy: 5 Things That Changed After The Pilot (& 5 That Stayed The Same) – Screen Rant

Some TV series do not survive the pilot, certain ones only last for one season, and others extend over time, managing to captivate the audience over and over again. Grey's Anatomy is one of the longest-running television shows in history due to its success with audiences. Since the pilot, a lot has happened in this hospital.

RELATED: Which Grey's Anatomy Character Are You Based On Your Zodiac Type

Changes in the series have been made after the pilot or been presented over time during the seasons. Afterfifteen years and sixteen seasons, Grey's Anatomy retains many aspects of its essence, but it has also seen many transformations in its history, which have allowed viewers to remain hooked on the plot.

One of the best relationships in the whole series is the one between Cristina and Meredith. After Sandra Oh leaves the show, Meredith continues to talk to her occasionally on the phone. Since the pilot, the two women bonded and there was no rivalry whatsoever, even though, at times, there was tension and fights between them.

The great depth of their friendship has allowed the relationship to survive many things without problem, such as distance. They never apologize for who they are, they created an instant bond, they have the right closeness for the kind of person they are and they love to dance to de-stress and just be happy. When Cristina left, Meredith had to find another friend to be her "person" and she chose Alex to take the place, but as Alex Karev himself said, Meredith doesn't need anyone, she is her own person, but they will always continue to be friends.

Most interns at Grey's Anatomy begin with excitement and fear, Meredith was no different. Being the daughter of a famous surgeon didn't give her confidence from the start, it probably played against her. As she says in the pilot, her mother tried to dissuade her from studying medicine, because for Ellis Grey, Meredith didn't have what it took to be a surgeon.

Meredith is lost in the pilot, she highlights it from the first voice-over to the end. She doesn't have a good reason to be a doctor, but she has plenty of reason not to quit, so she continues. Her perseverance helped her to know that she had what it takes to succeed as a great doctor. The confidence she gained after every case, until she became one of the most respected surgeons in the country.

Grey's Anatomy is characterized by the voice-overs at the beginning of the show and at the end, this aspect has been maintained since the pilot "A Hard Day's Night." This detail makes the episodes closer to the viewer, in order to make them more empathetic with Meredith and her friends.

The narration is always present, but it wasn't originally thought of that way. The choice was made by Shonda Rhimes when she noticed something was missing. It was a good decision that gave meaning to much that happened on the screen, through thoughtful monologues.

Alex Karev is one of the most beloved characters in the series, as well as one of the most visible on screen (16 seasons), but this role was a last-minute decision. After filming the pilot, the producers wanted to have an additional male character to serve as an antagonist, so Justin Chambers was added in post-production for some scenes.

In the second episode Alex starts to be more important for the story and also becomes part of Miranda Bailey's team of interns, after he is reassigned from Jeremy's group. These changes had to be made after the pilot to make sense of his entry into the group of the five friends. In addition, the character evolves from being the abusive one to one of the closest to his friends and patients.

Meredith's house has appeared since the pilot, and almost every Grey's Anatomy doctor has passed through it, not only during meetings but also living there. Although in the first scene of the pilot Meredith tells Derek that she will sell the house, she finally explains to her mother that she decided to stay and rent the additional rooms.

The first ones to live in it were Izzie and George, but also at some point in the story it was inhabited by Callie, Alex, Derek, Jo, Lexie, Cristina, April, Jackson, Arizona, among others. When Derek and Meredith moved into their dream house, she sold it to Alex, but when Derek died Meredith bought it back. Since then, she has lived there with her children and her sisters Maggie and Amelia. So, the house has always been an important part of the story and has brought them all together.

Miranda Bailey was known at first as the Nazi, for her strong character and the way she treated the interns, which was terrifying for the new ones. She wasn't around to play games and had a clear goal to pursue no matter what.

Although Miranda retained that determination to fulfill all her ambitions, she grew with her character. Dr. Bailey became a guide for her students and a friend to those who survived the early stages of their work as doctors.

They couldn't do a series on medicine without death. Not all patients could be saved, even though these people are among the best doctors in the country. From the pilot, they wanted to show the fragility of human life.

But at Grey's Anatomy, death is not only a matter of patients, it is also very present within the medical staff, where tragic accidents and illnesses have made part of the cast change constantly. George O'Malley makes a kind of prediction during the pilot, he asks Meredith if they will survive, and although he refers to the period as interns, the phrase is key to predicting his future and that of many others.

During the pilot it is mentioned that there are twenty interns starting on the same day as Meredith and six of them are women. During this first episode it is seen how they are organized in groups of four and five, while they wait in the changing room, they are also present in the gallery during O'Malley's first operation and at lunch time.

Although there are a lot of interns (extras) in the pilot, they did not continue their appearances. The exclusion of the rest of the interns makes the spectators forget about the fact that more actors played this role and concentrate only on Cristina, Meredith, Izzie, George and Alex.

For Grey's Anatomy it is important to show the maximum veracity during the high number of medical scenes that are done in the show, for this, they have medical advisors that guarantee that the terms used are the correct ones and that the procedures are being done in the right way.

These aspects have not become more flexible over time, because although the writers and actors know more about medicine (after 15 years) than any other media worker, they are not doctors.

Many television series don't maintain all the actors they had from the beginning and Grey's Anatomy is characterized by renewing the cast quite often, keeping only a few. Also, it is very difficult for the same actors to continue for 15 years.

Of the original cast, only Meredith, Richard Webber and Bailey are still in the picture. The first of the five interns to say goodbye to their role was George, who died after a bus accident. And the last was Alex in season 16, who had a bittersweet exit for fans who wanted to continue watching him on screen.
