Nanogirl, My Quest to Become a Superhero: Michelle Dickinson at TEDxAuckland – Video

Nanogirl, My Quest to Become a Superhero: Michelle Dickinson at TEDxAuckland
Michelle has a PhD in biomedical materials engineering, runs New Zealand #39;s only nanomechanical testing laboratory and is a self-confessed adrenaline junkie. Her passion for both sports and science has enabled her to travel the world on the search for her next adventure or research project. With specialist knowledge in nanotechnology, Michelle has contributed to the development of cutting edge technologies. Secretly, however, Michelle has been working on advancing these developments to help her to achieve her childhood dream of becoming a real life superhero. In her spare time you will usually find her outside kitesurfing, cycling, running, paddle boarding, or inside practicing martial arts. Her recent move to academia from industry was a step towards her goal of inspiring females to push the boundaries in both science and sports, and to encourage environmentally sustainable living through engineering design. AboutTEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)From:TEDxTalksViews:0 0ratingsTime:15:57More inScience Technology

Hecq "Consumed" video by Andreas Wannerstedt – Video

Hecq "Consumed" video by Andreas Wannerstedt
"Consumed" video by Andreas Wannerstedt Track: Hecq "Enceladus" (with Skyence) taken from Hecq #39;s EP "Enceladus" (Ad Noiseam adn149) "Consumed" is another self-initiated personal project that I #39;ve written, designed and animated. It #39;s a 3D short film about a not so distant future, where extreme overpopulation has become a global crises. The population growth has reached a critical tipping point and there #39;s food and water shortages all around the world. The story revolves around a "Food Replicator", or a so called molecular assembler, a device that can rearrange subatomic particles and guide chemical reactions with atomic precision. In an attempt to prevent mass starvation, this device is used to synthesize nutritions with the ability to self-replicate. But during the initial tests something goes wrong and out-of-control self-replicating compounds starts to spread, consuming all matter while building more copies of them selves. This is very similar to a hypothetical end-of-the-world scenario called "Grey goo", a term coined by molecular nanotechnology pioneer Eric Drexler back in 1986. He illustrates exponential growth and the dangers of self-replication is his book "Engines of Creation": "Imagine a replicator floating in a bottle of chemicals, making copies of itself...the first replicator assembles a copy in one thousand seconds, the two replicators then build two more in the next thousand seconds, the four build another four, and the eight build another eight. At the end ...From:adnoiseamViews:13 4ratingsTime:02:40More inMusic

Nanomotoring: Syuzanna Harutyunyan at TEDxHanzeUniversity – Video

Nanomotoring: Syuzanna Harutyunyan at TEDxHanzeUniversity
Syuzanna is currently Assistant Professor in Chemistry at the University of Groningen. Before joining the University of Groningen she carried out research in Armenia, Russia, Poland, and Belgium. Much of her work focuses on studies towards the chemical origin of life, methods for organic chemistry and nanotechnology. She was part of the team that constructed the tiniest ever electrically driven car, which consists of a single molecule. This made it to the cover of Nature magazine (issue of 10 November 2011). http://www.sr-harutyunyan.com In thespirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
