Bah, Humbug – Above the Law

Do we need even one more report on the difficulties that women have staying in the profession? Do we need the ABA to tell us what anyone in the profession with even the teeniest brains knows just by looking around and seeing the attrition of women who boogie out of Biglaw practice? I didnt think we needed one, but I would be wrong. (Not the first time, and certainly not the last.)

Carolyn Elefant, in a post two years ago, wrote about the ABA Initiative to investigate why mid-career women lawyers are leaving Biglaw.

Here we are, two years later, and guess what? No, dont guess. Ill tell you. The ABA report has concluded that men are from Mars, women are from Venus. Did we need the ABA to tell us that?

And if youre not familiar with the book, Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, which was hugely popular in the 1990s (when many of our readers were barely in grammar school), the report nails what the problem is. Indeed, male lawyers are from Mars, and female lawyers are from Venus.

John Grays book asserts that men and women have differing ways of communicating (no surprise there), and so they need to understand those different styles. Grays book also talks about the different emotional needs that men and women have.

The ABA report, entitled Walking Out of the Door, The Facts, Figures and Future of Experienced Women Lawyers in Private Practice, is really nothing new after all the reports weve read over the past decade. The report suggests recommendations that if adopted (notice the use of if) could lead eventually to gender parity in Biglaw. However, I dont think anyone alive today will still be alive to see that transformation unless the cryogenics business really takes off soon.

The report shows a huge disconnect between how male lawyers view aspects of law firm practice and life differently from their female colleagues. Some of the factors where men and women report differing levels of satisfaction include compensation (and how that compensation is determined), opportunities for advancement, workplace gender diversity, and firm leadership.

A few of the disparities in what the report terms everyday building blocks for success:

How many times has a male lawyer been mistaken for a lower-level employee? According to the survey, never, but 82% (!) of women lawyers said that they have been so mistaken. (And dont get me started on how women lawyers are expected to plan parties, pick up refreshments, and other housekeeping duties.)

How many men have experienced a lack of access for opportunities for business development? According to the report, a mere 10%, while 67% of the women lawyers havent had that access. (Gee, another surprise.)

How about some more? Disparities in how committed women are to their careers, the perception of a hostile work environment, denials in salary increases and/or bonuses, being overlooked for promotion opportunities, lack of sponsors, loss of a desirable assignment. The list goes on.

Men and women have significantly differing views on why women choose to stay or go. Three of the biggest reasons for why women walk out the door: work/life balance (and lets stipulate that women have just about all of the responsibilities for both children and aging parents), advancement opportunities, and marketing/business origination. There are others, but those three give you a flavor of why women leave.

The report gives an example of a classic Mars v. Venus situation: a large percentage of firm leaders and male partners believe that their firms do a good job to advance experienced women, however, to no womans surprise, experienced women do not share that view.

Everyone and anyone who has even a smidgen of interest in why experienced women leave should read the report. Men may well be surprised, but women will not.

What should Biglaw firms do differently? Im not going to provide a list of the reports suggestions (and I do have a word count limit). You can guess what most, if not all, of them are. The bottom line is pretty simple. Change the law firm structure and culture so that firms can better address the needs of the many women they recruit and seek to retain. Well, thats easy. Not. Setting up policies and procedures is comparatively easy. Implementing them is more difficult. Compliance with them is the hardest part, and who is willing to devote nonbillable hours (at least currently) to be the enforcer?

There has to be commitment and not just lip service if this profession is ever going to look like this country. Women make up more than 50 percent of the population, they compose 50 percent of incoming law school classes, and then mid-career, women lawyers turn their backs on Biglaw, saying, in essence, phooey. Think about all the training and knowledge that Biglaw has provided only to see experienced women lawyers walking out the door. Not a very good return on the Biglaw firm investment.

K-Drama Review: "Melting Me Softly" Endorses A Sweet Love That Can Withstand Anything – hellokpop

A story of two people who are different from the rest, Melting Me Softly is about finding love while overcoming the challenges that life throws along the way.

Ma Dong Chan and Ko Mi Ran participates in a cryonic experiment in year 1999 wherein they would be frozen for 24 hours. However, things go wrong and instead of waking up at the slotted time they wake up 20 years later.

Everyone and everything including their family have changed after 20 years while they still remain the same. Now, these two have to adapt themselves to the new world. As they slowly try to move on with their lives, they start falling for each other.

Meanwhile, another challenge awaits the couple as they must keep their temperature under a certain limit in order to survive. Besides, there is a deeper conspiracy which is related to the cryonic experiment and the incident that occurred 20 years ago.

It would be an understatement to say that the main leads carried the drama on their backs and they became the primary motive for watching the show. The chemistry between the two leads is too good which make the viewers crave for more romantic moments on the screen.

The relationship between Ma Dong Chan and Ko Mi Ran started from their empathy and mutual respect for each other as fellow cryonic human to eventually getting attracted towards each other. Its endearing to watch how Ma Dong Chan and Ko Mi Ran grew to love and support each other. Their love was selfless as each of them put the other ahead of themselves. There are so many cute moments between the two such as exchanging notes for small conversations, holding hands when no one is looking and going on the sweetest dates.

The jealousy between the two is cute too but it is not overdone. Any misunderstanding was resolved soon enough and they didnt avoid talking because of the misunderstandings. That just defines the maturity and trust in their relationship which is also why the couple is so likable.

The strong point of this drama is its male lead and having Ji Chang Wook play the character makes it even better. One would wish for such an ideal character to exist in real life.Ji Chang Wook has always been effortlessly charming ever since his Healer days. Here too, as Ma Dong Chan he is the ideal guy that a girl would want to introduce to her parents. A dutiful son, a caring older brother, an uncle who is more like a friend and a passionate lover; that is what Ma Dong Chan is.

An admirable trait about Ma Dong Chan is that he is empathetic and caring towards everyone around him. He is protective of protective of Ko Mi Ran from the very beginning because he felt responsible for her current state. Also, when Ko Mi Ran got severely injured and was frozen for a long time he stayed with her family and looked after them while persistent waiting for her to come back.

Other than that, as a boyfriend he did not bind Mi Ran to any boundaries. Rather, he always chooses her happiness over anything else and did not stop her from pursuing what she wants.

There are many comedic and hilarious moments in the midst of some seriousness that tickles the spine. The humor does make up for the inaccuracies in the plot. The struggles of Ma Dong Chan and Ko Mi Ran in adjusting to a much different society is funnily portrayed. People around the two getting shocked when they mention their age or Mi Rans usage of retro stuff or Dong Chan being behind the trends are all wonderfully executed.

Ma Dong Chans interactions with his niece are sweet yet funny at the same time. Its hilarious that while Ma Dong Chan does not budge easily, he would easily listen to his nieces advice. On the other hand, the long luscious hair of Professor Hwang Gab Soo too served it purpose while it lasted.

Additionally, Shim Hyung Tak as Hwang Byung Shim added to the laughs with his over-the-top imaginations. What is even funnier is Byung Shims son, Ji Hoon too ends up falling for Mi Ran. The story arc that revolved around the pandemonium of Mi Rans prospective love interests is quite wholesome and entertaining.

The drama did start strong with the 90s backdrop that gives off a nostalgic feeling and an interesting sci-fi concept. But as the story progressed it made less sense. The sci-fi part of the story lacked logic and reasoning.

For any story to be interesting enough there should be an equally strong protagonist and antagonist. In this drama the antagonist, Lee Hyung Do had a very little impact. He gets outwitted by the protagonist and everyone else, tries to be cruel but isnt really scary.

As for Na Ha Young, it was really difficult to have any empathy towards her character. Her motivations too failed to provide any rationality. She did choose to abandon her past lover, but then cried wolf when he didnt love her anymore. Then, all of a sudden she is seeking redemption. It would have been better if her character did not sway that much.

In spite of all the flaws it has, Melting Me Softly is worth watching because of the actors. If a viewer is looking for a fluffy romance then they would like the drama, but if they start looking for logic behind the plot then they will be disappointed.

Plot aside, the romance and the comedy is great and the actors skillfully drives the drama ahead. While, Ji Chang Wook slays with the portrayal of an ideal lover that everyone wants, Won Jin Ah throws a different light to herself and proves that she can handle varied spectrum as an actress.

The love story is heartwarming as it goes about from finding love in one of the most unexpected situations to being selfless and patient in love. Ma Dong Chan and Ko Mi Ran had various struggles which includes adjusting to a changed world and trying to stay alive but they found solace in each other through love.

All in all, the drama serves its purpose in showing a stirring romance with some comedic fillers in between.

Speed of the essence when it comes to cryogenic temperature control | Food & Beverage – FOOD Magazine – Australia

In different parts of the food industry, various techniques to give foodstuffs the required temperature during or after mixing have been developed. These include adding chilled water, brine, or water ice to the product, using over-chilled or frozen ingredients, or most commonly using mechanically refrigerated mixing equipment.

Spraying or injecting a cryogenic fluid onto the product in the mixer while it is being mixed is also an efficient and safe ways of chilling. Industrial gas company Air Liquide specialises in the latter utilising liquid nitrogen or liquid carbon dioxide to chill produce quickly and effectively. There are several benefits to using cryogenic freezing, according to Stephen Crawford, who is an Air Liquide senior engineer and expert infood cryogenics.

Its not hard to implement, said Crawford. Either liquid nitrogen or liquid carbon dioxide can be sprayed onto merchandise being chilled either from the top or the bottom. Both methods are used in industry and can be installed on existingequipment.

Usually they are injected into some sort of mixer for example, protein mixing, such as beef or chicken mixing, which is being made into patties or nuggets. Its cheaper to install top mixing than it is bottom mixing, but the bottom injection method is more efficient. We use this type of injection to maintaian temperature. As food is mixed, you get friction between the product and the blades so heat is generated. You need to maintain temperature below 4C so you dontget bacterial growth.

Another benefit is that the gases have direct contact with the food. If an ammonia chiller is being used in a mixer, users might be able to cool down the walls of the mixer but there is no direct heat transfer that is possible when liquid nitrogen is injected into the mixer itself. From a heat transfer point of view its much more efficient, saidCrawford.

As mentioned, speed can be a key. Crawford cites the example of one of Air Liquides clients that specialises in producing goat cheese, a produce that is temperature sensitive.

When the milk comes out the goat, its at room temperature or above. The longer it takes to get down to 4C, the shorter the shelf life will be, he said. The company puts it into a mixer and injects liquid nitrogen at -196C through a cryo-injector. They get liquid nitrogen coming up, which rapidly cools the milk. As a comparison, mechanical chillers can only reach a temperature of -35C with ammonia refrigerant.

What would have taken them hours if you had put buckets of it in a mechanical chiller happens in just a few minutes in the mixer. You have blades inside stirring it. You dont end up freezing one portion and having another portion still warm. They are constantly stirring it while injecting liquid nitrogen. It brings down the temperature of the whole product much quicker.

Some of the mainstays of cryogenic chilling are chicken nuggets and meat patties, which are popular with those who process fast-food items. However, cryogenic chilling can also be used for dough mixing.

Most large flour mills have the flour stored in big silos outside. Industrial bakers blow it around pneumatically to get it into the mixer. It is the most efficient way for them to move the flour. The flour then comes into its mixture where it is combined with water and other ingredients. Its mixed mechanically. But the temperature of the product in pastry has an impact on the texture and the final outcome, according to Crawford.

If youre trying to make a product that has a certain amount of ingredients and you mix them all together at 15C instead of 20C, the texture of the final product will be quite different even though the ingredients are the same, said Crawford. The bakeries find especially if they have days like in the middle of summer where it is 35C when you introduce that into the dough, the dough is far too hot and melts the butter. If you can inject a small amount of cryogen, then, depending on the temperature, it can make all the difference. If it is 20C you know to inject nitrogen or carbon dioxide for 10 or so seconds, or if its 35C you might have to inject for 40 seconds. During the process, it brings the dough to a consistent mix. This means there will be the right chemical reactions with the yeast. Over the years, Air Liquide has acquired a deep knowledge of process parameters through hundreds of references in cryogenic chilling worldwide and knows how to implement the right recipe to reach desired outcomes.

Crawford also talks of the safety aspects the cryogenic chilling can offer. Most large commercial chillers have ammonia in them, which means they have a refrigeration cycle, so theyll have a pump that is compressing the ammonia. Like a fridge at home, the wires on the back get hot. Theres a heat pump that takes the heat energy from inside the box and puts it into the grill at the back. An industrial refrigerator works the same way but ends up with large cooling towers to get rid of allthe excessive heat.

This means factories have these ammonia lines running through their plants which you wouldnt want to spring a leak, said Crawford. However, with cryogenics, if you have a minor leak of nitrogen, it must be repaired, but it is not an immediate hazard. Eighty per cent of the air we breathe is nitrogen. Ammonia is a corrosive and toxic chemical and customers require ammonia sensors around the place. Often they spend a lot of money maintaining it, and then you have the cooling towers and all the other issues with the cooling water side of it.

Some synergies are also possible with other processes down the chain, such as food freezing and modified atmosphere packaging that also use nitrogen, carbon dioxide and mixtures thereof, which further reduce the cost of operations compared to mechanical chilling.

Another advantage is that it is very reliable because there are very few moving parts when working with cryogenic chilling, said Crawford. The injectors can be retrofitted on customers existing mixers.

With only a valve to open and close, there is no compressor that needs to be maintained like on a mechanical system. The servicing requirements just arent there. The cooling equipment we have is better. There is nothing hard about what we are doing. Its an easy method for people to learn to do. We can even maintain the equipment for our customers.

To save koalas from fire, we need to start putting their genetic material on ice – The Conversation AU

Thousands of koalas may have died in fires burning through New South Wales but expert evidence to a state parliamentary inquiry on Monday said we are unlikely to ever know the real numbers.

Unprecedented fires have burned through millions of hectares of forest, including koala habitat and rainforests untouched by fire for thousands of years.

Read more: It's only October, so what's with all these bushfires? New research explains it

The devastation wont stop once the fires are out. Koala populations that survive the fires could be cut off from each other, lowering their genetic diversity and threatening their long-term survival.

To protect Australias iconic koalas we need to start freezing their genetic material. With more investment in the fast-developing field of cryogenics, koala hospitals could start taking samples from their patients, creating a vital lifeline for the species as a whole.

Fire seasons are starting earlier, lasting longer and becoming more intense, made worse by climate change.

This season, there is an above-average risk of serious fires across an extensive range of koala habitat on Australias east coast.

Experts at the NSW inquiry estimated about 2,000 koalas may have died in fires already this year, and the destruction of habitat means further population declines are inevitable. With areas not usually threatened by fires now at risk, we need new plans for future conservation.

Koalas are highly vulnerable to fire. The heat burns their paws and fur, and the superheated air can cause internal damage to their lungs. The canopy of eucalypt forests is their only refuge, but offers no protection during high-intensity bushfires.

Beyond this direct threat, when large numbers of koalas are killed or badly injured, the genetic diversity of their local populations shrinks.

Over the coming months, koalas will depend heavily on wildlife hospitals for rehabilitation and recovery after fires.

Small, fragmented groups of koalas living in habitat on the edge of urban areas, such as the coastal areas of Port Macquarie and Port Stephens, are particularly at risk.

Port Stephens experienced several fires in 2018 that burned thousands of hectares of koala habitat. This followed a similarly catastrophic fire season five years earlier.

If these events continue at the same rate or, as predicted by climate modelling, become more intense and more frequent we may lose sources of koala genetic diversity that cannot be replaced.

Read more: Koalas sniff out juicy leaves and break down eucalypt toxins it's in their genome

Sudden reductions in population size can cause genetic bottlenecks that lead to inbreeding. Eventually this reduces reproductive fitness and makes extinction more probable.

Take, for example, a koala population like that of Port Macquarie, between 1,000 and 2,000 individuals. We estimate that losing 350 koalas from this group would increase inbreeding by 20-50%. It would take five to ten years for the population to recover, assuming no further fires in that time.

While many volunteers and professionals do fantastic work to help koalas survive fire, we have no strategy for safeguarding genetic diversity and reducing the risk of inbreeding.

But we can take a lesson from botanical gardens, which routinely freeze genetic material for seed banks. Freezing koala sperm, eggs and embryos could offer a way to preserve genetic diversity ahead of further population crashes.

Read more: It's fish on ice, as frozen zoos make a last-ditch attempt to prevent extinction

Artificial reproduction for koalas and marsupials generally is developing quickly. Scientists have used freshly collected sperm to artificially inseminate zoo koalas, which resulted in the birth of live young.

However, the technology does not yet exist to freeze, store and then use koala sex cells. Components of this process do exist, but there is no complete system for marsupials.

If that capacity existed, koala hospitals could easily and inexpensively begin collecting genetic samples from their patients.

Although NSW has invested significantly in koala conservation in recent years, we argue that future funding should also support applied research to make this technology a reality for not only koalas but other marsupials.

Koalas and many other native species are exceptionally unprotected in this new era of record-breaking fires. We need to start planning and investing in long-term conservation solutions and new research-based technologies that provide a last line of defence against the possibility of permanent extinction.
