2012 Innovation - Discovery Awards
Christopher McMaster, Ph.D., is the Carnegie and Rockefeller Professor and Chair of Pharmacology at Dalhousie University, co-director of the Cheminformatics Drug Discovery Lab at the IWK Health Centre and co-founder of the Halifax-based biotechnology company DeNovaMed. He is a shining example of a science innovator. In his research and entrepreneurial guises, Dr. McMaster is at the forefront of research that seeks to harness gene sequence and protein modeling technologies to design drugs that are very specific in their action and which are directed at widespread problems. These include antibiotic resistant "superbugs" such as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (aka MRSA), as well as #39;orphan diseases #39; -- diseases that are very rare and typically incurable. His innovative approaches have been well funded, including nearly $5 million from Genome Canada. Dr. McMaster has twice been ranked first in national salary award competitions and first in Nova Scotia as a Clinical Research Scholar. Also featured in this video: Srinivas ("Srini") Sampalli, Ph.D., professor in the Faculty of Computer Science, Dalhousie University and Gary Humphries (BComm #39;71), Trans Industrial Packaging, pioneered the development and commercialization of a unique thermal sustainable packaging format dubbed Thermafresh trade;.From:discoverycentre1593Views:0 0ratingsTime:06:07More inScience Technology

Training researchers of the future
Students in Advanced Micro- and Nano-biotechnology, a fourth-year course in Biomedical Engineering, are working on a real problem posed by professors Maite Mujika and Sergio Arana. The students spent the term detecting infections caused by bacterial strains, working through the lens of micro- and nano-technology. To do this, the students-turned-researchers had to find the scientific articles most closely related to the problem under study and then design their own microsensor, which they built in a clean room and tested in the labs at Tecnun-CEIT. The students worked with samples of the bacterial strain Staphylococcus spidermidis, which they grew on the microsensors they had built using silicon technology. At the end of the course, the different groups participated in a workshop where they had to present the results of their work and what they learned, either as a poster or an oral presentation. Some of the projects will be also be presented at CASEIB, the annual meeting of the Spanish Society for Biomedical Engineering, which will take place in San Sebastian on 19-21 November.From:CeitTVViews:0 0ratingsTime:02:59More inScience Technology

Transhumanism, Stargates Watchers
Researcher Tom Horn outlined connections between transhumanism, the #39;Watchers, #39; and stargates. Interestingly, transhumanism, which involves human enhancement through such fields as biotech, appears in ancient texts, he said. Repeatedly, he ran across the idea of god-like beings (or the Watchers) coming down to Earth and genetically tinkering with humans, as well as blending different species together. Classical mythology may have been a crude record of these blending experiments, he noted. Horn postulated the Watchers needed to blend human/animal forms in order to create a suitable body to extend themselves-- a regular human spirit wouldn #39;t enter such a hybrid form. Now, developments in fields such as biotechnology could be leading to a new mechanism for the Watchers return, he cautioned. Stargates or wormholes may be used by advanced beings to traverse through dimensions, time, and vast distances, said Horn. He recounted details from the epic tale of Nimrod, a giant who #39;d undergone a transformation and built the Tower of Babel as a kind of stargate. Horn also discussed prophecy, the Mayans and 2012. Biography: Tom Horn is a researcher and freelance writer whose Raiders News Update reports have been referred to by writers of the LA Times Syndicate, MSNBC, Christianity Today, World Net Daily, White House Correspondents and dozens of news magazines and press agencies around the globe. Tom has appeared on numerous programs worldwide and once served as national spokesperson ...From:DiscloseTruthTVViews:54 5ratingsTime:01:18:06More inEducation
