Beckman: Arts and Sciences @ Syracuse University – Video

Beckman: Arts and Sciences @ Syracuse University
Korrie Mack #39;s first experience in a research lab involved unpacking boxes, organizing benches, assembling equipment, and labeling countless drawers to help a new faculty member set up his laboratory during the fall of 2011. A year later, the senior biochemistry major in Syracuse University #39;s College of Arts and Sciences, is cloning and purifying proteins, identifying their properties using mass spectroscopy, and carrying out her own research in the area of protein-based biological sensors. Mack and Manu Arul, a junior biophysical science major, are SU #39;s 2012 Beckman Scholars. Funded by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, the highly competitive program supports select students interested in chemistry, biochemistry, and the biological and medical sciences. Beckman Scholars receive $19300 in financial support over two summers and a full academic year for laboratory research, scientific meeting travel funds, and research supplies. Mack and Arul are now halfway through their Beckman Scholars program. They spent the summer of 2012 working in research labs and will continue working on their projects through the summer of 2013. Mack works in the laboratory of Ivan Korendovych, assistant professor of chemistry; Arul works with Liviu Movileanu, associate professor of physics and director of the Biophysical Science Program in The College of Arts and Sciences. Both students are studying the potential of proteins for use as biological sensors, but they approach the topic from ...From:SyracuseArtsSciencesViews:0 0ratingsTime:06:20More inEducation

Introduction We have been treated lots of subjects about sciences and technologies. some subjects were familiar with us but the others were not. This class helped to improve our understaing about scientific issues and make us grdually grow familiar with many scientific words. Every one has different opinions about each subject. now we are talking about the most impressive issues based on our memories. It is geoengineering and biology and space. body1. Geoengineering is the most memorable topic to me. It was really amazing that there are many ways to reduce global warming, like space mirror, phytoplankton, artificial trees, and so on. Before I take this class, I don #39;t know there are such nice technologies. When writing an essay about artificial trees, I found how good that artificial tree is. It can absorb thousands times more CO2 than a real tree, and also in the future we expect we can use that carbon to make other substances. Space mirror was also interesting, because it can reduce the amount of sun light that comes into the earth by using mirror that I imagined when I was young. But, even though there are nice technologies, people should not feel relieved. The most important thing is our effort to reduce green house gas, I think. body2 Biology was the most interesting topic to me, at the same times, it is one of the difficult topics to me. Even though I #39;m majoring in biochemistry which is quite similar to biology. I learned a lot through this class. Before the biology ...From: #44397; #50689; #51221;Views:2 0ratingsTime:06:21More inPeople Blogs
