The Very Predictable Results Of Cutting Planned Parenthood Funding – Yahoo Lifestyle

Many of us saw this coming. Because, frankly, its common sense. When you take away programs that educate, protect, and provide healthcare for millions of Americans who may not receive that education, protection, or healthcare otherwise, the repercussions arent going to be good.

Yet, in the name of Christianity? Protecting tax dollars? Morals? Values? And, of course, saving lives, the relentless campaign against Planned Parenthood continues and has effectively shut down many of their valuable health centers around the country.

Health centers that staunch pro-lifers work tirelessly to defund, despite the fact that they provide the following per year:

birth control for nearly two million people

over 4.2 million STD tests and treatments

over 320,000 breast exams

nearly 295,000 Pap tests

Ironic, isnt it? Hypocritical even? Because what does birth control prevent? Unwanted or unplanned pregnancies. What do STD tests and treatments prevent and treat? Harmful or potential fatal diseases. What do breast exams and Pap tests detect? Cancer that will need medical intervention to save lives.

Hmmm.

So here were are, in 2020, still fighting with stubborn anti-abortion activists over the same basic points: Planned Parenthood does far more than provide abortion services. In fact, many of the shuttered clinics around the nation were not even ones that performed the procedure at all. What they were doing, however, before having their doors closed was reducing and preventing abortions by offering education, protection, and birth control, among other health services.

Finallyand this ones a real sticking pointabortions have taken place since the dawn of mankind. And they will still continue to take place. Defunding Planned Parenthood will not stop them. They will only make them less safe. And, as statistics are now showing, removing programs like those offered by Planned Parenthood actually increases the rates of teen pregnancies. Guess what option many teens will turn to when faced with an unwanted pregnancy? You guessed it.

Round and round we go.

Lets look at the state of Texas, for example. Prior to 2011, the teen birth rate in Texas had fallen by an impressive 44% between 1988 and 2011. But that year former Texas Governor Rick Perry slashed the family planning budget by 67% (from $111 million to $37.9) during which 82 clinics were closed statewide (none of which performed abortions, by the way). And in the years that followed, interestingly but not surprisingly, the teen birth rate went back up.

In a state that already has a high percentage of abstinence-only sex ed and, as an equally depressing alternative, no sexual education at all, closing Planned Parenthood clinics is just another door shut in the face of young women who need it. Its just another way for conservative Americans to cross their arms and turn away, refusing to acknowledge that like it or not, girls and young women have sex. They always have. They always will. And they need education, protection, birth control, and health care.

Another disastrous effect seen in Texas isthat pregnancy-related deaths doubled after the state stopped reimbursing Planned Parenthood and imposed drastic funding cuts for womens health. Hows that for being pro-life?

On the other hand, lets look at Colorado, where the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation gave the state $23 million over six years to provide free or low-cost contraception to low-income women. The results were telling. The teen birth rate dropped 40% from 2009 to 2013, while the teen abortion rate fell 42%. And the abortion rate for all women fell 34%.

Thats one of the many valuable things Planned Parenthood does for womenprovides them with contraception so they can prevent unwanted pregnancies, continue with their education, and make their own choice of if and when theyd like to become mothers.

But you know what? This is far more than a debate about abortion. Because the truth is, Planned Parenthood is often the only healthcare option for women in this country, and if PP health centers cant provide care for them, nobody will. In fact, in more than 20% of the counties where Planned Parenthood health centers operate, there are no other health care providers who serve patients who rely on safety-net providers. The bottom line is that so many women and girls have nowhere else to go.

Family planning clinics are a lifeline for many low-income and rural women. Four in ten women who go to family planning centers describe the clinics as their only source of medical care, a USA Today article reports.

Four in ten.

How again are we making America great when we defund and force clinics to permanently close their doors, causing girls and young women around the nation to be less safe and at a greater risk of harm, illness, or death because their safety net is gone?

Also, another common retort those against Planned Parenthood use is that other healthcare providers can and will absorb Planned Parenthoods patients. Heres why thats false and frankly a dangerous mindset to have. As explained on I Stand With Planned Parenthood, Providers of ob-gyn care who accept Medicaid, such as Planned Parenthood, are in particularly short supply. In addition, Planned Parenthood health centers are more likely than other safety-net family planning providers to provide the full range of birth control (including IUDs and implants) on-site and more likely to offer rapid-result HIV testing. Even The American Public Health Association says its ludicrousfor politicians to claim that other providers could simply absorb Planned Parenthoods patients.

Its not just about birth control and pregnancies either. An article in USA Today reported that among the five health centers closed in Indiana, one was in rural Scott County, which also happens to be the epicenter of the worst HIV outbreak in the states history.

Treating those infected in the epidemic will cost more than $100 million, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the USA Today reports. Like many PP clinics, the one in Scott County provided HIV testing and referrals to care in an area with a shortage of doctors and limited medical resources. Now its gone.

Side note: like the other Indiana health centers that have shut down, this clinic also did not perform abortions.

Thats what is happening here. So many resources and much-needed aid are being stripped away from Americans in need, all in the name of a hot-button political issue. At the end of the day, the nationwide defunding and barrage of attacks on Planned Parenthood is hurting America, not making it great.

Heres where we are on a national scale. According to the Guttmacher Institute, in 2013, publicly funded family planning services like those Planned Parenthood provides helped women prevent two million unintended pregnancies and 693,000 abortions. Without these valuable services, rates of unintended pregnancies, unplanned births, and abortions would have been 60% higher, the research says.

And over the last few years, however, more and more family planning budgets have been slashed. Clinics and health centers have been closed. What do you think is going to happen to these numbers if we continue to strip Americans in need of vital medical care?

So again, what does it really mean to be pro-life?

I Created a Vision Board For Life Outside of Motherhood to Help Me Regain My Identity – Yahoo Lifestyle

In August of 2017 I brought my first little human into the world and left my job at an ad agency to pursue my lifelong dream of raising a family. I spent my days cleaning, playing, and teaching, and my nights gushing over the adorable pictures and videos I'd taken throughout the day and reading up on every developmental milestone, parenting hack, and how-to the internet could possibly muster. Then I started to notice myself slipping away. I loved my son so much that it was easy to pour every ounce of energy and spare second into him, but I owed it to my family and myself to regain a sense of individuality and identity that had once been an integral part of my life, and I knew exactly where to start.

During my stint in ad agency life, my team and I spent time brainstorming the best ways to build brands from the ground up. We'd often rely on the construction of a vision board to keep us focused on what we wanted a brand to feel like, look like, and sound like. These vision boards became crucial reference points as we moved along in the process in making sure each decision was aligned with our end goal. So I kicked off my hunt to regain my sense of identity by creating a vision board of my own.

I started by creating some overarching categories to act as a guide for filling out my board, like intellectual, physical, spiritual, professional, and social areas of development. Then, under each category, I listed off some of my existing hobbies and interests like politics, sports, and my religion. I was dusting off and recommitting to engaging these parts of me that had been dormant for what felt like an eternity, and it was liberating.

There's More to Me Than Being a Mom

I loved looking back at the many parts of me that once existed, but I wanted to direct my focus to the future. I've always wanted to learn to fix cars, take up woodworking, and speak a second language, so onto the list they went. My blood starts pumping when I think about learning to kickbox, and I want to focus more time on developing professionally, so those two made the cut. As the wheels of who I wanted to become outside of motherhood started turning, so did my confidence that I could accomplish even more in and outside of the home.

The next step was to transform all of these thoughts and ideas into an eye catching and inspiring vision board. I found pictures to symbolize each list item, printed them off, cut them out, and Mod Podged them to a foam board that now sits on the desk in the corner of my room. It's not the most professional piece of art I've ever taken in, but few artistic expressions have struck me to my core quite like my vision board.

Each time I catch a glimpse of my board, it breathes life into what can feel like mundane days and weeks, and reminds me that my hopes and dreams for personal development and my dedication to motherhood don't have to be mutually exclusive. I can be an engaged and devoted mother who woodworks, kickboxes, and speaks Arabic. If every spare second I have doesn't go to my kids' needs, I haven't failed. I've shown my kids what it means to develop and accomplish. I've shown them that investing time in themselves isn't selfish, it's necessary, even when they become parents.

Kering Turned Over $17.15 Billion in 2019 – Yahoo Lifestyle

Click here to read the full article.

Fashion is now big business. And Kering is cashing into the tune of $17.15 billion.

That gargantuan sum is the figure the luxury groupowner of Gucci, Saint Laurent and Bottega Venetaturned over in 2019. The majority of that number$10.42 billion to be exactwas generated by Gucci alone, despite the emergence of the deadly coronavirus at the end of the year. As a whole, the groups margins surpassed the 30 percent mark for the first time.

More from Robb Report

In a statement, Kering CEO Franois-Henri Pinault acknowledged the deadly viruswhich, as of press time, had claimed 1370 lives and infected more than 64,000 peopleand pledged to support the the Chinese people.

In the difficult period that China is going through, we would like to express once again our support for all our collaborators and our solidarity with the Chinese people, Pinault said. The particularly uncertain environment that prevails at the present time does not, however, call into question the fundamentals of Kering on the luxury market.

Kering is one of several companies in the fashion industry to donate to relief efforts related to the deadly disease. China and the surrounding territories play a key role in Kerings long-term growth strategy, so its no surprise the CEO would tout the conglomerates financial security as the virus roils markets.

As for the other houses under the Kering umbrella, a full breakdown of each labels earnings was not provided. The companys report, however, revealed that growth varied among its brands. Bottega Veneta, for instance, appears to have grown the least amongst the brands disclosed, only inching up 2.2 percent year on year. That news comes as something of a surprise given new creative director Daniel Lees viral approach to promoting the brand.

As for Kerings future trajectory, that may depend on how fast the coronavirus is contained. The company has temporarily closed half of its stores in China for an undetermined amount of time. Given that China accounts for more than a third of luxury sales worldwide, its safe to say that the luxury group is anxiously awaiting a resolution.

Kate Middleton and Prince William Step Out for a Rare Appearance With Prince Charles and Camilla – Yahoo Lifestyle

From Town & Country

Prince Charles and Camilla and Prince William and Kate arrived for a rare joint engagement today, where they will be visiting a rehabilitation center for members of the armed forces. The foursome pulled up in two cars at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre in Loughborough just before midday to meet staff and patients.

Despite heavy hail before they arrived, the weather brightened in time for the royals to walk from their cars to the 300 million center.

While all four royals have busy timetables of official engagements, it is rare to see a joint trip, and the visit reflects the importance of supporting servicemen and women to the royal family. It also offers a look at the monarchys future, with the two couples now holding the fort when it comes to duties supporting the Queen. With Prince Philip retired, Prince Andrew stepping back, and Prince Harry and Meghan forging their own path, the number of family members carrying out engagements has significantly fallen.

But those in the direct line of succession have demonstrated they are carrying on as usual, with several visits already announced for both couples for the next few weeks.

Today they were welcomed by Captain Alison Hofman QARNNS, Commanding Officer of the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) and taken on a tour of the site.

They were due to visit some of the therapy areas and observe patients undertaking gym rehabilitation sessions. A stop at the prosthetics workshop to hear from patients and staff about the services available was also planned. A reception for staff and patients and the unveiling a plaque will conclude the visit.

The new 300 million Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, known as DMRC Stanford Hall, is operated by the Ministry of Defence and began admitting patients in October 2018. It took over from Headley Court in Surrey as the main rehabilitation center for the armed forces.

Prince William was patron of the charity raising money for the new center, and said at the handover: "I have seen the growth of an idea transfer into what we see today, and it is a rare and immensely satisfying thing to have witnessed.

The DNRC initiative stemmed from the 6th Duke of Westminsters idea to support servicemen. Gerald Grosvenor initiated a founding gift of 70 million. Following his death in 2016, his son Hugh and the Grosvenor family have carried forward his idea and the familys overall gift now stands at 105 million.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteleys Thong Toe Sandals Are The Unlikely Hero of Her Ensemble – Yahoo Lifestyle

Click here to read the full article.

Rosie Huntington Whiteleys on-trend ensemble for the Byredo store opening event last night deserves some special attention. For the occasion in Los Angeles on Feb. 13, the 32-year-old model was spotted wearing a minimalist, sharply tailored Bottega Venetta chocolate brown suit. The blazer had a deep V-neckline and a narrow belt that cinched at the waist. On the bottom, her trousers has a relaxed-fit silhouette, mimicking a jogger-style pant, especially when cuffed by the ankle straps of her sandals.

More from Footwear News

Speaking of, Whiteley opted to finish off the look with one of the most controversial and trendiest shoe styles of the moment: the high-heeled thong sandal. The model is wearing the Bottega Veneta Spiral Sandals in chocolate. The Italian-made shoe has a single diagonal strap over foot, as well as a toe ring. Together this achieves the thong look. The aforementioned ankle straps coil around the leg like a snake.

This sighting confirms that Whiteley continues to be among the avid wearers of this celebrity-beloved trend. Recently, the multi-hyphenate was spotted in another Bottega Veneta version of the silhouette twice: first in the white colorway while in Los Angeles and then again in the brown iteration of the same style in New York City.

Joining Whiteley, actress Kate Bosworth also chose to wear a more minimalist ensemble for the event. She styled an oversized white dress and a pair of short black heels, featuring silver crystal embellishment. Suited for the occasion, Bosworth accessorized the look with a Byredo handbag. The closed-toe pumps offer a similar aesthetic to this Gianvito Rossi crystal-embellished sandals that Whiteley wore a few weeks ago for the Hourglass launch party in London.

From these chic ensembles, these two shoe trends show no signs of slowing down for the season ahead.
