Ribbon "lifting" for 100000th cross display at IRRI
Also see: http://www.youtube.com On 29 November 2012, the community at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI; irri.org) celebrated the 100000th rice breeding cross, a true milestone in the Institute #39;s 52-year history existence. The parents for the 100000th cross were IR09M105 and NSICRC 214.The objective of this particular cross was to improve eating quality. In this clip, Bas Bouman (left), director of the Global Rice Science Partnership (GRiSP) and Bruce Tolentino, deputy director general for communications and partnerships, "lift" the ribbon at the display showing the mature plants resulting from the cross along with the parents in the background. Glenn Gregorio, senior scientist in Plant Breeding, Genetics, and Biotechnology (PBGB) at IRRI, is the MC wrapped in the ribbon by Dr. Bouman at the conclusion. Special guest at the event was Rizal M. Herrera, who was among the first breeders to make crosses at IRRI in the early 1960s - http - Mr. Herrera arrived at IRRI in 1961 as a research aide and retired 36 years later in 1997 as a senior assistant scientist.
