POA Patient Profile: Amanda - Hemipelvectomy Amputee
Amanda was just finishing her first year of medical school when she was diagnosed with a large osteochondroma sarcoma in her pelvis. After efforts to treat and stop the progression of the disease failed, her doctors had no choice but to perform a hemipelvectomy (through the pelvis) amputation. Amanda #39;s surgeon used an experimental procedure where the thigh muscles are packed into the pelvic region, leaving all nerves and blood vessels intact. The procedure was successful, leaving Amanda with a good padding of muscle at the amputation site which not only allows her to sit more comfortably, but provides a good surface for her prosthetic limb.
