In the summer of 2012 Matís opened a branch in Snaefellsnes in Breidafjordur, which has for long been important to Iceland for its various sources of food. There is a wide range of operations in the area involving marine catches as there is no other place in Iceland with a greater diversity on shore and in the sea. Large quantities of algae can be found in Breidafjordur and abundance fauna of invertebrates. The rich food supply is directly related to the extensive shallow and large shores, which are the largest in Iceland. As a matter of fact, almost 65% of rocky all shores and 40% of clay areas of in Iceland are in the fjord of Breiðafjordur. Breidafjordur is an important spawning and breeding area for many species that are important for the Icelandic economy, such as cod, shrimp, scallop and lumpfish.
