Longevity and the Family Home - HDE 117
Hi, my name is Krystal Fergel and I am an undergraduate at the University of California, Davis. Today I am going to run through a quick video of the life course concept of the family home and the ways in which the family home as we know it today may change as a result of increased longevity - via a hypothetical life course of an individual who lives to be 120 years of age, where the average person in this era lives around the same time. I would like to start off with the fact that with an increase in longevity there is an increase in the expansion of life cycle stages. This includes the life cycle stages of development. An individual who lives to be 120 will have the same life and live in the same type of society as before. However, as you can see in the human growth trajectory - shown by the two way arrows - there will be more time spent in each stage of development. There will be an expansion of each stage of life as a result of living longer. The ways in which the family home will change as a result of this expansion of the developmental stages (resulting from increased longevity) is that an individual has more time to master the skills and milestones at each stage of development. As a result, whether you are a parent or a child, a brother or a sister, an individual #39;s experiences within the family home will affect who they become and the extent of life stressors that an individual is exposed to.
