Hospitals make dramatic improvements in heart attack care

Major heart attack patients are getting faster treatment at hospitals, according to a new study Dr. John Brushpublished this week by the American Heart Association. That’s thanks in part to John E. Brush Jr., MD, cardiologist and EVMS assistant professor of clinical internal medicine. Brush played a leading role in designing the American College of Cardiology campaign that encourages hospitals to adopt key strategies that help speed care for major heart attack patients. The ACC campaign was one of several sited as contributing to the improvement in heart attack patient care.

The study reports that hospitals across the country are treating nearly all patients in need of angioplasty within the recommended 90 minutes of hospital arrival. Five years ago less than half of patients were treated so quickly. Read more about the study and dramatic improvement in heart attack care.

Retired Air Force Major Robert H. Parent leads graduates in the oath of office aboard the USS Wisconsin.

Five medical school graduates bound for military service were in dress uniform Thursday on the fantail of the USS Wisconsin for the annual EVMS Military Commissioning Ceremony.

Family and friends were on hand in the shadow of the ship's massive 16-inch guns to applaud the graduates and to help pin on symbols of their military rank.

Keynote speaker James J. Fletcher, DPM, MD, a 2003 EVMS graduate, recounted memories of his own commissioning ceremony aboard the ship and reminded them of the gravity of their commitment.

"It is already a noble thing to be a physician. You have also chosen another noble field. You have chosen to serve your country," he said. "You have dedicated yourself to taking care of those who protect our country. They believe in you to take care of them, they trust in you to take care of their families while they're gone. They trust in you that you will be there for them and that you will give best."

International MD Program Accepting Overseas Students

Vita-Salute San Raffaele
International MD Program

Vita-Salute San Raffaele University http://bit.ly/unisr01 is part of the San Raffaele Foundation which includes Hospitals, Research Centers and the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University. San Raffaele is well known worldwide for its excellence: it is a highly specialized center for molecular medicine, diabetes and metabolic diseases, as well as biotechnology and bio-imaging. The Hospital channels many of its resources into cancer treatment, cardiovascular diseases and numerous acute and chronic-degenerative diseases and a very efficient Emergency Department that serves a vast area.

The International MD Program builds on the institution’s solid presence on the international scene: San Raffaele healthcare centers can be found in many countries of the world, including Brazil, India, Uganda, Poland, Chile, Israel, Mozambique and Algeria.
This degree course provides medical-scientific education at the highest level, allowing students to improve their skills and to upgrade their knowledge. It also provides clinical and laboratory research opportunities and additional education in humanities and cultural sciences: philosophy, communication skills, cognitive neurosciences and psychology, which are the building blocks of human society, regardless of social status, race, or creed.

The International MD Program is designed to train a new kind of doctor: someone who possesses the necessary human, cultural and professional abilities to actively participate in healthcare and share ideas in today’s globalized world. Unlike other Medical Programs in Italy where clinical courses are held in Italian,

the International MD Program is fully in English, including classes, lectures, practicals and all clinical activities.

Students enrolled in the San Raffaele International MD Program have access to all the facilities of the Vita-Salute San Raffaele Institute and the San Raffaele Scientific Institute, including skills labs for practical training, a library with more than 20,000 books and several thousand scientific e-publications and resources, as well as to the clinical and research laboratories of the San Raffaele Scientific Institute http://bit.ly/scientificinstitute, the largest private research institute in Italy, that further expanded with the inauguration of DIBIT, a scientific facility for basic, translational and clinical research.

DIBIT is part of the largest biomedical science park in Italy, which includes the San Raffaele Hospital, Science Park Raf, created to support the foundation's development, and the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.

Award-winning chef Todd Jurich teams up with EVMS to teach diabetes-friendly cooking

jurich-toddAward-winning chef, Todd Jurich of Todd Jurich's Bistro in downtown Norfolk has teamed up with Eastern Virginia Medical School's Strelitz Diabetes Center to teach people how to cook a healthy, tasty meal for loved ones living with diabetes.

Jurich opened his kitchen to WVEC 13 News (click photo to view the video) to demonstrate how to prepare an original meal — a pumpkin and crab soup followed by cauliflower couscous with smoked raisins and sundried cranberries served with pepper seared coho salmon.

"November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and diet is such an important part of preventing and managing diabetes," Mr. Jurich says. "Like many families, mine has been impacted by diabetes, and I wanted to find a way that I could help address this issue."

Mr. Jurich worked with Phyllis Woodson, MS, registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator at the center, to develop the meal as well as several diabetes-friendly items that will debut on the bistro's menu in November.
