Genetic modification is a frightening prospect for many, taking information from species as distinct as plants and animals and combining them in ways that threaten our intuitive notions of essentialism. Such techniques were not invented by humans in the latter part of the 20th century, but are an ancient adaptation of many micro-organisms.
