The 100+ people in attendance heard from patient advocates about living with neurodegenerative disease and from scientists about recent progress in stem cell research that may lead to new treatments. The event was held at UC-Irvine's Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center

Ferrandino's son, Drew, was diagnosed with Batten disease in January 2007. Ferrandino spoke about his family's journey to identify Drew's condition and to seek out a treatment.
