Laugh at death at Frozen Dead Guy Days

What do you get when you combine a hearse parade, coffin races and a deceased senior citizen whos been packed in dry ice for 23 years?

Most places, youd just get funny looks or a cease-and-desist order but in Nederland, Colo., you get the annual Frozen Dead Guy Days festival. Running March 24, this celebration of the big sleep is wild enough to wake the dead and earn the hallowed honor of Overhead Bins Weird Festival of the Month for March.

Its the Mardi Gras of the cryonics community, said Bo Iceman Shaffer, who, among other things, is the man responsible for keeping said senior citizen, aka Grandpa Bredo, well-chilled. Like Mardi Gras is for religion, this is kind of serious but also about having fun.

The serious side dates back to 1989 when Grandpa Bredo Morstoel died in his native Norway. Four years later, his frozen remains ended up in Nederland where family members had founded the International Cryonics Institute and Center for Life Extension (ICICLE) on the outskirts of town.

We are a low-tech, backyard cryonics facility, said Shaffer. Were researching how you, too, can do backyard cryonics.

At this point, the research is essentially limited to maintaining Grandpa Bredos mortal remains in a shed containing a stainless-steel sarcophagus kept at -100 degrees. To that end, Shaffer hauls up to a ton of dry ice up to the facility once a month and repacks him for posterity.

Bredo is one of our best citizens, said local resident Dave Felkley. He doesnt party; he doesnt cause any disturbance.

He does, however, inspire others, which is how Frozen Dead Guy Days came about 11 years ago. We were known as the town with the frozen dead guy, said event coordinator Amanda MacDonald, so the Chamber of Commerce thought, hey, why dont we throw a festival?

Frozen Dead Guy Days Live On This Weekend

Coffin Races at Frozen Dead Guy Days in Nederland (credit: CBS)

NEDERLAND, Colo. (CBS4)- The infamous Frozen Dead Guy Days kicked off in Nederland today for a weekend of festivities. The annual event is three days of wild and wacky celebrations.

The Parade of Hearses and Coffin Races are the most popular attractions. Theres also a Brain Freezer beer tent and several live bands.

Festival goers can also embark on a Tour to the Tuff Shed where Grandpa Bredo resides.

Frozen Dead Guy Days got its roots in Nederland 11 years ago. It stems from the legend of Grandpa Bredo, who died in Norway in 1989. He was packed in dry ice and shipped to the Trans Time cryonics facility in Oakland, Cali. where he was placed in liquid nitrogen for almost four years.

In 1993, he was moved to Colorado to stay with his daughter and grandson. He stayed frozen in a shed near his grandsons home for years. Little knwon to the family, it was illegal to store a frozen human in Nederland. But after some negotiations with the city council, Grandpa Bredo was allowed to stay.

Now, every month a man known as Ice Man and a team of volunteers deliver 1,600 pounds of dry ice to Grandpa Bredo, who has remained frozen for 22 years.

People from all over the world descend on Nederland to celebrate Frozen Dead Guy Days every winter.

Pop Traveler: Eleven reasons to visit Phoenix!

Note: In the Pop Traveler, Pop Candy readers name their city's top pop-culture hot spots/events. Wanna write about your town? Holler at popcandy@usatoday.com.

By Scott Hopkins, Special Correspondent for Pop Candy

If you've never been to Phoenix, it's possible you may be one of those people who still believes this western city is all about cactus and cowboys. The truth is, in spite of its Wild West history, today's Phoenix is a vibrant, ever- growing metropolis as "modern" as any other city in the U.S.

It took awhile to get here, but Phoenix is a pretty hip place to visit -- that is, if you know where to go. With that in mind, I thought I'd share a few of my favorite "pop spots" in town:

1. Pollack Tempe Cinemas -- Every city has a discount, second-run movie theater, but there aren't many like this one. From the moment you enter the doors, it becomes clear that this isn't just your run-of-the-mill multiplex, it's also one amazing pop-culture museum. The lobby includes a full animatronic band playing today's hits, a large display case filled with lunch boxes from the '50s through the '70s and a stunning collection of life-size figures that includes Darth Vader, Superman, Al Pacino, James Dean, the "Rat Pack" and several former U.S. presidents. Theater owner Michael Pollock is an Arizona real-estate magnate as well as an avid pop-culture collector.

2. Arizona Biltmore -- The Arizona Biltmore is the only existing hotel with a Frank Lloyd Wright-influenced design. It was built by Albert Chase McArthur, once a dedicated student of Wright's in Chicago. The beautiful resort opened in 1929 and quickly became a popular getaway for Hollywood stars, foreign dignitaries and presidents. Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. once gave an impromptu mini-concert in the hotel's lobby and it's been well-documented that composer Irving Berlin wrote several of his famous compositions poolside at this resort, including White Christmas.

3. Alice Cooperstown -- Playing off the name of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Upstate New York, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and local hero Alice Cooper opened his sports bar in 1998, in the shadow of Chase Field. This restaurant boasts some excellent chow, a great party vibe and is packed to the ceiling with the best sports and rock 'n' roll memorabilia around.

4. Alcor Life Extension Foundation -- For sci-fi geeks, Michael Crichton fans and those who may have a curiosity that tends toward the morbid, you might want to check out Alcor, the famous cryonics facility in Scottsdale, Ariz. Founded in 1972, the Alcor Life Extension Foundation is the world leader in cryonics research and technology. Essentially, this is where some quite wealthy people have been put on ice in the hopes of someday being thawed and cured of whatever disease or condition knocked them off. The facility offers tours by appointment on Tuesdays and Fridays.

5. Durant's -- In 1950, Jack Durant, a former pit boss for gangster Bugsy Siegel at Las Vegas's Flamingo Hotel, relocated to Phoenix and opened this steakhouse and watering hole. If the black and blood-red wallpaper could talk, it would tell you of the times Clark Gable, Jane Russell and John Wayne sat in these swanky leather booths and how, on one especially memorable night, newlyweds Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe held court in booth No. 52. It's rumored Durant chose to build his desert joint windowless out of a concern for potential drive-by Mob hits and, though the threat of gangland violence has long since passed, diners to this day are still required to enter the restaurant through the kitchen.
