Grey’s Anatomy: Meredith’s Transformation Over The Years (In Pictures) – Screen Rant

Grey's Anatomy fans have watched Meredith's struggles and triumphs for so long, they may not realize just how much she has changed.

Meredith Grey from the hit medical drama Grey's Anatomy has become one of the most iconic television characters for over a decade and a half.

RELATED:Grey's Anatomy 5 Most Likable Characters (& 5 Fans Can't Stand)

Grey's has had an overwhelming spate of ups and downs throughout its run, but it was its central character Meredithwho changed the most over the course of the series. Having started out as a slightly superficial young woman, she went on to become a powerhouse of strength and a brilliant surgeon.

Meredith was first introduced as an attractive young woman just starting out as an intern at Seattle Grace Teaching Hospital. She was a bit green and lost and wasn't entirely sure she had made the right decision with regard to her profession.

She was also a tad whiny, and very selective about the kind of roommates she wanted, being rather obstinate, even to the point of being annoying. She was clearly smitten with McDreamy and had every right to be angry when she found out about his wife, Addison Montgomery-Shepherd, but she lacked the gravityat the time to deal with it more maturely.

Meredith got together with Derek Shepherd and continued to make small strides in her career as she went from being a surgical intern to a resident at the hospital. Her attachmentwith Cristina gradually grewstrongergoing on to become something of a legendary friendship on popular television.

Meredith overcomesher mother's death at this time and settles into her life as a budding surgeon and as the impressive neurosurgeon's girlfriend.

In season 5, Meredith takes a big step when she decides to marry Derek, and true to their style, the two write their marriage vows down on a post-it. The unpretentious wedding speaks to the couple's modest philosophy of life, in spite of Derek being quite well-off himself.

Fans might remember that season 6 ended with Derek being shot and operated on, at gunpoint, by Cristina Yang. Meredith had a major trauma at the time as she saw her husband being almost killed and lost her baby at the same time. In hindsight, this might have been the season she grew up in.

In seasons 7 and 8, Meredith made some crucial choices in her life, when she decided to risk her career and reputation as well as that of Derek's by disrupting the Alzheimer's trial. However, debatable as the step was, it came from a place of deep loyalty and fondness for Richard, the only father figure in Meredith's life.

Meredith and Derek also decided to adopt baby Zola, which was a huge step for them both. This was the time that Meredith went on to take on bigger responsibilities,

Season 8 had ended with the devastating plane crash that caused the death of Meredith's young sister Lexie and Dr. Mark Sloan.

The disaster was one of the biggest tragedies Meredith had seen in her life and she had seen more than her fair share. She pulled it together slowly and managed to turn her life around after the incident, becoming one of the owners of Seattle Grace which then went on to be known as Grey Sloan Memorial, in honor of those who had died in the tragedy. She also had her first baby in this season in complete darkness and managed to pull through despite having a complicated birth.

The tragedy of season 9 had made Meredith stronger somehow and with a heavy heart, she managed to let Cristina go when the latter decided to take a prestigious job in Switzerland.

RELATED:Grey's Anatomy: Why Meredith & Cristina Aren't Real Friends

It would have taken a lot of strength for Meredith to come to terms with losing her best friend, her 'person' who had been by her side through thick and thin.

Season 11 was the most devastating to date for Meredith Grey. Not only did she start having difficulties in her marriage with Derek, and take the decision to stay back in Seattle where she had her own life and career, she lost Derekafter he died in a car accident.

Another episode in her life when Meredith found herself all alone, in spite of having friends who looked out for her, the widowed mother of two gave birth to Derek's posthumousbaby alone. Time stopped for her until she had found the motivation to come back to her old life. With that one incident, Meredith grew a few years in age and maturity.

Meredith went on to struggle with life, now as a single mother of three. She also showed extraordinary power when she was able to forgive the woman, Penny, whom she held somewhat responsible for mishandling her husband's treatment.

She threw herself into work, now one of the most reliable and topsurgeons in the hospital. Every trauma from her past had made her stronger and more mature in life and as a person.

Meredith went on to win the prestigious Harper Avery award, an award her mother Ellis Grey had won twice.

Meredith also tried to move on after Derek's death, finally allowing herself to date other men, whether the dashing new surgeon Nathan Riggs or the handsome new surgical intern Andrew DeLuca.

By season 15 and 16, Meredith has had some of the most amazing surgeries to her credit and had probably saved more lives than she could remember.

Her years of hard work were also validated when all her past patients came to speak up on her behalf during the trial to reinstate her medical license in season 16. Meredith grew steadily more strong and independent over the years, although she still retained her impulsive behavior, when she decided to commit insurance fraud to make life easier for one of her patients, leading to her license being revoked in the first place.

Modelling the Anatomical Distribution of Neurological Events in COVID-19 Patients: A Systematic Review – DocWire News

This article was originally published here

medRxiv. 2020 Oct 23:2020.10.21.20215640. doi: 10.1101/2020.10.21.20215640. Preprint.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Neuropathology caused by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been reported across several studies. The characterisation of the spatial distribution of these pathology remains critical to assess long and short-term neurological sequelae of COVID-19. To this end, Mathematical models can be used to characterise the location and aetiologies underlying COVID-19-related neuropathology.

METHOD: We performed a systematic review of the literature to quantify the locations of small neurological events identified with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) among COVID-19 patients. Neurological events were localised into the Desikan-Killiany grey and white matter atlases. A mathematical network diffusion model was then used to test whether the spatial distribution of neurological events could be explained via a linear spread through the structural connectome of the brain.

FINDINGS: We identified 35 articles consisting of 123 patients that assessed the spatial distribution of small neurological events among COVID-19 patients. Of these, 91 patients had grey matter changes, 95 patients had white matter changes and 72 patients had confirmed cerebral microbleeds. White matter events were observed within 14 of 42 white matter bundles from the IIT atlas. The highest proportions (26%) of events were observed within the bilateral corticospinal tracts. The splenium and middle of the corpus callosum were affected in 14% and 9% of the cases respectively. Grey matter events were spatially distributed in the 41 brain regions within the Desikan-Killiany atlas. The highest proportions (10%) of the events were observed in areas including the bilateral superior temporal, precentral, and lateral occipital cortices. Sub-cortical events were most frequently identified in the Pallidum. The application of a mathematical network diffusion model suggested that the spatial pattern of the small neurological events in COVID-19 can be modelled with a linear diffusion of spread from epicentres in the bilateral cerebellum and basal ganglia (Pearsons r =0.41, p <0.001, corrected).

INTERPRETATION: To our knowledge, this is the first study to systematically characterise the spatial distribution of small neurological events in COVID-19 patients and test whether the spatial distribution of these events can be explained by a linear diffusion spread model. The location of neurological events is consistent with commonly identified neurological symptoms including alterations in conscious state among COVID-19 patients that require brain imaging. Given the prevalence and severity of these manifestations, clinicians should carefully monitor neurological symptoms within COVID-19 patients and their potential long-term sequelae .

UHS announces scholarships in anatomy – The News International

LAHORE:The University of Health Sciences (UHS) on Thursday announced the launching of a gold medal in the name of Andreas Vesalius, the father of modern anatomy.

This gold medal will be awarded each year to the medical student who scores the most in the subject of anatomy. The student will also receive a cash prize of Rs 100,000. Also, three deserving medical students will be awarded scholarships each year in the name of the father of modern anatomy. The announcement was made by UHS Vice Chancellor, Professor Javed Akram, at a seminar which was held here on Thursday to mark World Anatomy Day. The event was organised by the Anatomical Society of Pakistan.

The chief guest of the event, Chairperson Punjab Healthcare Commission Professor Attiya Mubarak Khalid, emphasised on linking the teaching of the subject of anatomy with the clinical training of medical students. UHS VC Professor Javed Akram said that anatomy was the main subject of medical sciences. The teaching of this subject needed to be adapted to modern requirements. He said that every student entering medical college wanted to become a surgeon or a physician. "No student wants to be an anatomist. They need to know that the subject of anatomy is the basis of surgery and medicine", he added. Professor Javed Akram said that there would be no further delay in professional examinations as the Coronavirus had already wasted quite a lot of time of the students.

He clarified that all examinations would be conducted following government SOPs. He informed the participants that the human trial of Coronavirus vaccine from China had started in Pakistan with UHS as an important partner in this trial.

President, Anatomical Society of Pakistan, Professor Nosheen Omar said that due to Covid-19, medical students were given online education and this should be kept in mind while assessing them as well. The event was attended online by 64 groups of anatomists from various medical colleges across the country. Principal, Air Force Medical College Karachi, Professor Masood Ahmed Sheikh, Brigadier Dr Khadija Qamar of Army Medical College Rawalpindi, Professor Saeed Shafi of Shifa Medical College, Dr Zille Huma of Khyber Medical University and Dr Uruj Zehra of UHS addressed the seminar.

Video: ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’ | Anatomy of a Scene – The New York Times

Im Aaron Sorkin, and Im the writer and the director of The Trial of the Chicago 7. Its Abbie. The scene is Abbie Hoffman on the stand. Hes being played by Sacha Baron Cohen. Frank Langella is playing Judge Julius Hoffman. He is either a terrible judge, or in the bag for the prosecution, or experiencing early senility, or some form of the three of those. The lead defense lawyer is Mark Rylance as William Kunstler a civil rights attorney at the time, who became a very well-known civil rights attorney because of this case. Abbie, do you know why youre on trial here? We carried certain ideas across state lines, not machine guns, or drugs, or little girls ideas. Its the final scene of the trial. But whats unusual is that ordinarily the last witness in a trial, thats usually the climactic scene. Somehow a lawyer breaks down that witness, and he explodes in ayou cant handle the truth kind of moment. That scene in this movie actually doesnt happen in the courtroom. It happens during a mock cross-examination that Mark Rylance as William Kunstler conducts against Tom Hayden thats Eddie Redmayne back at their offices where theyve been working. Hes trying to demonstrate to Tom Hayden why Hayden cant take the stand because theyll rip him apart, and he shows him how. That becomes the climactic courtroom scene. And the scene with Abbie on the stand is a kind of coda. Its something weve been waiting for. Its a serious Abbie telling us what he really thinks. [CHUCKLES] So Chicago was just a massive voter registration drive? The cross-examination is being done by the lead prosecutor, Richard Schultz, whos being played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. We know from the beginning of the movie that hes ambivalent about prosecuting these guys. Hes going to do it. Hes going to do it fully because that is his job, and he has been directly ordered to by the new attorney General John Mitchell. But he knows that its a mistake for a number of reasons to do it. So hes a really interesting character. And Joe plays him beautifully. It was a crazy trial. Some of the crazy was bordered on the comic and some of the crazy was tragic. So I wasnt going to try to top all those fireworks with this scene, especially because I knew that I had a final scene coming right after that, which does have a lot of fireworks. So this was going to have to be the opposite. It was going to have to be the opposite of that in the writing of it. It was going to have to be the opposite of that in Sachas performance. And it was going to have to be the opposite of that in how we shot it. It was Sachas big day. And there was still, in some peoples minds, a curiosity as to how Sacha Baron Cohen would play a dramatic scene. On this day, there was a huge crowd watching him do it. Those extras, even when the cameras were pointed away from them, stayed there because they wanted to see Sacha do this. And take after take, he would just get a huge ovation from the crowd. Part of that ovation, by the way, was for Joe Levitt too. But people were really curious about Sachas performance. They were as knocked out by it as I was, and I think the audience will be too. Do you have contempt for your government? Ill tell you, Mr. Schultz, its nothing compared to the contempt my government has for me. The night before he shot it, I sent him an email saying, just a reminder, really the creative success or the failure of the entire movie depends on your performance that youre going to give tomorrow. We can have been great up until that moment, and you still have an opportunity to sink the film with anything less than a great performance. So knock him dead, pal. I was just going to tell him the truth. For real, you cant blow this scene. Weve been trying to make this movie for 14 years. So here its all in your lap [LAUGHS] He had no problem with it at all. Im concerned you have to think about it. Give me a moment, would you friend? Ive never been on trial for my thoughts before.
