ABC Sets 2021 Scripted Series Premiere Dates; ‘The Rookie’ & ‘Call Your Mother’ Join Schedule, ‘Grey’s’-Led Thursday Returns In March, ‘Black-ish’…

ABC has firmed up its midseason schedule, setting up early 2021 premiere dates for its scripted series. That includes ABCs returning scripted series and new comedy Call Your Mother, starring Kyra Sedgwick.

Call Your Mother and The Rookie, which were originally on ABCs fall schedule before being pushed, are slated in their previously designated slots, Wednesday 9:30 PM behind The Conners, and Sunday at 10 PM, respectively.

As ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke indicated in May, Black-ish, joined by spinoff Mixed-ish, will be back in the Tuesday 9-10 PM hour starting in January. The Tuesday 8-10 PM block was temporary taken over by The Bachelorette this fall as the summer staples season was delayed by the pandemic. Black-ish, originally left on the bench for midseason, was subsequently summoned back for a fall run on Wednesdays.

On Tuesday, Black-ish and Mixed-ish will follow To Tell the Truth; The Rookie, whose return was delayed because of a later production restart, will again follow American Idol.

ABCs third new scripted series, drama Rebel, headlined by Katey Sagal, was only picked up in September, so it will be scheduled later. It comes from Greys Anatomy and Station 19 showrunner Krista Vernoff.

The two Vernoff-run series, along with Thursday companion A Million Little Things, will be back after a winter break on March 3. This is the latest ever that Greys has kicked off its midseason run, but the ongoing pandemic has been forcing a lot of scheduling changes. The rest of ABCs scripted series will resume airing originals in January, including The Good Doctor, airing behind The Bachelor.

Serving as a bridge on Thursday while the scripted lineup is resting are reality series Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, The Chase and The Hustler.

Here are ABCs early 2021 scripted premiere dates. New shows are in bold.

Debbie Allen Reveals the Real Reason Why ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Has Been Such a Success – Parade

Dance Dreams: Hot Chocolate Nutcracker (Nov. 27 on Netflix) provides a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the life and career of Greys Anatomy star and Emmy-winning choreographer Debbie Allen, 70. The documentary shines a spotlight on the Debbie Allen Dance Academy (DADA) as she prepares young dancers for her reimagined holiday production of The Nutcracker.

Why produce your own version of The Nutcracker?

I looked at the origins of The Nutcracker in the U.S. and [how choreographer] George Balanchine was trying to keep the New York City Ballet alive. So I decided to do my version and make it fun and funny.

What do students at your dance academy learn other than dance?

My own sense of discipline, completion, ability to take criticism and go the distance come out of my dance training. They are a byproduct of studying the performing arts. The creative instinct is nurtured, discipline is nurtured by learning to be part of a groupbecause if you do a great leap, someone has to catch you.

Youre an executive producer, star and director on Greys Anatomy. Why has that show endured?

Its about real people and real relationships. It happens to be in a hospital, which has inspired millions of young people to go into the medical profession, especially women. But at the end of the day, its about falling in love, falling out of love, betrayals, competitions. The people on our show ring so true.

Did you have big dreams as a child?

I spent a lot of time in my backyard in Houston looking up at the stars. Contemplating the universe when I was a little girl, I always saw myself in it, so that was always a big picture. Always.

What inspired you to reinvent The Nutcracker with rats instead of the Mouse King?

Everybody grows up with The Nutcracker. It was something that I dreamed about when I was a little kid and there were no productions that had Black kids in Houston. I remember doing Welcome to Flowerland as part of a church thing, and I participated in a lot of different Nutcrackers.

One day I took my son Thumpety [Norm Nixon Jr.], my niece Condola Rashad and my daughter, Vivian, to The Nutcracker downtown. And right in the middle of the show, Thumpety, my son, was just bored to death. He was just like, Uugghh. He couldnt have been more than about 4 or 5 years old, and he screamed out loud right in the middle of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, When is the rat coming?! And the audience howled. Oh, my God, they laughed. I was so embarrassed, but it was so cute. And I realized they wanted to see a rat; he didnt want to see the Mouse King.

This is a family affair. Your husband and daughter are involved, and your son was the inspiration. Was it hard to rope them in?

It has its challenges because everybody has their own ideas. Theyve grown up with me. Theyve been on the plane when I went to London to do Carrie. Theyve been with me everywhere Ive gone, including when I went to China as cultural ambassador [of dance] for the United States. They have always been a part of my life.

Youre going to be remembered for your roles, your directing and producing, and choreography, but Hot Chocolate Nutcracker will introduce people to this other side of you, which is opening doors for people of color in the dance world. Youll be remembered also by the children whose lives that you touch.

I call them my DADA diaspora, because now were 20 years old and they are everywhere. My kids are everywhere and doing such wonderful things. Improving the quality of life for people in their community, sharing their gifts, inspiring other young people to do what they have done through their learning, creating nonprofits.

DADA provides life lessons every day. It trains them to be ready to get out in the world, be adults, and be the ones that create opportunity or make decisions. Everything that were teaching is really developing their humanity.

On Nov. 14 we celebrated our 20th anniversary in the parking lot of the Rose Bowl, and the real focus of this celebration was those kids, who they are, where they are, and what theyre doing. I cant even do them all, theres so many of them. Theyre in some of the best universities, full-scholarship students, dancing with great companies, in television series, creating nonprofits, doing programming to help women who are battered and abused. Theyre doing all of these wonderful things.

It feels like I have birthed another nation, if you will, another generation along with my own kids. And thats something that I take very seriously, and Im still doing it every day.

In the time of coronavirus, obviously, you wont be doing a production this year, which is your big fundraiser to provide scholarships for some of your DADA students. So how will you keep going?

Well, first of all, we responded to this metamorphosis, if you will, this evolution of the virtual world. So many dance schools have closed, so many performing arts centers are closed, and we know the theaters are dark and the concert world. Film and television are just now getting back up to producing, and a lot of those productions have also shut down again when they didnt have the right COVID protocols.

So I was adamant that, OK, weve got to shut the doors, but were not shutting down. I started teaching my live Instagram class and I just did it as a gift. And then I realized thousands of people were taking the class, so I did it every week. Ive been doing it since March every Wednesday at one oclock. And Saturday I started a class for the younger ones because its turned into a whole other thing.

But how do we survive this as the academy? The fundraiser, the drive-in gala at the Rose Bowl parking lot, was a big deal for us with people at a drive-in in their cars having a live experience with people they quarantine with, so its safe. But we are indebted to the foundations and people that support us.

Wallis Annenberg and the Annenberg Foundation have supported DADA for I would say the better part of almost 20 years, and the Berry Gordy Family Foundation, and the David Kobrin Foundation. Recently, were getting grants because were in the middle of a capital campaign. This couldnt be a worse time to be trying to build a building, but were moving forward. We have to. We have to because we know the doors are going to open and were going to be ready to take the kids back in.

People see what we do. They see that its all going to the kids. Its all going to what its supposed to be. For 20 years, we had a really great record of what we do, and right now the kids need it more than ever. Can you imagine how exhausted they are from Zoom classes and virtual everything? So when we have a Zoom class and its live, thats something. And we have very small classes at the studio. We used to have a studio with 30 to 40 kids, we cant do that anymore. Some classes are four, five kids.

Between DADA and Greys, your dance card is pretty full, but last season you guest starred as Shemar Moores mother on S.W.A.T. Any chance that youll be back this season?

They shoot on Saturdays, actually, so Im waiting to get that call from Shemar. Debbie, come on. I need you to come back. And when he calls, Ill try to figure it out. Everybodys under such strict protocols and testing. Any show thats really working is kind of OK. But I had a good time being his mom. He is such a lovely man in real life and has such a big heart about the world, and is so wanting his show to reflect what is happening in the world right now.

Who do you credit for the success story that is your life and the barriers you have broken?

I have to credit my mother, Vivian Ayers Allen, because she raised usme, Phylicia [Rashad], Tex and my baby brother, Huey, who came much later. She really instilled in us a sense that we are children of the universe and that there were no borders and no boundaries in the real world. We got a sense of that when she took us to Mexico. It was the first time we could go to a lunch counter and have lunch because it wasnt segregated.

My mother instilled in us a sense of space, and creativity, and productivity, and that we were born to go and do something. Its no surprise Phylicias as successful as she is, and me, and my brother Tex, and my brother Hueys a successful banker. Thank God somebody can write a check.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Does the Cast Get Along With Katherine Heigl Now? – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Greys Anatomy has seen a lot of characters come and go. Some of the actors and actresses like Sandrah Oh, who played Cristina Yang, are lucky enough to leave on their own accord. While some, like Katherine Heigl, leave under much murkier circumstances. Heigls exit shook fans of the show and she became infamous for being hard to work with. But has the cast of the show forgiven Heigl for her behavior?

Drama with Heigl, who played Isobel Stevens, started when she pulled herself out of the running for an Emmy nomination for her work on Greys.

I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention, she said in a statement. In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials.

She made her final appearance on the show in Jan. 2010, during the shows sixth season.

At the time of the drama, Heigls character had become a focal point in the series. Izzie Stevens relationship with Alex Karev was one of the main romances on the show so when Heigl left, the writers had to figure out what to do with Karev.

When word comes down that an actor is leaving the show, and what youve got scripted is a wedding, showrunner Krista Vernofftold Variety.

Katies departure changed the course of the Alex-Izzie love story quite abruptly. One of the things about working in television and being a TV writer is you have to be able to pivot. You dont have to love pivoting, but youd better be willing to throw everything out and work through the night on a completely different story at the 11th hour.

Heigl famously feuded with Isaiah Washington, who played Dr. Preston Burke, after she claimed that he had made a homophobic remark toward their co-star T.R. Knight.

When Washington addressed the situation, Heigl famously said that he needed to just not speak in public.

According to Entertainment Tonight, after the incident, Washington wrote an apology and shot a PSA for GLAAD.

Washington recently came for Heigl by tweeting a photo of her, stating This woman once proclaimed that I should never be allowed to speak publicly again. The world agreed with her proclamation back then and protested for my job and my head in 65 languages. I wish I was on Twitter in 2007, because I will NEVER stop exercising my free speech.

So, it doesnt seem as if Washington has let the feud go.

In 2014, show creator Shonda Rhimes also threw a little shade at Heigl while discussing the fact that she would not be allowing any drama to take place on the set ofScandal.

There are no Heigls in this situation, she toldThe Hollywood Reporter of the Scandal cast. I dont put up with bullsh** or nasty people. I dont have time for it.

The anatomy of smoking: How tobacco affects your body – OnFocus

WAUSAU, Wis. If you are a smoker, you probably know you should stop. That is a good start toward quitting, but you need a powerful motivator to follow through. Knowing the truth about how smoking harms your health may be what it takes.

Its never too late to put the ex in front of smoker, said Aspirus Respiratory Therapist Sarah Schroeder. Quitting smoking will reduce your risk of infections like colds, the flu, bronchitis and pneumonia.

An alarming fact is that smoking affects nearly every part of your body, including your:

Airways. Delicate tissues in your lungs become inflamed because of smoking. This can lead to serious disorders, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Smoking can also cause cancer to develop in your lungs, throat, and mouth.

Heart. Smoking harms the cells lining the blood vessels and heart and can increase the risk of clots that cause heart attacks. Smoking can also contribute to an abdominal aortic aneurysmthe weakening of the major artery near the stomach.

Other blood vessels. Damage to vessel linings can cause them to narrow, restricting blood flow to the kidneys, stomach, arms, legs, and feet. This can lead to a range of problems, including pain and gangrene.

Brain. Blood clots that form in damaged arteries can travel to your brain and cause potentially fatal strokes.

Bones and tendons. Smoking increases the risk for osteoporosisweak bonesand fractures in both men and women. Overuse injuries, such as tendinitis, and traumatic injuries, such as sprains, are also more likely among smokers, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

Immune system. Smokers have smaller amounts than nonsmokers of some types of cells that destroy germs. That leaves you more vulnerable to infections.

In addition, smoking can cause cancer of the pancreas, kidneys, cervix, and stomach. It also can cause leukemia, which is cancer of the blood. And smoking increases your risk for eye diseases and dental problems.

Women who smoke tend to have more complications with pregnancy, including premature births, low-birth-weight babies, and stillbirths. And their babies are more likely to die of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) than babies whose mothers do not smoke.

Turn your risks around

There is another list that is much more encouragingthe benefits of giving up smoking. Check it out, along with the American Cancer Societys guide to quitting smoking, at morehealth.org/quit4good.

By quitting, your health risks decrease immediately and continue to diminish over time, no matter how long you have smoked. A tobacco Quitline can also help you quit for good. Call 800-QUIT-NOW (800-784-8669).

Once you quit smoking, you will have more energy and feel healthier, Schroeder said. Dont put off quitting. Ask for help.

Anatomy of a Play: Xavien Howard clicks, drives and picks off Justin Herbert – Touchdown Wire

The Miami Dolphins are the hottest team in football.

This is not a reference to the weather in South Beach. No, the Dolphins are legit. Winners of five-straight games, the Dolphins are getting tremendous contributions from their defense and rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is showing what he can be as a professional passer.

A ton of credit must be given to head coach Brian Flores and what he is building on both sides of the football, particularly on defense. The Dolphins are confusing opposing quarterbacks, bringing pressure with some different personnel packages, and making opposing offensive coordinators burn the midnight oil to try and figure out what to expect on Sundays.

This Xavien Howard interception of Justin Herbert is an example of that in action.

It is also an example of teaching tape when it comes to playing zone coverage as a cornerback:

The Dolphins are playoff contenders, and their defense is a big reason why.

Patrick Dempsey Just Confirmed That Fan Theory About Meredith On "Grey’s Anatomy" – BuzzFeed

WARNING: This post contains spoilers for the current season of Grey's Anatomy. Anyone who watched last week's Grey's Anatomy season 17 premiere was hit by a wild twist: the return of Derek (Patrick Dempsey), who died back in season 11. Derek only showed up after Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) passed out in the hospital's parking lot and during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (via Us Weekly) Dempsey confirmed that the dreamlike sequence was a result of Meredith having contracted COVID-19. I was like, what a great opportunity for people and how great it would be for the fans, really, to see everybody reunited in this sort of bizarre way, he said. Randy Holmes / Getty Images And [showrunner Krista Vernoff] came up with this concept where I would come and visit [Meredith] in her COVID dream. Picture Alliance / dpa / picture alliance via Getty Images Wait what? That's right: Dempsey just confirmed what you might have been suspecting. Meredith Grey has COVID-19. Although Dempsey's already spilled the beans on what's really going on with his return, he's not so loose-lipped on how many more episodes he'll appear in: Thats a good question. Im not sure how many [episodes]. I know Im throughout the season. He comes back to visit." Arnold Jerocki / Getty Images We can only guess what happens next but, if you're a Grey's stan, you're used to that. BuzzFeed Daily
