Jupiter Orphan Therapeutics Announces First Patient Dosed in Phase I Dose Escalation Study of JOTROL – PRNewswire

JUPITER, Fla., Jan. 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/ --Jupiter Orphan Therapeutics, Inc. ("JOT") a biotechnology company pioneering a novel and disease modifying product named JOTROL, today announced that the first patient has been dosed in a Phase I dose escalation study of JOTROL. The Phase I is conducted with healthy volunteers in various ages and include a food effect arm. Per protocol, the first patient cohort has been dosed and the study is continuing in January and February of 2021. Top line data is expected to be available in March 2021. The initial dose appear well-tolerated as the escalation continues toward clinically relevant doses. JOTROL is, through its unique bioavailability, the first and only resveratrol product that can deliver a therapeutically effective dose without causing any severe gastro-intestinal side effects. JOTROL is a platform product that is expected to be an effective treatment in many rare diseases such as ataxias, lysosomal storage disorders and mitochondrial diseases. Building on the positive scientific review and funding from NIA JOT is also in preparation of a Phase II trial for treatment of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI).

"We have been able to move the Phase I trial forward very quickly after we received funding from the NIA, $1.76 M, and equity investors, $1.2 M, by setting up clinical material manufacturing through Catalent Pharma Solutions and contracting with Syneos Health Phase I unit in Miami, Florida. We are assuming positive Phase I results, which will be a Proof Of Concept of our product and have started preparations for Phase II trials in MPS-1, Friedreich's ataxia and MELAS in addition to MCI study preparation. We have presently cash covering us through 2021 and are targeting additional financing through an equity raise, possible partnering as well as utilizing non-dilutive funding sources to be able to start several Phase II trials later in 2021," stated Christer Rosn, Chairman and CEO.

"I am very pleased with our progress and excited to be designing efficacy trials in several diseases. Key benefits of a platform product like JOTROL is that the Phase I trial results can be cross-referenced for any Phase II trials involving JOTROL contributing to a very fast and cost-effective way of achieving Phase II study results. There are already human trials executed with nutritional grade resveratrol in several diseases that have shown benefits, although with GI tolerability issues, that gives us confidence for successful outcomes in multiple diseases. With financing in place, we may have positive clinical results already by mid 2022," stated Marshall Hayward, CSO.

Worried about your blood sugar and diabetes? Add peanuts to your daily diet. – Houston Chronicle

If Im working with a patient or client who incorporates snacks into their daily fueling routine, one of the most frequent go-to snack choices I hear are peanuts or another member of the nut family, such as almonds or cashews. Strategic snacking between meals is one of the best ways to promote appetite management, improve daily nutrition intake and manage energy levels, which strongly correlate with blood sugar levels. Pairing certain foods and nutrients can help stabilize blood sugar, leading to steady energy levels, rather than distracting highs and lows. This is where peanuts come in.

Glycemic index is a value used to quantify the amount that a given food raises blood sugar levels. The values range from 0-100, with lower values indicating less robust blood sugar responses and higher values indicating a significant increase in blood sugar. One serving of a cereal such as corn flakes has a high GI of 81, whereas one serving of soy beans has a GI of approximately 16. Peanuts measure even lower at 14, which means they can help prevent spikes in blood sugar and contribute to a slower and steadier increase in energy. For Type 1 and insulin-dependent Type 2 diabetics, this translates to reduced insulin needs.

Recently, research has shown that the consumption of peanuts and peanut butter can be an effective strategy to stabilize blood sugar and in turn prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes for those with prediabetes, as well as those with a heightened risk from factors including chronically high blood sugar values and thus drastic fluctuations in energy levels.

A study published in 2018 in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that women who consumed peanut butter five times a week reduced their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 21 percent. Additionally, in 2019, the Journal of American Nutrition published research exploring the effect of peanut butter on blood sugar when added to a meal with a high glycemic load. Results showed that the subsequent blood sugar response was significantly lower than when peanut butter was not included in the meal.

The magic lies in the nutrient composition of a peanut, which is low in carbohydrate and high in unsaturated fat. One handful of peanuts also delivers 7 grams of plant-based protein in conjunction with fiber. Thats more plant-based protein than any other nut, with more protein per serving than half a cup of chickpeas. When eating a meal or snack high in carbohydrate or with a high ability to raise your blood sugar, simultaneously consuming foods rich in protein or unsaturated fat adds balance to your blood sugar. Peanuts are an excellent choice, and for this reason some scientists call peanuts a superfood. In addition to protein and healthful fats, peanuts contain 19 micronutrients, including niacin, vitamin E and manganese, which function as antioxidants and contribute to overall health.

Speaking of antioxidants, they can improve vascular function and biomarkers such as blood lipids and cholesterol. Peanuts are a significant source of resveratrol, a nutrient that has recently received increased attention because of its antioxidant capacity. Resveratrol, which is found in grapes and red wine, can open blood vessels and improve blood flow. Peanut butter is very close to grape juice in terms of resveratrol content. If youre trying to up your antioxidant intake, opt for peanut butter, which has three times the reservatrol as roasted peanuts. A study examining bloodwork in response to an evening snack demonstrated that consuming 1 serving of peanuts before bed can reduce blood triglyceride levels. No wonder the World Health Organization and U.S. Department of Agriculture both recommend eating nuts daily.

Despite strong data to support the inclusion of peanuts and/or peanut butter as part of our daily nutrition intake, many shy away from nuts because of the perception that theyre fattening. Almost every day, a patient will tell me they eat peanuts for a snack, and then follow up with I know thats bad! or cringe with guilt. Though peanuts are high in fat, the type of fat found in nuts is the more healthful, protective, unsaturated kind that provides wonderful health benefits. Consumption in moderate amounts has been shown to have no effect on body weight and might even help the body burn more energy.

Other forms of nuts and nut butters provide generally similar nutrition benefits, with a few minute nuances. Peanuts and peanut butter can be a cost-friendly addition to your daily fueling routine. Peanuts can improve blood sugar management, energy levels, cardiovascular markers, stimulate satiety and help regulate appetite. Instead of avoiding this nutrient-dense food, pack on the peanuts!

The goodness of grapes – The New Times

Grapes are berries and the earliest domesticated fruit crop, which is cultivated for use as a fruit, in juices, jams, jellies, pies, and wines.

They are green, red or blue-black. Some grapes are seedless, while others have seeds, some of which are edible.

Although grapes are not locally grown, they are imported and one can access them in some local supermarkets such as Simba Supermarket in town, New Frulep next to Rwandex.

The benefits

Studies show that only one cup of grapes provides about a quarter of ones daily vitamin C needs, nearly 20 per cent for vitamin K, and at least 10 per cent for copper.

In addition to supporting immunity, vitamin C is needed for DNA repair.

Joseph Uwiragiye, the head of the nutrition department at University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK), says vitamin C also significantly boosts the absorption of iron from plant foods.

He says that a higher blood level of vitamin C is tied to increase fat burning, both during exercise and at rest. Vitamin K is required for bone formation, and a shortfall is linked to increased fracture risk.

The copper in grapes, he says, plays a role in energy production, plus the formation of collagen and red blood cells. Grapes also provide smaller amounts of several key nutrients, including B vitamins, potassium, and manganese.

In addition to the vitamins C and A presence which is vital for immunity, Uwiragiye says grapes support the immune system through their natural anti-microbial properties.

A one-cup portion also supplies about two and a half ounces of water, which is important for hydration, circulation and healthy blood flow, and waste elimination.

Grapes contain lutein and zeaxanthin, which have been known to protect the retina and eye lens.

Theyve been shown to increase visual range, lessen discomfort from glare, enhance visual contrast, and reduce the time it takes the eyes to recover from the strain of bright lights.

Grapes also help lower the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts, two common eye disorders.

For people trying to lose some weight due to certain conditions, or just for fitness, Uwiragiye says consuming grapes can help with weight loss or management.

He explains that this is so because grapes are a low-calorie, fat-free food with a low glycaemic index. These vine-growing goodies also contain compounds with antioxidant properties.

One of them, he says, is resveratrol which is thought to trigger certain reactions that may improve energy metabolism.

Emmy Ntamanga, a Kigali-based consultant, says eating grapes can also help rejuvenate the skin. He explains that this is because grapes are filled with vitamin C and antioxidants which revitalise the skin.

In fact, he says, they can even protect ones skin from cancer-causing ultraviolet radiation and free radicals that can, on a lesser scale, cause wrinkles and dark spots.

Also, the added vitamin C is necessary for the skin to form collagen, which helps give the face a youthful firmness.

For a healthy snack, Uwiragiye says grape is the best option as it helps boosts ones energy.

He explains that the complex carbohydrates found in grapes can give one a much-needed energy boost.

Also, when it comes to cardiovascular health, grapes are overachievers. Some compounds in grapes can help regulate blood pressure, reduce inflammation from oxidative stress, improve blood flow, and protect your vascular system.

Nutritionists say that the manganese found in grapes is a health benefit that helps to strengthen the bones.

Manganese is a mineral already occurring in our bodies in small amounts. It contributes to healthy bones (by allowing your body to better absorb calcium and also creating essential enzymes to build bones).

The best anti-aging vitamins and supplements, according to a registered dietician – Insider – INSIDER

Getting older is a fact of life. As you age, you might see more wrinkles or your hair turning gray.

While there's no way to turn back time, Trista Best, RD, LD, a registered dietitian at Balance One Supplements, says that some vitamins may slow premature aging.

Some vitamins have anti-aging properties the ability to delay the biology of the aging process.

Scott Antoine, DO, physician and owner of The Center for Fully Functional Health, says that vitamins can help slow the aging process through their ability to overcome toxins that accumulate in the body over time.

"Oxidation is a process in your body where you build up reactive oxygen metabolites over many years, and they are damaging to your body. Also, as you age, your immune system becomes less active. Fortunately, vitamins and minerals work with the immune system and have antioxidative properties to lower the risk of age-related disease," Antoine tells Insider.

Here's a list of vitamins that have anti-aging properties.

While there are many vitamins on the market, Best tells Insider that the most effective ones are those that work to counteract the damage caused by oxidative stress. A majority of vitamins can be obtained through your diet or a supplement.

Aging doesn't just produce cosmetic effects. The World Health Organization reports that aging is also associated with severe health conditions such as osteoarthritis, diabetes, and dementia. For this reason, Antoine recommends increasing vitamin D and vitamin E levels, which can affect immune function.

"Chronic, low-level inflammation causes oxidative stress in the body that leads to many chronic conditions common to Western nations. Antioxidants stimulate the immune system and are responsible for reducing inflammation," says Best. Curcumin, resveratrol, and CoQ10 are popular anti-aging antioxidants.

While there are many vitamins essential for a healthy body, Best recommends fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin D, E, and K, which impact the skin's health most directly for maintaining a youthful appearance.
