All 56 victims of the new virus died in China, but the number of cases has already exceeded 2 thousand persons around the world.

Are we closer to being able to print a functioning artificial ovary? – Medical News Bulletin

Approximately one in six female cancer survivors suffer from early menopause due to the serious side-effects of chemotherapy. Clinically known as premature ovarian insufficiency, this condition manifests as an inability of the ovaries to release eggs and the female sex hormone estrogen. Early menopause has long-term effects beyond fertility issues such as osteoporosis, low thyroid function, and increased risk of heart disease.

Scientists at Northwestern University, U.S., have worked on a possible solution to this probleman artificial ovary. Dr. Monica Laronda and her team at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine have been working on developing an artificial ovary. In 2017, they implanted a functional 3-D printed artificial ovary in a sterile mouse that was then able to become pregnant and had live pups. Building on this groundbreaking work, Dr. Laronda and her team have taken a major step forward towards translating this technique for human use in the future. They have identified and mapped proteins in the pig ovary that form the scaffold for the different compartments within the ovary, similar to compartments found in the human ovary. Identifying and mapping these structural proteins are the first step towards developing a bio-ink or suitable biological material that can be used to 3-D print a bioprosthetic ovary for human use. The results of their latest work were recently published in Scientific Reports.

A major challenge in the field of bioprinting is the development of suitable biomaterials that can mimic the structure and functions of tissues and organs. This is especially true in the case of complex organs such as the ovaries that are comprised of different compartments with distinct functions. The human ovary is divided into two distinct compartments: the cortex that contains the immature follicles, which are maintained in a quiescent state, and the medulla that contains and supports the growing follicles. The ovarian follicle responds to molecular signals such as hormones as well as physical stress, to mature and eventually ovulate, releasing the single egg contained in the follicle.

It is hypothesized that the extracellular matrix plays a major role in the follicles remaining dormant or being activated into maturation. For instance, in mouse ovaries, physical compression of the primordial follicles in the cortex is necessary to maintain them in a quiescent state. Thus the work carried out by Dr. Laronda in identifying and mapping the structural proteins that make up the extracellular matrix is a key step towards being able to construct a functional artificial ovary for human use. As Dr. Laronda remarked in a recent press release, Our goal is to use the ovarian structural proteins to engineer a biological scaffold capable of supporting a bank of potential eggs and hormone-producing cells. Once implanted, the artificial ovary would respond to natural cues for ovulation, enabling pregnancy.

The technique developed by these researchers to process, identify, and map structural proteins in the extracellular matrix can be extended to study other organs and hence improve bioengineering methods involved in tissue regeneration or bioprinting. Dr. Laronda says, We have developed a pipeline for identifying and mapping scaffold proteins at the organ level. It is the first time that this has been accomplished and we hope it will spur further research into the microenvironment of other organs.

While there is a long way to go before we can print a functioning ovary for human use, the work presented in this report is a huge step forward for girls who undergo fertility-damaging cancer treatments.

Unlike current fossil fuel based energy production systems fuel cells offer a clean and efficient way to generate electricity with water and heat the only waste products.

The drawback? Current fuel cell technology relies on high value and scarce metals such as platinum to act as a catalyst and speed up reactions in the fuel cell.

If such metals can be removed from the process, the potential for fuel cells to form part of the solution to climate change and energy storage challenges are impressive, as they could provide power for large and small scale systems from power stations to laptop computers.

Scientists have long looked at the potential for carbon nanostructures to take the place of platinum, and other metals, in fuel cells, while maintaining performance.

In the journal SMALL a team from Trinity College and AMBER led by Prof Paula Colavita and Prof Max Garca-Melchor have provided a roadmap for carbon material design to enable the next generation of metal-free fuel cell catalysts.

Speaking about the research, which features on the front cover of the SMALL, Prof Colavita said: Our findings offer a new vision of cooperativity among different properties of carbon materials that must be met to lower the cost of fuel cells.

Together with Prof Garcia-Melchor, we have identified important design principles for the next generation of smart carbons to enable an expansion of technologies based on renewables sources.

Prof Garca-Melchor said: We believe these new insights may open up new avenues to leverage synergistic effects improving performance and allowing us to push the limits of carbon nanomaterials to outperform the state-of-the-art catalysts based on precious metals.

The research was conducted by the School of Chemistry, Trinity College Dublin, in conjunction with School of Physics, Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Trinity College Dublin, and the Faculty of Physics, University of Bucharest, Romania.

West Side Student Firefighter of the Year | Gorge Life – Hood River News

Corbett Blackman, a senior at Hood River Valley High School, has been awarded West Side Fire Departments Student Firefighter of the Year award. This is the second time hes received the distinction.

He will be recognized at the firehouses annual awards ceremony in February.

Blackman is president of the HRVHS student firefighters club and has been a student firefighter since his sophomore year. Students must be 16 years old and have their drivers license before theyre able to volunteer.

My mom is an ER doctor in The Dalles, he said, and Ive always been exposed to first responder/ER life. Its always been interesting to me.

The award is based on criteria such as participation in calls, he said.

Student firefighters can go on all of the calls the fire department gets aside from calls on I-84, he explained. Most of the calls we get are medical not as many are fire. We get everything from public lift assists to fully involved structure fires.

Students are not allowed to leave school to respond to calls; they are additionally not allowed to respond to any calls that happen at the high school.

Blackman earned his Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification last winter and is now allowed to more fully participate in calls.

Starting off, especially my first year when I hadnt taken any classes, it was more of a bystander role, watch and learn and observe, he said. As you participate more, you learn more and are able to start helping more in calls, instead of being there as extra manpower.

As president of the student firefighters club, he leads meetings twice a month during school hours. All student firefighters in the area including those with WyEast, Parkdale and Cascade Locks are members and participate in various fieldtrips and practice burns with advisers.

Last year, students went to Portland to tour and ride a fireboat. This past fall, they participated in a practice burn that included drills and pulling a house line (setting up and charging a hose and then spraying).

He sees his service as a student firefighter as a way to give back to the community.

It can be very rewarding when you run a call successfully, Blackman said. And usually, when we see people, its one of the worst days of their lives, so helping them can be extremely rewarding when we do a good job.

HRV Club Adviser Wendy Herman is grateful to all of the fire departments for hosting and working with student firefighters as well as the students who volunteer in this capacity.

Its a great group of kids who volunteer their time to be part of the fire departments, she said.

Blackman additionally participates on HRV swim, water polo and track and field teams he was part of the boys varsity water polo team that took a first-ever first place state champion title in 2019 as well as a member of the schools First Robotics Challenge (FRC) robotics team, competing at the Worlds robotics tournament, held in Houston, for the past two years with teammates on A105 Annex.

He plans to attend Montana State University next fall and major in either mechanical engineering or bioengineering; if he goes the bioengineering route, he will continue on to med school with the goal of becoming an ER doctor.
