U. Forward Fest to engage community on research and development for the future – The Daily Princetonian

On Oct. 23 and 24, the University will kick off its first monthly Forward Fest event, featuring high-level administrators and accomplished faculty members who work in innovation, as well as alumni hosts and moderators.

According to a press release, the online series, which will continue throughout the year, aims to spark dialogue across the global University community to engage with and explore big ideas and their infinite possibilities for shaping the future.

The Forward Fest speakers, or Forward Thinkers, are drawn from a variety of disciplines. Their presentations will discuss how their research and approaches have pivoted to analyze and address urgent contemporary issues.

The first half of the inaugural Forward Fest will take place on Friday, Oct. 23, at 8:00 p.m. EDT. President Christopher Eisgruber 83, Provost Deborah Prentice, and a number of other administrators are slated to speak on what is to come in A Year of Forward Thinking and how the University community can engage with topics such as public health and bioengineering with an orientation towards the future.

One of the featured administrators, Dean of Engineering and Applied Science Andrea Goldsmith, wrote in an email to the The Daily Princetonian that she will discuss plans to significantly grow our engineering faculty and to build a new neighborhood for the school that will foster collaboration within engineering and across all of Princeton.

I also plan to discuss our vision to launch interdisciplinary initiatives in bioengineering, quantum computing, robotics, smart cities, and data science, Goldsmith wrote. Advances in these topics will enhance health and medicine, spur new computing paradigms, improve the efficiency and robustness of our infrastructure, and mitigate climate change and energy shortages.

The second day of the event will take place on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. EDT and feature three panels of faculty members on the subjects of public health, social justice, and the U.S. election, respectively.

History professor Kevin Kruse, who will participate in the election panel, said the discussions aim to serve community members in an email to the Prince.

Forward Fest was designed to focus attention on the in service part of the Universitys mission, and the webinar on the 2020 election is designed to be a service to students, faculty, alumni and others who have questions and concerns about this pivotal moment, Kruse wrote.

Kruse added that hell be providing context about a few key issues people have been talking about these past few months voting rights and voter suppression, possible reforms to the Electoral College, Congress, and the Supreme Court, and generally how this election compares to past ones.

Professor of computer science Andrew Appel 81, another faculty member on the election panel, plans to focus on the technology of how we vote, and how its inaccuracy, insecurity, and outright hackability can alter the outcome of elections, he wrote in an email to the Prince.

[M]ost (but not all) jurisdictions vote on technology that is accurate and is securable though not for the reasons you might think and now we should pay attention to the audits and procedures that would make our voting systems truly secure and trustworthy, Appel added.

Forward Fest is part of A Year of Forward Thinking, the Universitys recently-announced community engagement campaign.

Forward Fest events are free and open to the public. All programming will be livestreamed on the Forward Fest website and the Universitys YouTube channel.

Amy Orsborn is a Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor in Electrical & Computer Engineering and Bioengineering at the University of Washington. She works at the intersection of engineering and neuroscience to develop therapeutic neural interfaces to restore motor function. Her lab explores neural interfaces as adaptive closed-loop systems that engage plasticity in the brain and spinal cord. She designs engineering approaches that shape neural adaptation to improve system performance, and uses neural interfaces as a tool to study brain learning. The lab also specializes in system integration for advancing neurotechnologies to study large-scale neural circuits in non-human primates towards clinically-translatable technologies. Among her honors, she received a LOreal USA for Women in Science postdoctoral award, the LOreal USA Changing The Face of STEM award, a Google Faculty Research Award, and is an Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation Engineering research fellow. She completed her Ph.D. at the UC Berkeley/UCSF Joint Graduate Program in Bioengineering, and was a postdoctoral researcher at NYUs Center for Neural Science.

Paul Tullis is a journalist specializing in long form pieces for national magazines. He has written about science, technology, commerce, and their intersections for The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Bloomberg Businessweek, Scientific American, Nature, Wired, and others. Most recently, he published his article The brain-computer interface is coming, and we are so not ready for it in the Bulletin exploring the potential advances and pitfalls of merging the human mind with a computer one. Paul received his BA from the University of California, Berkeley and currently lives in Amsterdam.

Dawn Sinclair Shapiro is a filmmaker and journalist. She works in the space between truth and fact to tell stories and create films that meet journalistic standards. After studying Political Science at Temple University, Dawn began her journalism career working for CBS Sunday Morning. She subsequently worked as a producer and writer at Tribune Broadcasting, CNBC, MSNBC, and Dateline NBC. As a producer for NBC Interactive Media, Dawn worked on Everest Assault 96, editing and maintaining Sandy Hill Pittmans daily webcast. Her third feature-length documentary, The State of Eugenics (2017) PBS REEL SOUTH, tells the story of how North Carolina overcame partisanship and delivered justice to sterilization abuse survivors. Previously, she directed, produced and wrote the PBS documentary, Inside the Handy Writers Colony, and The Edge of Joy, a film documenting maternal health in Nigeria, which The Economist Film Project selected as its debut film. Dawn was awarded a production grant from the MacArthur Foundation for The Edge of Joy, and in 2011, she was honored with the Nafis Sadik Award for Courage from Rotary International.

Science in Vermont: Restore the shore | Local News – Rutland Herald

The United Nations Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services recently published a worldwide report demonstrating that the natural world is declining globally at rates unprecedented in human history. The report shows that 75% of all ice-free land has been significantly altered by human activity, and almost 90% of global wetlands have been lost. Worse, more than two thirds of populations of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, and reptiles have become threatened in the last 50 years.

However, the report also says that well planned conservation efforts can protect habitat and ecosystems. Signs of conservation efforts making a difference are scattered across the Vermont landscape. One example lies on the shores of Lake Bomoseen. Thanks to community members, town officials, and state agencies including the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation and the Vermont Agency of Transportation, lake restoration projects on Lake Bomoseen in Castleton and Lake Raponda in Wilmington stabilized eroding shorelands and improved wildlife habitat.

As it turns out, what is good for water quality and wildlife is also good for humans. By protecting the natural world right at home, along Lake Bomoseen and Lake Raponda, the world just became a little healthier for all.

The projects relied on bioengineering techniques to protect the shorelands. Bioengineering is a shoreline stabilization approach that uses living plant materials as structural components to offer immediate soil protection and reinforcement, create resistance to sliding or shear displacement. Today, if you drive along Cedar Mountain Road which borders Lake Bomoseen or drive just south of the public access to Lake Raponda on Lake Raponda Road, you can see how bioengineering positively impacts ecosystems, water quality, and critical infrastructure like roads. Using biodegradable products, native plants, and natural materials, a living shoreland was re-established along the shorelines of Bomoseen and Raponda. The shorelines had been previously cleared of native vegetation and fallen prey to heightened erosion. Indeed, the loss of vegetation along the lake shore combined with development pressures associated with the presence of a road created instability and active erosion along these shoreline locations.

To address this issue, bioengineering projects were installed along the shorelines of areas that had been impacted by the installation of roads near the shoreline. The new plantings will stabilize the bank, filter water, provide habitat for wildlife, and bring some shade to all Town Beach users.
