Among all professions, individuals with a professional degree in 2017 had an average salary that paid approximately $700 more per week than those with only a bachelors degree, according to the most recent statistics available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those with a masters degree earned roughly $300 more.

All this being said, what can you expect to earn with a bioengineering salary? As is so often the case, it depends on several factors, including who you ask, the type of bioengineer job thats available, location and years of experience.

For instance, in 2018, the median bioengineer salary was $88,550 per year, according to BLS analysis. That translates to an hourly rate of roughly $42.50.

Speak to bioengineers in research and development, though, and they may tell you a different salary story. In May 2018 the most recent month for which complete government data was available bioengineers earned a median of $93,250. Those in medical equipment and supplies manufacturing made less at $83,450 per year, with biomedical engineers employed at colleges, universities and other academic institutions earning $69,100. That is still higher than what the average household receives in annual wages.

Meanwhile, bioengineers in navigational, measuring, electromedical and control instruments manufacturing saw the highest annual wages in 2018. The median was $101,960.

Overall meaning biomedical engineers, in general the top 10% earned $144,350 annually, BLS data showed. In short, a six-figure salary is more than possible its probable. The more years of experience you have, the greater the likelihood of a high-paying job.

Other highly respected organizations and publications corroborate BLS facts and figures. The American Institute for Medical and Biomedical Engineering says bioengineers in research and development currently make the most on average at nearly $102,600. The typical bioengineering salary in pharmaceuticals is roughly $98,610 and $95,000 in medical equipment manufacturing.

As previously referenced, where a job may open in biomedical engineering in the U.S. can also influence actual earnings. According to the Economic Research Institute, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the average is $124,000, and nearby Columbus, the typical bioengineering salary is $146,000.

Meanwhile, in Massachusetts capital city of Boston, bioengineers earn $146,000 annually. Bioengineering salary levels are influenced by demand, the nature of the job and cost of living, among other factors.

The same goes for countries. While U.S.-based bioengineering salary levels are generally the most lucrative, others include Japan ($92,956 per year), Switzerland ($93,575) and Australia ($87,650), based on figures compiled by ERI.

These figures are all related to what the bioengineer salary is today. But what about tomorrow, meaning several years from now? Earnings are expected to surge, potentially by as much as 16% over a five-year period. Specifically, by 2024, the estimated salary could top $146,800, according to ERI.

22 IIT Guwahati researchers featured in list of world’s top scientists – Mint

Twenty two faculty members and researchers of Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati were featured in the list of the world's top two per cent scientists created by Stanford University of the USA. The list prepared by experts at Stanford University has names of over 1,00,000 scientists, whose published research manuscripts have accelerated progress in their respective fields and influenced productivity of other researchers as well, a statement issued by IIT Guwahati said.

The institute's Director T G Sitharam and other faculty members were listed and ranked for their research publications citations for the year 2019 and their lifetime contribution to their specific fields of research.

IIT Guwahati faculty members featured in the list are from the Departments of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Biosciences and Bioengineering, Chemistry, Electrical and Electronics. "This recognition of several faculty of the institute in the world's top two per cent of Scientists List has placed it in the global map of science and has brought great pride to the Institute. I congratulate all the 22 scientists and their hard work and commitment to furthering science," Sitharam said. The database report on field specific analysis was prepared by Prof John P A Loannidis of Stanford University and his team and was published in the prestigious journal PLOS Biology, the statement said.

UB leads $3.7 million project to improve MRI technology – UB Now: News and views for UB faculty and staff – University at Buffalo Reporter

Diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue, such as ligaments, tendons and bone, are a major cause of disability in the U.S.

MRI has increasingly become the diagnostic tool of choice for evaluation and management of these diseases and injuries, primarily due to its ability to provide information on anatomic structure and function in a noninvasive way.

But modern MRI still have some limitations.

Its ability to show connective tissue is hampered by inadequate sensitivity and the slow process of completing a MRI scan. Semi-solid and solid tissues, including collagen-rich tissues such as calcified ligaments and tendons, as well as periosteum, cortical bone and trabecular bone, provide a weak magnetic resonance signal due to their fast signal decay.

In addition, during the long time it takes to complete an MRI scan, involuntary movements of people negatively affect the clarity of the images, posing a critical challenge in obtaining high-resolution images with diagnostic value.

To address these issues, biomedical engineer Xiaoliang Zhang, a SUNY Empire Innovation Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, is leading a team of researchers from UB; University of California, Berkeley; Stanford University; University of Minnesota; Cleveland Clinic; and GE Global Research to develop advanced MRI techniques.

UB's Department of Biomedical Engineering is a joint program of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Funded by a five-year, $3.7 million Bioengineering Research Partnership U01 grant from the National Institutes of Health, the team will develop sensitive imaging tools for morphological and functional characterization of ligaments, tendons and bone, which are essential for studying semi-solid connective tissues in health and disease.

Through a synergistic bioengineering research partnership, we will develop advanced flexible and wearable imaging hardware, fast imaging techniques and imaging sequences at the ultrahigh field of 7 Tesla to deliver a comprehensive imaging tool, says Zhang.

In addition to these technologies, the team will also investigate the use of ultra-short echo time and zero echo time methods, which have shown unparalleled capability to image solid and semi-solid tissues that are normally invisible in MRI scans.

We expect this research to have a long-term clinical impact in the management of musculoskeletal system injuries, as well as peripheral vascular diseases, joint/cartilage disorders, and complications associated with diabetes, osteoporosis and rheumatism in humans, says Zhang.

Zhang is an internationally renowned expert in magnetic resonance imaging and its biomedical applications. He joined UB in 2018 from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and UC Berkeley and UCSFs Joint Biomedical Engineering Program, where he was professor and director of High Field MR Imaging Technology.

We are fortunate to have Xiaoliang in Buffalo and our department, thanks to the SUNY Empire Innovation Professor program. He is leading our efforts to improve healthcare, and working with our students to develop the next leaders in this field, says Albert Titus, professor and chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Zhang is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), and has received numerous awards, including the Outstanding Contribution Award from the Overseas Chinese Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, Distinguished Investigator Award from the Academy of Radiology Research in Washington, D.C., and the UCSF Award for Established Investigator in Basic and Clinical/Translational Sciences.
