Colo. Paramedic’s IV Therapy Business Booming – EMSWorld

Greeley Tribune, Colo.

Mobile IV therapy is commonly associated with relieving hangovers after a long night of raucous libation-focused partying.

However, Rocky Mountain IV Medics is using the procedure to help people with a variety of ailments including fatigue, anxiety, altitude sickness and much more.

Opening in the Denver area in October 2019, the company has quickly grown to offering services in Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, Greeley and Loveland areas.

Cofounder and CEO Ryan Richardson first learned about the benefits of IV therapy after becoming a client of partner Jonny Weber's Mobile IV Nurses business, which operates in Arizona.

"My wife and I were just deathly ill and said we finally had an excuse to call Jonny and his new IV therapy company," Richardson explained. "So he comes out and literally by the end of the IV we were perfect. It was like, 'Oh, my God, this is the future.'"

Richardson was so impressed with the results from his treatment that he and Weber discussed expanding the business concept into Colorado.

With a background as a paramedic/firefighter, Weber heads the medical portion of the business while Richardson is in charge of marketing and business development.

Each IV tech on the team is either a nurse or paramedic, with years of experience under their belts, Richardson explained. The staffs' extensive experience also allows them to recognize more serious situations where clients may need to go to the hospital.

"It's super safe. It is an invasive procedure, so some people still get worried about that, but everything is sterile and safe," Weber said. "As a paramedic/firefighter, I have done IVs on the side of the road, upside down in a car, in the back of a helicopter, in the back of an ambulance, things like that where it's super crazy. When I go to a client's house, this is fun. I can take my time and it's controlled and clean."

And while 10% of the company's calls are for hangover relief, the therapy can help with a variety of issues such as dehydration, constipation, pain management and migraines.

"The majority of our calls are from people that really need the IVs, like people going through chemo and cancer or going through migraines. You don't have to go to the ER for migraines anymore, we come to you," Weber said. "We can take care of that migraine without any narcotics."

With the COVID-19 pandemic spreading across the U.S., the company has seen an increase in calls from clients needing therapy to help overcome the virus or from clients, like pregnant women, needing a boost of hydration or relief from nausea, but not wanting to risk going to the hospital.

"We do this in a controlled environment, we are one-on-one and everything we use is single-use, single package directly from our pharmacy," Richardson said. "It just makes it so that it's another opportunity to be treated on a medical level without ever having to get out of bed."

Rocky Mountain IV Medics client Brenda Williams was looking for something to help her daughter who suffers from cyclical vomiting syndrome, a condition often seen in children and young adults where they have unknown causes of recurring bouts of vomiting.

"When an episode starts, there is no at-home relief," Williams said. " I figured that since it is 2020, there must be something out there. When your child is sick, you will do anything."

Williams came across an ad for Rocky Mountain IV Medics while scrolling Facebook when her daughter was in the hospital. She contacted the company for a service, wanting to try out IV therapy on herself first before considering it for her daughter.

"Michael showed up and educated me on everything they offered. He was amazing," she said. "I have only used the service once so far but am considering using it for a general boost once a month. They offer so much for so many different ailments and preventative care.

"I have recommended this service to everyone I know and look forward to my next visit," she added.

Clients can choose from several different IV therapy "cocktails" and add-ons.

The Myers' Cocktail features six high-impact vitamins, minerals and antioxidants including vitamin B complex, zinc and glutathione. This IV solution can be used to help recover from various things like the flu or an athletic injury and aides in skin health and weight loss regimens. The cost for this therapy is $175 per session.

The Ultimate Myers' Cocktail includes everything in the regular Myers' Cocktail but has an increased dose of vitamin C and glutathione. This option is great for people interested in boosting their vitamin C intake and raising their overall energy level. The cost for the Ultimate Myers' Cocktail is $275 a session.

The Gold package, which runs for $150 a session, offers clients 1,000 ccs of normal saline, vitamin B complex and two additions of their choice -- vitamin or medicine. This package is great for curing nausea and food poisoning.

The Silver packages features 1,000 ccs of normal saline, vitamin B complex and one addition of your choice for $125 per session. This package it typically recommended for people suffering from headaches, the cold or flu, and need some added hydration and a boost.

For people just looking for added hydration with a small boost of vitamin B complex at a minimal price, the Bronze package is perfect. For $110 clients can get the benefits of hydration and energy. This package is great for people preparing for an athletic event.

Clients can also choose plain saline for $100 or the NAD+ IV therapy that has anti-aging and addiction properties for $200. Add-ons range in price from $25 up to $50 and include options of extra saline, vitamin C, Zofran, Zinc or an MIC B12 injection.

The company doesn't accept insurance but clients can pay with a debit or credit card, Health Savings Account card, cash, or through Venmo, Paypal or or Zelle.

Interested in experiencing the benefits of IV therapy firsthand, I took Richardson up on an offer for a complimentary session.

Working full time, taking three classes at Aims and caring for my dog, Don Luigi,I tend to burn the candle at both ends and am often tired and sluggish. Add that to not exercising regularly, going through an early medically induce menopause and not having the healthiest diet, I was a good candidate to put the treatment to the test.

The first thing the IV tech Juan Salomon did was talk to me about my health history, any medications I take and if I have any allergies. He then took my vitals, listened to my heart and lungs, and prepped the solution.

After filling out some short paperwork, I was ready for my stick.

This is where most people get nervous, especially if they've had a bad experience with blood draws and needle sticks before. But being a paramedic, Salomon is used to having to set IV's in all kinds of veins -- including the forehead-- and in all kinds of situations and assured me that my veins weren't a challenge.

A small poke and short sting later my IV was set and the bright green solution began dripping into the tube that flowed down to my arm.

The entire process from start to finish took around 45 minutes.

While I didn't feel anything right off the bat, I did sleep much better that night and the next day I did feel more energized, alert and peppy. My energy levels have continued to stay up and my body just feels better.

So do I think that IV therapy is beneficial?

For me, I do think that the burst of vitamins and minerals has helped me for sure. While the cost can be a little high, I feel that the benefits are worth the cost. IV therapy is something I would seriously consider doing once a quarter.

Aging-US Releases "From Causes of Aging to Death from COVID-19" – PRNewswire

Age, Age-related diseases, Male Gender, Mortality from aging compared with COVID-19 mortality, Age-related diseases, Cytokine storm as a hyperfunction, Hyperfunction theory of quasi-programmed aging, COVID-19 vulnerability as an age-related syndrome, Inflamm-aging and immunosenescence, Cellular senescence as a continuation of growth, Figuratively, rapamycin rejuvenates immunity, Anti-aging medicine, Rapamycin and everolimus as anti-aging drugs and, Potential applications of rapamycin/everolimus to COVID-19

The author contends that at its deepest level, aging is driven by inappropriately high cellular functioning. The hyperfunction theory of quasi-programmed aging explains why COVID-19 vulnerability is an age-dependent syndrome, linking it to other age-related diseases.

These conditions are typical age-related diseases: hypertension, diabetes, obesity, ischemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and other diseases.

This is because pre-existing conditions are manifestations of biological age, ultimately meaning that A. aging and B. diseases are two sides of the same coin.

The Blagosklonny Research Teamgoes on to highlight that an anti-aging intervention, such as rapamycin, may slow aging and age-related diseases, potentially decreasing COVID-19 vulnerability.

The Aging-US Reviewalso reported that as soon as the COVID-19 epidemic started, it became clear that COVID-19 vulnerability is an aging-dependent condition, and the use of rapamycin was immediately suggested by independent researchers.

By decreasing biological age and preventing age-related diseases, long-term rapamycin therapy may, in theory, decrease the COVID-19 mortality rate in the elderly.

As specifically discussed in the Review section titled "Figuratively, rapamycin rejuvenates immunity", mTOR inhibitors can improve immunity to viral infections, improve immunization and vaccination to some viruses such as the flu.

The hypothetical graph in the absence of COVID-19. COVID-19 vulnerability increases exponentially with age.

Then as discussed in the section "Cytokine storm is a hyperfunction", cytokine storm and hyper-inflammation is the main cause of death in COVID-19 pneumonia Rapamycin, an anti-inflammatory agent, inhibits hyper-functions, cellular senescence and decrease secretion of cytokines.

The Underrated Anti-Inflammatory Nutrient That Will Help You Live Longer, According to a Functional Medicine Doctor – Well+Good

As one of the top functional medicine doctors in the country, Frank Lipman, MD, is asked a wide range of health-related questions every single day. Sometimes theyre tied to something specific trending in the wellness space: Is collagen overrated? (Nope.) Is oat milk? (Possibly.) Other times, its about how to get a better nights sleep. But all the queries seem to be rooted in an even bigger question: how to live a long, healthy life.

Longevity seems to be at the heart of every question hes asked, so Dr. Lipman decided to write a whole book dedicated to the topic: The New Rules of Aging Well: A Simple Program For Immunity Resilience, Strength, and Vitality ($20), out October 27, 2020. Tucked in the pages are some rules youre likely familiar with, like cutting back on sugar and having a strong sense of purpose. But there are also some surprising things that have been scientifically linked to longevity that arent as widely talked about. One of those truth bombs is centered around an anti-inflammatory compound called quercetin.

Never heard of it? Quercetin is a polyphenol derived in plants that is connected to lowering inflammation, supporting the immune system, and, yes, longevity. Besides curcumin, quercetin is one of the most important supplements for both immunity and longevity, Dr. Lipman says. Looks like turmeric has some competition.

Before we dig deep into all the benefits quercetin boasts, its helpful to know what the heck it actually is. Dr. Lipman explains that quercetin is a type of polyphenol, which are micronutrients with antioxidant properties found in plants. Some foods that have this particular type of polyphenol are apples, onion, raspberries, red grapes, and cherries.

Quercetin has lots of benefits, but Dr. Lipman is most excited about its connection with longevity. One is that it affects longevity gene pathways in a positive way, specifically activating AMPK [a protein enzyme], he says. AMPK helps regulate cellular metabolism; when cellular energy is low, AMPK is called in for backup to keep the body running as it should. It also controls cellular autophagy, aka the clearing out of damaged cells. And recent research suggests that the enzyme can potentially delay the aging process as well. One paper published in the journal Discoveries states that AMPK activation increased the life of fruit flies by as much as 30 percent.

Quercetin is anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and immunity-boosting, Dr. Lipman addsproperties that are important for longevity. To his point, chronic inflammation is associated with many age-related health problems, including cognitive decline and cancer, so managing inflammation is often seen as crucial for living a longer, healthier life. Meanwhile, the immune system weakens with age, making it harder for the body to fight off illness, so keeping it in tip-top shape is critical. Quercetin also supports gut health; since a huge portion of the immune system lies in the gut, keeping your gut healthy is very important to immunity, says Dr. Lipman.

Dont worry curcumin, we still love you. Watch the video below to see why its so powerful:

Despite quercetin being in such a wide range of plant-based foods, Dr. Lipman says most people dont consume enough of it to truly benefit. Part of this is because most Americans dont eat enough fruits and vegetables, but even foods that naturally contain quercetin dont have very high doses of the polyphenol. This is why Dr. Lipman often recommends a quercetin supplement. (He actually has his own, Superpowder, $54, which he created for The Well as its chief medical officer.)

While certainly more studies need to be done on quercetin (particularly on humans, not fruit flies or rats), the evidence that suggests its connection to longevity is compelling. But Dr. Lipman reiterates that it, like anything else, certainly isnt a silver bullet for being a healthy octogenarian.

One of the most important things for longevity is getting enough sleep, he says. We have a glymphatic system in the brain, which is the brains self-cleaning mechanism, and it only works when youre asleep. Not getting enough sleep makes it harder for the glymphatic system to do its clean-up job, which over time can lead to cognitive decline, Dr. Lipman says.

He also emphasizes the importance of having a sense of purpose, regular exercise, and eating healthy overall. Doubling down on apples and onions or popping a daily quercetin supplement is no replacement for a healthy diet. When you look at Blue Zones, where people regularly live into old age in good health, they eat foods that are close to nature and not overly processed, they have a good support system, and aging is actually revered, Dr. Lipman says. These things matter.

When it comes to longevity, its not only about what you put into your body, but is also about whats in your heart. While the benefits may be outward-facing, when you get down to it, longevity truly is an inside job.

The anti-aging and skin-healing effects of vitamin E – Insider – INSIDER

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that is found in foods like avocados, sunflower oil, and red bell peppers. When consumed orally, vitamin E has many benefits, including slowing the aging process of cells, boosting the immune system, and reducing premenstrual symptoms (PMC).

But for skin, vitamin E's main strength is its power as an antioxidant. Antioxidants help combat free radicals, which are unstable molecules that age our skin and damage cells.

While there are many proven benefits of vitamin E for skin health, there are also some myths that lack evidence. Here's what you need to know.

Vitamin E, in particular, is a potent antioxidant that can prevent sun damage to the skin, alleviate eczema, and more.

Free radicals are everywhere. They can be emitted from the sun, pollution, cigarette smoke, and a vast number of other sources. They show up naturally in our bodies, too. These unstable molecules can damage collagen and glycosaminoglycans, two substances that keep your skin smooth, firm, and moisturized.

Since vitamin E is a strong antioxidant, it can combat the effects of free radicals on your skin and protect it from visible signs of aging caused by these damaging molecules.

How to use it: You can use it topically and it is available in an cream, oil, or serum.

Free radicals from the sun can cause collagen and elastin in the skin to breakdown, which can trigger signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles. Since vitamin E has antioxidant properties, it can help fight signs of sun damage, says Caren Campbell, MD, a board-certified dermatologist with a private practice in San Francisco.

Additionally, using vitamin E in combination with vitamin C in topical formulations, like creams or serums, has been shown to prevent short term UV damage as well as chronic UV photodamage, like dark spots.

How to use it: To use vitamin E to fight sun damage, use it topically in creams, oils, or serums. Even though it may be able to prevent UV damage, it won't replace sunscreen.

One small 2015 study found that taking vitamin E supplements of 400 IU/day for four months was more effective at treating eczema symptoms including itching and lesions than a placebo.

However, more thorough research is needed before healthcare professionals should consider prescribing a vitamin E supplement to treat eczema, says Kathleen C. Suozzi, MD, dermatologist and aesthetics director of Yale Medicine Dermatology.

How to use it: To use vitamin E for eczema, consider taking it orally through a supplement. However, you should check with your doctor before starting any supplements, as Vitamin E can build up in the body to dangerous amounts if you regularly take too much.

Studies have shown that vitamin E may be helpful for psoriasis, however, these studies have not looked at vitamin E on its own.

One 2009 study looked at the supplementation of coenzyme Q10, vitamin E, and selenium in 58 patients with severe psoriasis. The study found that oxidative stress was reduced and clinical conditions of psoriasis were improved in patients who took the supplements versus those who took a placebo.

How to use it: More research needs to be done to confirm the efficacy of using vitamin E alone, but to use vitamin E for psoriasis, you can take it in the form of supplements. Again, check with your doctor before taking supplements.

There are also many unfounded claims about how vitamin E affects the skin:

Some people believe that vitamin E can help reduce scarring from wounds and acne. However, research has shown that topical application of Vitamin E to scars does not make a difference in the appearance of the scars, and may actually result in contact dermatitis.

There is anecdotal evidence that topical vitamin E can help prevent or reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Studies have not backed this up, though. According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, home remedies such as vitamin E for stretch marks are not effective.

The antioxidant properties of vitamin E could possibly make it useful for skin cancer prevention, says the Skin Cancer Foundation. However, hard research supporting this is weak, and it is best to use proven means of preventing skin cancer, like always using sunscreen.

Vitamin E isn't for everybody. Suozzi says that patients with sensitive skin may have negative reactions to topical vitamin E.

Additionally, those with eczema-prone skin may have bad reactions to topical vitamin E, so if you plan on using the vitamin for eczema, it's best to stick to consuming it orally.

Campbell also says that you should be cautious if you are taking vitamin E supplements. She says an excessive intake of vitamin E can cause GI side effects like:

Additionally, vitamin E reduces blood clotting, so Campbell says it can increase your risk of bleeding or bruising. She says you should definitely avoid taking it before any medical procedures.

Since scientific evidence is spotty for vitamin E in skincare, it may be best to consult your dermatologist before trying it out orally or topically.

A dermatologist can tell you if vitamin E is the right choice for you and whatever skin ailment you may be trying to treat, as well as how to use it safely.

Avoid these 5 foods to improve your arthritis symptoms – Atlanta Journal Constitution

Inflammatory fats

While you may enjoy burgers, steaks and fried foods, these kinds of meals arent ideal for people with arthritis and should be avoided according to the Arthritis Foundation. Omega 6 fatty acids, which along with saturated fats are found in meats and fried foods, as well as trans fats found in fast food items and bakery products, can go against an anti-inflammatory diet.

There is accumulating evidence that diet certainly impacts whether our body has an inflammatory environment versus an anti-inflammatory environment, Melinda Ring, M.D., executive director of the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at Northwestern University and clinical associate professor at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine told Self magazine.

Sugar

A 2018 study published in the journal Arthritis Care & Research found that sugar-laden soda and desserts were most frequently stated as dietary items that worsened RA symptoms. But sugar is not just in soda and sweets. Hidden sugars can be found in seemingly healthy items such as granola bars and yogurt, according to WebMD.

Gluten

Gluten-free diets have increased in popularity over the last few years, but while it may be a fad for some, it could be a worthwhile change for people with arthritis. In a randomized study published in The Open Rheumatology Journal in 2018, 66 patients with RA who took on a gluten-free, vegan diet showed possible anti-inflammatory changes as well as those that protected against the build-up of fats in the arteries.

Nightshades vegetables

If you enjoy bell peppers in your salad but notice it aggravates your symptoms, you might want to consider giving them up.

Bell peppers, chilli peppers, eggplants, potatoes and tomatoes are among the vegetables that contain solanine, which according to the Arthritis Foundation is a chemical some people anecdotally state can exacerbate their symptoms. Still, rheumatologist/immunologist Leonard Calabrese told Cleveland Clinic it is highly unlikely that avoiding the trace amounts of solanine found in nightshade vegetables will ease your arthritic pain or inflammation. Research to support this claim just isnt there.

Purines-containing foods

If you suffer from gout, also known as gouty arthritis, there are certain foods that can be limited in your diet to reduce the severe pain and tenderness that occurs in the joints. This happens when uric acid builds up in the bloodstream and causes a gout attack. Since foods including organ meats, red meat and seafood like shellfish can contain high amounts of purines, they should be restricted in the diet. Purines convert to uric acid in the body, leading to symptoms of gout. According to the Mayo Clinic, following a diet that involves these measures may lower the risk of recurring gout attacks and slow the progression of joint damage.
