Senior Horses and Living the Good Life The Horse – TheHorse.com

How to assess your senior horses quality of life and know when its time to let go

Owning senior horses is a blessing and a curse. Youve enjoyed many years of partnership, built a strong bond, and share a mutual trust. On the other hand, you have to manage things like aging joints and worn-out teeth. Theres also that one pretty significant curse: Horses dont live forever, and every owner knows he or she will eventually have to say that final goodbye.

Sometimes the horse makes the choice for us, going on his own, without prolonged suffering. Other times its a decision were forced to makea severe colic or an irreparable injury that necessitates euthanasia. But in many cases owners must make decisions that arent black and white. When is it right to keep going, managing a few age-related health issues, and when is the most humane option to end his chronic pain and suffering?

We asked two veterinarians how owners can monitor their aging equids welfare and make end-of-life decisions.

Quality of life is a complex and sometimes difficult-to-evaluate concept.

For a good quality of life, horses should have adequate shelter, food, water, be treated with kindness, and be free of pain and disease, says Janice E. Kritchevsky, VMD, MS, a professor of large animal internal medicine at the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, in West Lafayette, Indiana. Because horses are herd animals, they should have companionship. A horse all by itself could probably check most of the welfare boxes, but Im not sure you could ever say a single herd animal is happy.

Liz Arbittier, VMD, an assistant professor of clinical equine field service at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicines New Bolton Center, in Kennett Square, cites the American Association of Equine Practitioners guidelines to help determine whether a horse still has a decent quality of life. A horse should not have to:

However, look at the last point, and then think about all of the horses out there that happily live on a gram of Bute (the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug [NSAID] phenylbutazone) for years with no adverse effects, she says. While they certainly can have problems related to chronic NSAID use (e.g., gastric ulcers, kidney issues)and this step should not be taken without consulting your veterinarianso many horses live comfortable and happy lives with some medical assistance. If the horse requires an excessive dose of NSAIDs to live a comfortable retired life, that may be a different story.

Like everything with horses, it comes down to each situation, which is why its important to work with a team to ensure seniors remain healthy as they age.

On the most basic level, Kritchevsky says, a horse with a good quality of life should interact with the owner, other people, and horses. They should move out, at least at a walk, willingly and have a good appetite. Finally, they should not have a chronic disease condition such as equine asthma, lameness, or (gastrointestinal) upset that cannot be managed. If these are present, one can assume that the quality of life is diminished.

Old age isnt a disease, Kritchevsky says. Horses, like people, are very individual, and some horses are old at 17 while others are young at 27.

So age alone doesnt diminish a horses quality of life. Heres more on the various disease processes that do. A flesh-eating parasite carried by dogs is making its way to North America – Down To Earth Magazine

A One Health approach, requiring the collaboration of human, animal, and environmental health partners, is key to preventing Leishmania cases in Canada and the US

Leishmania is a flesh-eating parasite that affects millions of people each year, in 98 countries and territories but isnt native to Canada and the United States. So why are veterinarians starting to report Leishmania here, so far from this parasites natural warm climate?

Leishmania are microscopic parasites transmitted by sandfly bites, and cause a disease called leishmaniosis. There are several forms of this disease, affecting the skin, mucous membranes and internal organs. Some forms of the disease lead to severe disfigurement, others death.

Leishmaniosis is classified as a neglected tropical disease by the World Health Organization, primarily affecting those in tropical and subtropical regions. The disease particularly affects populations lacking access to adequate housing and sanitation services.

Leishmaniosis is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans; dogs are the reservoir for this parasite.

Recently, veterinarians in the US and Canada have been detecting Leishmania in imported dogs: the disease has been detected in dogs in 18 states and two provinces.

Our laboratory received reports of at least 10 in Qubec within the span of a year. Soon after, we were presented with a case ourselves: a dog imported with suspected fight wounds later diagnosed to be Leishmania.

More and more, owners are travelling with their pets or importing animals from other countries. The regulations for bringing pets into Canada are lax generally, the only requirements are proof of rabies vaccination and a certificate from a veterinarian declaring the animal to be in apparent good health.

Furthermore, since many of the tests and diagnostic treatments for exotic diseases (including leishmaniosis) are unfamiliar or inaccessible in Canada, diagnosis and treatment are complicated.

This puts the health of the patient and ultimately the public, at risk.

Although the exact species of sandflies that transmit Leishmania are not present in Canada, reports of Leishmania maintaining itself within groups of kennelled foxhounds in 18 states and two provinces strongly suggest that the parasite can be transmitted from dog to dog: through bites, breeding or blood transfusions. In addition, it has recently been demonstrated that ticks can also transmit leishmaniosis.

Therefore, although unfortunate, Leishmania establishment in Canada and the US remains possible.

Treatment of leishmaniosis is currently limited to very few drugs, most of which have been in use for decades. In recent years, there has been an increase in Leishmania drug resistance and treatment failure.

Scientists, including us, are searching for clues to better understand how these parasites survive in the presence of anti-leishmanial drugs. A number of experiments have led us (and others) to focus on Leishmanias release of extracellular vesicles.

Extracellular vesicles are small, round particles with a fatty outer membrane, and they are produced by all living cells, including Leishmania parasites. Although tiny you need an electron microscope to see them these particles transport valuable cargo that ranges from DNA to fats and proteins. The contents of these vesicles provide a snapshot of their cell of origin, and can be delivered to nearby cells.

Recent studies have found that not only do the size and shape of these vesicles differ between sensitive and drug-resistant strains of Leishmania, but vesicles produced by drug-resistant parasites contain special drug-resistance molecules.

A better understanding of extracellular vesicles function is another step towards understanding how drug resistance spreads among Leishmania populations with the goal of preventing it.

Additionally, research has demonstrated that when an infected sandfly bites a human, its not just parasites that are injected into the bloodstream: extracellular vesicles come along too and are confronted by our immune system.

Studying extracellular vesicles may provide vital information for the development of new Leishmania therapies or a vaccine.

Unified approaches

Mandatory reporting of canine leishmaniosis cases by veterinarians, easy access to fast and reliable diagnostic tests and appropriate treatments and an overhaul of animal importation regulations are critical.

A One Health approach, requiring the collaboration of human, animal, and environmental health partners, is key to preventing Leishmania cases in Canada and the US.

Royal beauty: Self-regeneration is the secret behind The History of Whoos best-selling essence – Prestige Online

The art of ageing gracefully is a holistic journey one that The History of Whoo is well-versed in. The luxury beauty brand merges imperial beauty secrets with modern science for powerful formulations that nourish and revitalise skin.

The Bichup line is its revered range that targets signs of skin ageing at its crux. Like Traditional Chinese Medicine, its designed to heal from within to activate cells for self-repair. The Bichup Self-Generating Anti-Aging Essence is the ranges hero as it supports skins self-regeneration.

Millions of the essence have been sold worldwide since its launch in 2016, cementing its status as the brands bestseller for anti-ageing. The elixir works from the cellular level for skin to diagnose and repair itself.

Now, The History of Whoo has launched the 2020 Bichup Self-Generating Anti-Aging Essence 11th Special Edition. Available only in a limited quantity, the latest iteration evokes grandeur and heritage, which are synonymous with The History of Whoos DNA.

Its luxurious bottle pays homage to the royal palaces and temples of Korea. The floral lattice pattern blanketing its surface resembles the architectural element often used as the final touch in the design of the ancient buildings. Variations of flowers and leaves, including peonies, chrysanthemums, lotus flowers and sunflowers are merged with abstract patterns. These are set against an opulent colour palette accented by The History of Whoos signature gold.

Coupled with the rich and luxurious formula, its a must-have for modern women to achieve the celestial glow of Korean empresses.

The lightweight essence improves skin elasticity by strengthening the skins tissues to work on its own healing. Self-regeneration occurs in three stages. Skin issues are first identified before cells are triggered for repair. At the final stage, the healing process is complete and skin is revitalised.

Anchoring the essence is the brands proprietary Gongjinbidan complex, a yin-yang balancing formula present in all of the products. It takes inspiration from an 800-year-old anti-ageing secret concocted for the emperor it increases water energy while decreasing heat energy.

The formula is made up of six oriental herbs, namely deer antler, angelica root, cornelian cherries, acanthopanax root bark, asparagus root and wild thyme. Each has skin-correcting properties that, when combined, treat uneven and dull complexions. Internally, it strengthens skin resilience and boosts blood circulation. Externally, it smooths skin texture, hydrates and clarifies.

The Gongjinbidan complex is complemented by three supporting formulas. Cho Jahabidan is a plant placenta derivative which recognises the skins weaknesses and triggers the right cells for repair. Gyeongoakbidan is a multitasking medicinal herbal formula that protects skin, delays premature ageing and minimises the appearance of pores while adding moisture. Like the Gyeongoakbidan, the Cheongsimbidan is a medicinal herbal formula once used by the royal courts to accelerate skin detoxification and soothe skin issues.

The essence is best applied onto skin after using a toner or before applying a lotion. Massage lightly to allow for better absorption.

The 2020 Bichup Self-Generating Anti-Aging Essence 11th Special Edition is available at $266 (worth $389) or in the Imperial Duo set ($530, worth $778). Available in limited quantities and in-store only at TANGS at Tang Plaza, TANGS VivoCity, Takashimaya Department Store and BHG Bugis.

5 benefits of green tea and how it can help your memory, skin, and bones – Insider – INSIDER

Green tea is a type of tea made from steaming, pan-frying, and drying the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. It's one of the most popular beverages consumed worldwide and has been used for thousands of years.

In fact, green tea is thought to have many health benefits for those who drink it regularly. Here are five possible benefits of green tea and how to incorporate it into your diet.

One of the main ingredients in green tea is caffeine. Caffeine can block a chemical messenger in the brain called adenosine, which controls when you feel sleepy or awake. Blocking adenosine can prevent drowsiness, which is why so many people use caffeine to stay awake and mentally sharp.

An overproduction of adenosine in the brain has also been linked to cognitive conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Research shows that regular consumption of caffeine may reduce the risk of developing these conditions.

The amount of caffeine in green tea is much lower than in coffee, so you can get some of the benefits of caffeine without the unpleasant side effects, like jitteriness.

Green tea also contains an amino acid called L-theanine, which has been found to help reduce stress and boost your mood. Research shows that the combination of caffeine and L-theanine improves brain function by strengthening working memory and attention, and reducing anxiety.

A small 2019 study observed the effects of drinking green tea on brain function, concluding that regular tea drinkers have higher cognitive functions and better-organized brain regions, as compared to non-tea drinkers. A 2017 review of 21 studies on the benefits of green tea also determined that drinking green tea is beneficial to cognition and brain function.

Green tea has been found to play a role in heart health by reducing the risk factors that cause heart disease.

High blood pressure is one of the most common risk factors for heart disease. Research shows that consuming green tea significantly lowers systolic and diastolic blood pressure, which are the two different numbers by which a person's blood pressure is recorded.

A large 2006 study also showed that people who consumed six or more cups of green tea day, compared to those who consumed less than one a week, were 33% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes.

"Green tea may address multiple classic heart risk factors, like lipids, blood pressure, and diabetes," says Melinda Ring, MD, Executive Director of The Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at Northwestern University.

Moreover, a very large long-term study published in 2020 followed two groups who had no history of heart disease. The first group was made up of people who drank green tea more than three times a week, and the second group was made up of people who never drank green tea, or didn't drink it habitually. In a follow up about seven years after the start of the study, scientists found that those who drank tea regularly were likely to have 1.4 more years free of coronary artery disease at the average age of 50, than those who didn't.

Catechin is a major component of green tea. Catechins are natural antioxidants that have antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-hypertensive effects. They lower cholesterol levels by decreasing the absorption of cholesterol into the body.

An 2011 analysis of 14 studies showed that drinking an average of two cups of green tea per day for 10 years resulted in significant reductions in LDL cholesterol levels. LDL cholesterol is also known as bad cholesterol, because it can cause plaque buildup in your arteries, which increases your risk of getting a heart attack or a stroke.

"Some clinical research does show that drinking green tea or using green tea extracts can lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and increase levels of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol). The mechanism for this isn't well-defined, though one theory is that epigallocatechin gallate (ECGC), a compound of green tea, affects the circulation of bile acids, which helps to regulate cholesterol," says Ring.

Green tea also helps to keep your bones healthy and strong. Research shows that it may help treat and prevent osteoporosis, a condition that makes your bones weaker and more prone to fractures.

"Tea leaves contain fluoride, which might slow osteoporosis, as well as beneficial compounds such as flavonoids and phytoestrogens," Ring says. Flavonoids are and phytoestrogens are plant chemicals that can strengthen bone formation and prevent the breakdown of bone tissue.

In a 2017 study, 171 postmenopausal women with weak bones and low bone mass were put into four groups. The results of the study showed that the group of women who were given compounds derived from green tea experienced a notable improvement in their bone health.

A 2009 study also concluded that green tea may benefit bone health, after examining bone-forming cells. The researchers exposed the cells to epigallocatechin (EGC), gallocatechin (GC), and gallocatechin gallate (GCG), which are all main components of green tea. After several days, they observed that EGC promoted bone growth by up to 79%. They also observed that high concentrations of EGC disrupted the activity of osteoclast, a cell that weakens bones.

Drinking green tea or using it topically has many benefits for your skin.

Green tea contains a micronutrient called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) that may be responsible for green tea's skin repair properties. Some research shows that EGCG contains antioxidants, which help to prevent sun damage. It also boosts skin hydration, moisture retention, and prevents wrinkle formation.

Green tea has also been shown to have anti-aging properties. A small 2005 study studied the effects of using oral supplements and applying green tea topically on aging skin for 8 weeks. Researchers found that the combination of using green tea topically and orally in the participants caused an improvement in the skin's elasticity.

Catechin, a polyphenol in green tea, also helps to soothe inflamed skin when used topically.

Green tea comes in different forms, but to enjoy the optimal benefits of tea, it's best to drink it plain. Some research suggests that adding milk may counteract some of the health benefits of drinking tea.

It's important to note that green tea contains caffeine, so if you have a caffeine sensitivity, you might want to consume it in smaller amounts.

The Most Beneficial Japanese Beauty Ingredients for Your Skin and Hair – Coveteur

Glowy skin and healthy hair are in your future.

Japan has some of the oldest beauty traditions in the world, spanning more than 3,000 years. And while Japanese beauty is globally renowned for the rituals of the geisha, there has been comparatively little focus given to the daily practices of the modern Japanese woman. But through the globalization of the beauty market, Japanese beauty (or J-beauty, as its commonly known) is finally getting its moment in the beauty spotlight for its skin-care products that deliver undeniable results.

Many products have already gained cult status, like eyelash curlers from Shu Uemura and SK-IIs face masks. But the ingredients that have made Japanese beauty products global powerhouses are also gaining popularity among American beauty brands and wellness spaces, from tsubaki oil to shiso, and are quickly becoming the most sought-after new products on the market.

The Asia region has long been considered the center of beauty innovation, states SCAD associate chair of The Business of Beauty and Fragrance Meloney Moore. Beauty rituals in Asia have as many as 13 steps and they can change seasonally. The Asian consumer has a deep psychological relationship to beauty. Moore reminds us that Korean beauty was really the first to reach Western culture in a major way, via products like BB creams, fun, colorful packaging, and sheet masks.

But with Western consumers focusing more on ingredients over the last five or so years, beauty lovers are now researching the origin stories of their favorite products, as well as demanding transparency from their new ones. And few countries have as stellar a reputation and history of ingredient innovation than Japan. Japan is where most Asian people go for efficacious and transformative beauty products, Moore reveals. I believe J-beauty successfully signifies quality because its backed by a rich and meticulous culture, advanced formulation techniques, and powerful ingredients stories. This is very appealing to the younger generation.

J-beautys influence is real, and all manner of beauty brands cant help but be inspired, from buzzy newcomers to drugstore favorites. Here, six classic Japanese ingredients that have entered the beauty mainstream, what they can do for your hair and skin, and our go-to products.

Known as komenuka, the outer layer of the rice grain is brimming with antioxidants like gamma oryzanol, which deeply penetrates the skin, inositol, several B-spectrum vitamins, vitamin E, ferulic, linoleic, and oleic acids, proanthocyanidinswhich support collagen and elastinsqualene, and nourishing proteins. Rice bran is used in many ways and carries multiple benefits for the body, hair, and skin, states skin therapist Samantha Mims. Its high content in antioxidants such as vitamins E and C, squalane, and rich fatty acids contribute to scalp stimulation. Its effects on the hair are related to stronger and healthier hair.

In skin care, rice bran has anti-aging properties that work to regenerate the skin by diminishing the appearance of fine lines and evening out the skins complexion. Mims recommends incorporating products with it into your fall and winter routines as it helps to efficiently hydrate skin. Its also non-comedogenic and can be used as a gentle makeup remover.

$19

When Canadian sustainable beauty brand Stevie Fox launched in March of this year, it decided to place rice bran center stage in its hero product, the glow-boosting Bondi Babe Oil. Rice-bran oil is a super sustainable oilperhaps the ultimate in sustainability, given its benefitsbeing upcycled from the waste product of the rice industry, so we were immediately drawn to it, founder Lisa Cherry tells Coveteur. We were also drawn to its skin powers as it does so much to achieve that glow from within so easily, quickly, and effectively. Stevie Fox harvests their rice bran domestically in Canada to help keep their carbon footprint low, given the physical distance at play in shipping the ingredient from Japan.

Natural skin-care brand Anokha incorporates rice bran into their cleansing oil because of its anti-inflammatory effects, how it absorbs quickly into the skin without leaving any residue, and the fact that its an ingredient gentle enough to be used on babies, according to founder Nina S. Naidu, MD, FACS. Japanese beauty is refined, elevated, and simpleall things that speak to Anokha, she states. While our first incarnation focused heavily on South Asian ingredients, I wanted to be more global in both our outlook and sourcing, and the Japanese aesthetic very naturally spoke to us when we rebranded in 2019.

The traditional Japanese approach to beauty is a holistic one, especially as it relates to ingredients, states Tatcha CMO Sarah Curtis Henry. It embodies the philosophy that whats good for the body is good for the skin. Tatcha uses rice bran in over a dozen of its products. This cream is one of its bestsellers worldwide, hydrating and plumping the skin and delivering a healthy glow.

Known as Camellia Japonica, this winter-blooming flower is essential to Japanese beauty. Its seed breaks down into lightweight yet deeply moisturizing oil when cold-pressed. Geishas would use the oil to remove their elaborate makeup and restore their skin.

Though called Japanese camellia, the flower also grows in mainland China, southern Korea, and Taiwan, as well as in southern Japan. It is also the state flower of Alabama in the United States, truly speaking to its global influence. Tsubaki is a testament to how nature continues to sprout even when man-made borders change.

Tsubaki is a great oil rich in fatty [acids] as well as vitamins A, D, Egreat for hydration and overall repair, says Dr. Sheila Farhang, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Avant Dermatology & Aesthetics. I think this oil is particularly great for nail cuticles as well as hair. Its antifungal properties can also be used to prevent dandruff, though I always recommend seeing a dermatologist for scalp symptoms.

$34

A longtime fan of Japanese beauty and fashion (which is documented on both her Instagram feed and TV show), its no surprise that Kim Kardashian would rely on this ancient Japanese ingredient for one of her latest body products. Lightweight and meant for extended wear, the tsubaki oil in the powder complements the hyaluronic acid and strawberry-seed oil for ample hydration and a skin-perfecting finish.

MUTHA founder Hope Smith discovered a slew of Japanese ingredients on a trip she took to Japan, and the rest was history. Tsubaki oil is a rare ingredient found in skin care because it is very expensive, but its such a skin superfood that we felt it was necessary to add into our oil, she explains. Though Smiths personal discovery of tsubaki oil was in Japan, MUTHA harvests it primarily from Jeju Island in South Korea. The Jeju Island is such a pure place with fresh air, fertile soil, and pure water that creates the cleanest environment for ingredients, she affirms. The soil is rich in iron oxide and organic matters, and the volcanic island itself functions as a natural filter. For such reasons, Jeju was the best place from which to gain good ingredients.

Hair-care brand Crown Affair harvests its tsubaki oil from Japan, where CEO Dianna Cohen fell in love with the country and its beauty ethos after her own trip there. Tsubaki has been used there for centuries because of its ability to retain moisture and penetrate the deepest layer of both the skin and hair, she explains. Its filled with proteins and oleic acids, which keep the hair healthy and strong, and its remarkable for restoring moisture while still being weightless, which is exactly what I wanted to achieve for both The Oil and The Renewal Mask.

This citrus fruit is cultivated and harvested in Japan but grows in the wild in central China and Tibet, as well. Brimming with vitamin C, it helps to thoroughly cleanse your skin and flush your body from the inside out, while its bright and crisp fragrance helps to invigorate and refresh. It is customary to add yuzu to your bath in Japan on the winter solstice to soak away impurities and calm you for the season ahead.

Mims explains that yuzu oil is great as an antioxidant serum for brightening hyperpigmentation and combating dryness. In addition, for the body, it supports respiratory health and can alleviate stress and anxiety. All the reasons why it is widely used in aromatherapy.

Globally renowned Japanese-founded skin-care brand Bior just launched an entire line of products fortified with yuzu lemon to brighten and balance the skin, including this cleanser. The term brightening is coming under fire as having potential links to a racist approach to skin care, as many wonder if deeper and richer skin can actually be brightened and whether that is both the right word and goal. But the product does create a smooth, healthy foundation for the rest of your routine.

A botanical native to East Asia, rosa rubiginosa, aka Japanese wild rose, has been cultivated throughout the centuries for its medicinal benefits. It has been traditionally used in Eastern medicine to treat wounds in poultice form, as well as in tea made from its dried petals to detoxify, relieve headaches, and improve circulation.

After the Japanese wild rose flowers bloom, the flowers produce rose hips, which are a natural source of essential fatty acids, rich in flavonoids, tannins, and vitamins A, C, and E.

Japanese wild rose has been one of my favorite ingredients to date, as it is known for its natural antiseptic qualities along with its hydrating and soothing components, states Mims. It seems to be ideal for sensitive and maturing skin. Its also good for immunity health as another excellent source of vitamin C. When used in hair products, it strengthens and promotes healthy, moisturized hair.

A sacred tree in Japanese culture, hinoki is used to construct many Shinto shrines and temples in Japan. Its wood is not only antimicrobial, but its oil is an eco-conscious form of insect repellent. The powerful scent is commonly used in aromatherapy to promote a sense of relaxation. But we must note that hinoki is on the edge of becoming an endangered species, so its imperative that a brand discloses whether the oil or the wood itself is sustainably distilled, whether in their products or if theyre using it as a construction material at a spa.

Dr. Farhang sees hinoki used mainly in fragrance forms in cosmetics, soap, and toothpaste due to its olfactory benefits such as reducing anxiety and calming down the central nervous system. But of it and other essential oils, she warns, They are notorious for causing allergic contact dermatitis in people that are sensitive to them, so I would spot-treat an area before using products with these oils in them. She continues, If there is no sensitivity, a lot of these oils are antioxidant, hydrating, and antibacterial. As plant-based goes more mainstream, we will be seeing more of these ingredients.
