‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Never Should’ve Killed Off Lexie – Collider

The Big Picture

Besides being known as the longest running American medical drama, Greys Anatomy is also characterized by the carousel of characters that have come and gone. Its not a surprise at all, with such a large ensemble cast and with the show running for almost 20 years now. A common narrative device courtesy of creator Shonda Rhimes and crew to manage actors behind-the-scenes drama and contract expirations has proven to be controversial but effective: killing them off. One that still hurts and shouldve been handled differently at the time was the death of Chyler Leighs Lexie Grey.

Introduced in the Season 3 finale, Lexie was Merediths (Ellen Pompeo) half-sister. Yes, family twists are also one of Greys Anatomys staples, and Lexie was one of the earliest ones. For five seasons, we got to know who she was, with her eventually becoming a fan-favorite. When Leighs contract expired, she opted out of the show, looking to spend more time with her family. There was no foul play involved, as both her and Rhimes came up with what ultimately became her tragic end. Still, in retrospect, Leighs exit shouldve been executed in a way that wouldve allowed her to reprise her role as Lexie.

A drama centered on the personal and professional lives of five surgical interns and their supervisors.

While Season 8 is considered one of the best of Greys Anatomy, its finale proves to be a bit more divisive. In Flight, half the doctors of Seattle Grace, who were headed to Boise to assist in a surgery, are left stranded in the woods after their plane crashes. A Lost-like sequence reveals how injured everyone is, but the one in the worst place turns out to be Lexie, whose lower body is crushed by plane debris. Mark (Eric Dane), who by this point was totally devoted to Lexie, stays by her side at every moment. The most heartbreaking goodbye takes place as they visualize the life they couldve (and shouldve) had together.

Besides being unexpected, Lexies death was brutal. Seeing her as the crashs first victim turned the episode into a tragic experience. An inconsolable Meredith shows her pain throughout the whole episode, and not even Cristina (Sandra Oh) can sooth it. The devastation is only heightened when Mark succumbs to his internal injuries and also dies in the Season 9 premiere. Making matters abysmally worse, Cristina shares gruesome details when going through a PTSD episode about how the wolves in the woods didnt eat them because they were busy with Lexie.

At first seeming like a mere roadblock in Merediths way to emotional stability, Lexie became so much more and still had more to give. Her healthy upbringing clashes with Merediths darker nature. They eventually make peace and their relationship evolves into a real sisterhood. Lexies dazzling essence also affects Mark in such a way that he decides to leave his womanizer era behind and own up to his actions. By Season 8, their on-again-off-again relationship had finally reached common ground where they could finally plan a stable future together.

Although she humanizes Mark and Meredith, Lexie isnt only a plot device. She becomes her own character by growing personally and professionally. Going through a shooting (in one of the shows best episodes), the consequential PTSD, and her fathers death, end up building her up instead of bringing her down. She matures with the blows life deals her, but still remains the most goodhearted and brightest soul the hospital has seen. Her skills, like her photographic memory, prove extremely useful and earn her a promotion as a surgical resident. Those were just the early steps to seeing her grow and thrive as a surgeon. Had Lexie survived, it wouldve been totally understandable to have her leave Seattle Grace following Marks death and the door would still be open for future appearances.

Okay, yes, Lexie already returned during Season 17, while Meredith was in her middle ground between life and death. She gives one of the strongest pieces of advice when she reminds her that even with a global pandemic raging on life is worth celebrating. This is one of the greatest encores we get to see at Merediths beach, but it is still only a ghostly apparition fueled by Merediths state of mind while battling COVID. Had Lexie been alive, her returning to Seattle to look after Meredith and her recovery wouldve caused a greater impact.

Leighs reasons for exiting the show are totally understandable, but killing off Lexie removed any opportunity of having her back in the mix. Teddy (Kim Raver), Addison (Kate Walsh), and Jackson (Jesse Williams) are just some of the characters that have left the show, but have been intertwined with the story in later seasons, with their returns being earned and heartfelt. Ravers Teddy even became a series regular again after an absence of six seasons (and has perhaps overstayed her welcome). Lexie deserved an encore of this kind. With Pompeo stepping down from starring in the show, Zolas (Aniela Gumbs) education has been sped-up to apparently fit her in as some type of Doogie Howser who can still carry the Grey name. In a what-if situation, having Lexie return wouldve been the best way to sort out the fact that the show is still named Greys Anatomy.

More than a show, Greys Anatomy quickly became a rollercoaster of emotions. Each season finale turned into a whole event which had the burden of delivering something more impactful and emotional than the previous season while also making creative choices that fit with its actors decisions. Since Lexie had already cemented herself as one of Greys Anatomys essentials, her death made sense as a blow that would cripple the fanbase but would also keep the show in everyones minds. And it worked. Here we are 12 years later talking about the twist! With the show gearing up to start its 20th season on March 14, its clear the killing-off-beloved-characters formula is going nowhere. Well just have to wait and see whos next, hoping our hearts wont be torn apart once more.

All seasons of Grey's Anatomy are now available to stream on Netflix in the U.S.

Live TV ratings: Greys Anatomy down, The Outpost up – Hidden Remote

TGIT returned on Thursday, Sept. 30, while Law & Order brought us a three-hour crossover event. Heres a look at the live TV ratings for the night.

Thursdays are a tricky night. Usually, we see TGIT take the top-spot for most of the night, but that wasnt the case on Thursday, Sept. 30. This could be linked to fans not realizing the shows were back. Despite consistent promotion, its easy to forget the return dates.

Law & Order: SVU pulled in the best demo of the night. That demo was up 1% from the two-hour season premiere, which is great news. The audience was down 15% but nothing to be concerned about.

The success for NBC continued throughout the night.Law & Order: Organized Crime was up 16% in the demo and 2% in the audience. The demo matchedGreys Anatomy and the total audience wasnt that far off. In its second hour, it lost a small amount of the total audience, but the demo remained steady.

Station 19 kicked off TGIT with its Season 5 premiere. The total audience was the best of the night, but it was down 27% compared to the Season 4 premiere. The demo sat at 0.7 but was a 42% decline from the Season 4 premiere.

Greys Anatomy Season 18s premiere was also down considerably from its Season 17 premiere. Its demo was down by almost 50%, while its total audience was down by 21%.

These figures arent concerning just yet. Theyre still strong numbers for ABC, and the two shows were still among the best in both the demo and total audience during the night.

Big Sky is the show were watching out for. The good news is the demo and total audience matched the series premiere. If ABC was happy with the first season, this is good news for the second season. Well have to see how the show stabilizes in its new timeslot, though.

The CW was the only other network with new episodes of regular shows.Coroner was up 25% in the demo and 23% in the total audience. This is a great sign and well likely see The CW acquire the fourth season from CBC.The Outpost was up 100% in the demo and up 64% in the total audience.

Well be keeping an eye on the various shows. Theres nothing to worry about so far, butBig Sky is the one were keeping the closest eye on.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Spoilers: What Will Happen and Is It Ending? | Soaps.com – Soaps.com

When the show returns, its bringing with it romance, medical chaos and a few familiar faces.

It doesnt look a day older than 10, yet ABCs long-runningGreys Anatomy will return for its 18th (!) season tonight. And though speculation has swirled that the primetime soap is eyeing the finish line, there is no indication at least as of yet that this season will be its last. What we do know, however, is that the premiere, starting at 9:00 PM ET, will feature a crossover event with sister show Station 19 that will include one hell of a return. As for what else to expect well, keep reading!

More: Everything to know about the One Chicago season premieres

As seen in the preview, the Station 19 crew cant make its way to Grey Sloan Hospital via ambulance so the first-responders appear to be forced to transport their patient on foot. Meanwhile, Owens sister Megan (All My Childrens Becca, Abigail Spencer) returns, while, in an outdoor setting, Teddy exclaims, Oh my God! while also potentially marrying Owen. And, of course, Meredith is back in action after her brush with COVID and seemingly receiving ghostly advice from her mother, as Kate Burton reprises her role of Ellis. Plus, Someone from Merediths past comes back.

Love will also be in the air when Greys Anatomy returns, as executive producer Meg Marinis previewed for our sister site TVLine. Owen and Teddy will be starting the season stronger than ever, she said. Considering all the wedding references in the promo, that could mean marriage, unless of course, that explosion interrupts them. Another couple whose union will be celebrated this year is that of newlyweds Maggie and Winston, who will be very much in love when they return from their honeymoon.

Things might not be as rosy for Linc and Amelia, however, considering she turned down his marriage proposal at the end of last season. All is not lost though, as Marinis explained to TVLine, Theyre going to have to figure it out because they still very much have love for each other. But hes also very, very hurt. Perhaps, counseling will be exactly what they need.

And then theres Meredith and Cormac. When asked by TVLine where things stand between the docs, actor Richard Flood said, I suppose at the start of this season, there will be references to stuff that has happened off-camera, then youll see where it goes from there.

Continuing his vague tease about whats ahead for the potential couple, Flood described his reserved characters feelings for Meredith by saying, I think his feelings are evident for everybody to see I think its clear even in what he doesnt say more than what he does say how he feels.

As for the season as a whole, he teased, Storywise, this feels like its more back to normal in terms of the Greys universe all of the ups and downs, romances and friendships, and then the drama within the hospital and everything to do with the medical cases we have to deal with.

As for cast changes Spencers Megan and Burtons Ellis wont be the only familiar faces returning for season 18.Kate Walsh is reprising her role of Addison, who hasnt been seen on Greys Anatomy since 2007. Of course, she left for the spinoff Private Practice, where she continued to, ahem, play doctor. While it remains to be seen what kind of relationship Dereks first wife has with his widow now, as first reported by Deadline, Meredith will meet a new character named David (played by Zoeys Extraordinary Playlists Peter Gallagher), who had ties to her mother. (Could Mer have yet another surprise sibling out there?)

As for the major return teased in the premiere promo, theres speculation that it could be Martin Hendersons Nathan, who was last seen in 2017 moving to Los Angeles with a resurrected Megan and her adopted son, Farouk. As TVLine pointed out, Riggs was left out of ABCs new character description for Megan, which has her living on the West Coast with only her little boy. Could they be bringing Nathan back just to kill him off either in flashbacks or as part of the premieres medical emergency?

While last season briefly welcomed back the late Derek (Patrick Dempsey), George (T.R Knight), Lexie (Chyler Leigh) and Mark (Eric Dane), it also said goodbye to a couple of characters. Those who wont be returning for season 18 include Jesse Williams Jackson, Giacomo Gianniottis DeLuca (RIP) and Greg Germanns Tom. Though showrunner Krista Vernoff told TVLine that we plan to see Koracick again!

Is Grey’s Anatomy new tonight on ABC? Season 17 promo… – CarterMatt

IsGreys Anatomynew tonight on ABC? For those of you interested in getting an answer to that and a further look ahead, weve got that within!

Want some moreGreys Anatomyvideo updates now? Then check out some of the latest on the midseason finale below! Once you do that, subscribeto Matt & Jess on YouTube and view our playlist. Thats our source for all of our coverage.

Lets start things off at the moment by getting down to the cold, hard facts: There is no new episode tonight on the network. If you havent heard, the return of season 17 was pushed back until we get to March 11, and we feel like well have more news to share over the next few weeks on the subject.

So what can you expect to see within a new promo for thats next? We think this is an interesting thing to ponder over right now, given what happened with Meredith at the end of the first part of the season. We saw Ellen Pompeos character end up on a ventilator recently, and that is something that we figure to be a big part of the shows return. Any promo for what lies ahead should very well include some footage of her on the beach, potentially talking with either some current or former series regulars.

Beyond just that, were sure that a promo for what lies ahead will emphasize what is going on now with Teddy and Owen, which makes a certain degree of sense given the tumultuous state of their relationship at the moment. Meanwhile, whats going on with Maggie and Winston next? Theres been a TON of passion there, but we cant just sit back and forget that they really dont know each other all that well. Their relationship is still new and more problems could surface.

The Office and Greys Anatomy Top List of 2020’s Most-Streamed Shows – The New York Times

The Office, Greys Anatomy and Criminal Minds represent three genres that have been mainstays in American entertainment workplace comedies, and medical and crime dramas. They also feature a combined library of 830 episodes, which significantly boosted them in the Nielsen lists, which ranked shows based on total minutes watched. (Greys Anatomy is still running on ABC and is in its 17th season.)

These programs disproportionately benefited from the fact that they just had a lot of real estate, they have a lot of episodes for people to watch, said Brian Fuhrer, a senior vice president at Nielsen. And what they also do is they provide a sense of normalcy. They can go back and find out whats happening to Dwight Schrute.

Among original series, the only non-Netflix show in Nielsens top 10 list was the popular Disney+ Star Wars spinoff, The Mandalorian.

The Netflix documentary Tiger King was the only show in Nielsens original series list to have as few as eight episodes. It premiered on March 20, just as stay-at-home orders were being issued throughout the country, and a week before the third season of Ozark became available on Netflix.

They both hit right in the heart of the pandemic when people were locked at home, with not much to do, Mr. Fuhrer said. They were both viewed extremely heavily.

While broadcast and cable networks rely on Nielsen to inform them of what people are watching, all of the streaming companies have their own internal metrics. None of them have publicly endorsed Nielsens methodologies, nor do they need those figures to determine which shows to promote or cancel.

For more than a year, Netflix has been publicly disclosing worldwide figures for original shows, providing some sense of what people are watching. But its list comes with significant caveats. Netflix counts viewers that watch as little as two minutes of a program, and the service is extremely selective in what shows and movies it discloses figures for. (For instance, Netflix recently said Shonda Rhimess new drama, Bridgerton, was the services fifth most-watched original series, with viewership in the same league as Tiger King and The Queens Gambit.)

The latest season of Grey’s Anatomy is tackling Covid-19 brilliantly – Her.ie

Grey's Anatomy has been praised by fans for the show's take on the Covid-19 pandemic and the related storylines featured in the new season.

It's a difficult subject to touch and because it's something we're all living at the moment, it's hard to know whether people want to see what they are experiencing in real life or simply indulge in escapism.

Grey's Anatomy, however, has found a way to incorporate Covid-19 into the show's storylines perfectly and sensitively.

One fan wrote on the show's Facebook page: Thank you for so beautifully expressing what children of Alzheimers patients endure. Both of my parents have it, my dad passed in April, and my mother was just diagnosed with Covid-19.

Another fan, hospice nurse Alecia Davidson, praised episode five of the current season, commenting: The difficult decision to push for treatment or promote comfort is my daily reality. This episode had me in my feelings the whole time.

Psychiatrist, Jessi Gold, M.D. whose primary patient population includes frontline healthcare workers, thinks the show has a great platform to show viewers both sides of situations, including what the doctors go through as well as the patients.

She said: When you have a platform like that, you can make a difference with how people talk and think about these things. There is something about having your emotions reflected back to you."

It's not just that we want to see something happy, so we feel better. It's also if someone says you have a right to feel this way because that was hard or that is challenging or that this whole experience is truly traumatising.

Grey's Anatomy is currently in its 17th season.
